Dear, you must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly.

You must learn to calm down from whatever is bothering you. Natural concentration is when the mind can hold a thought for a long time, when thoughts are under our own control. Without concentration the mind goes here, there and everywhere, jumping like a monkey from branch to branch, idea to idea. When there is a natural concentration, we can control our mind and there is peace. This one-pointed concentration on a thought, holding it for as long as we like, gradually collects strength in the mind and in the self. A strong mind is a mind that is peaceful, stable, satisfied and can remain in the deeper meaning of a thought. There is no waste caused by over-thinking, or the high speed of thought: These are the two greatest diseases of the mind these days, which is why there is so much stress and mental breakdown. Stress can foil concentration and learning ability. Although concentration is different to memory, they can affect each other. Concentration precedes memory. If you are under stress your concentration will go for a toss, then naturally memory will be totally foiled. So meet with a counselor to take care of the stress and your memory will happily return. You can follow these simple rules in the meantime: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid all junk food.

Hello Mr. Lybrate-user, sit down with your son and talk to him for 15 minutes, every day. Express your opinion about taking substances- what are your thoughts over this habit, not in a dominating way, but in a way how you would plainly express your opinion. When your son is ready to open up to you he will. Thereafter, try to understand what is bothering him. His world view might be different from your's don't counter his points, listen sympathetically. Ensure he does not take any other substances along with this. Adopt a non-judgmental and motivational approach. Don't counter his arguments. His anger will subside slowly, if you don't counter his arguments. Just lend him a patient ear. Motivate him. Remind him of the skills and talents he has. Most importantly give him hope- that things can get better in the future. When he is emotionally stable encourage him to see a counselor. Hope this helps you.

Dear Gatik. Relationship problems arises because there is differences in personality. Both of you are different personalities. Therefore, there should be differences in culture, behavior etc. When you both stay together, all these differences get settled slowly over a period of time. Relationship is about faith, trust and mutual understanding. Not about ego, personality, behavior and sex. Take care.

You are suffering from poor self-confidence and poor self-image. There is abnormal fear and it could do with some contribution from your upbringing. Perhaps you experienced strict parenting; or you were intimidated by dire consequences for failure; perhaps you were brought up believing that you were not as good as others; perhaps you were forced to show undue regard for elders and felt inferior around them, etc. You must immediately seek help from a counselor. In the meantime you must do certain things to build your constitution physically, spiritually, emotionally, and mentally. Mental stability can be achieved by learning a few skills in handling emotions in an appropriate manner. Stress management skills, which have a lot to do with expressing emotions, will need to be a major part of your recovery program. Emotionally you need the help of a counselor and that will help you tremendously to move from anxiety to normal fear. Please persevere and cooperate through all the support you need and you will come through successfully. Develop your body’s health by physical fitness through exercise, good rest (sleep), and a proper diet. Any way what you need to focus on is to do vigorous exercise of the aerobic kind for the heart’s fitness; meditation for the brain’s fitness; sleep for a well rested mind and body; a sound spiritual well being for good confidence and stability; and a diet with lots of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Vigorous exercise, especially of the callisthenic kind, will make your heart, which is a muscle, grow larger; and then your heart will need to beat less often and you will respond to the anxiety with a calmer disposition. If your mind, constitution, and your emotions are in check and fit, you will never be disturbed again. You need to attend personality development courses, personal grooming courses, conversational skills courses, and definitely a good education will empower you to boost self-confidence and by default self-image. Learn never to compare yourself with others: you are unique and there is only one of your kind, ever. If you let that sink in and appreciate who you are truly, you will go places. By the way a little fear during interviews and meetings helps you prepare better but do not let it intimidate you.

Yes there are medications for quitting smoking. But it all needs your strong determination regarding quitting smoking. Firstly there are nicotine lozenges (quitsure, niclonz 2mg/ 4 mg) which should be taken when you wish to smoke. You may contact your local psychiatrist for special medications like varenicline, bupropion etc.

To really understand your problem in its totality, is to go back home to your family of origin to trace some of the genesis of your problems. You may ignore all my assessments for want of complete evidence, and that is okay. I am not the world’s perfect diagnostic man, nor do I boast of knowing it all. So feel free to take what appeals and dump the rest in the garbage can. In my opinion, I think that your problem lies in the fear of rejection. This rejection is usually founded in your family of origin, and is somewhat manifest in some descriptions you have given already. This is not to find fault in your parents: they may have done a lot of things with good intentions but may have inadvertently set up rejection. Even if he rejection were not true, what you perceive is more important than the reality itself. If you go way back, and see if there was any rejection prenatally or postnatally (again all this with intention or without), the child will pick up the sensation or feel like he is not wanted or even rejected. As you can see, I am presuming all this. You will have to give it substance, if you so have the substance. Without reaching to any conclusions, just indulge in this thought to see if there is any semblance of truth to explore it further. Your parents may throw light on this but don’t share too much of what I saying until it has been verified. Also find out, if there was an abortion or miscarriage before or after you were born. Whether you were wanted by both parents at birth. Whether they expected a female child and were disappointed that you were a boy. How long were you breast-fed by mom etc? These will all throw some light on my proposal of rejection, if there is any truth. Then equipped with this data do meet with a counselor and deal with this issue promptly.

Dear Lybrate User, He may need a bit of willpower to stop smoking permanently. He could easily abstain yourself from smoking during the initial 2-3 days. But after few days of abstaining from smoking he will feel a strong craving to smoke a cigarette whenever he faces any tense situation. Here lies his real test. He will need a lot of willpower to resist that craving & face any tense situation without the help of nicotine. However, he can take Homoeopathic Mother Tincture DAPHNE INDICA Q, 30 drops, thrice daily, after meals, in a cup of water. This medicine will help to reduce his craving for nicotine. To minimise the bad-effects of smoking he should take one single bulb garlic everyday at morning before brushing his teeth.

Of course, the bleeding is because of the inhaling. The lining has been sufficiently damaged to cause a rupture in her nasal blood vessel. The pungent smell of whitener can not only erase print on paper, but also memory from the human brain. The toluene and trychloroethane help to intoxicate and apparently the addicts experience a kick for five to eight hours, depending on the intensity and quantity of the inhalation. According to the experts, the hydrocarbons in the deadly solvents can infuse easily with the blood and can affect the central nervous system of a person. Uncharacteristic behaviors such as mood swings and insomnia are some of the reported symptoms of solvent addiction and it may results in kidney, liver and lung damage. And what's more, just like drug addiction, at a point of unavailability of whiteners, the victims will move on to other intoxicant substances like mosquito repellents, thinners, nail polish removers etc. Which are equally, if not more, harmful. She needs to go for counseling and identify why she is resorting to this pleasure inducement and what pain she is covering up. If she is severely into it she may need detoxification and counseling at the same time. Some medication may be administered to ease the initial struggle but she could resolve it soon she resorts to other drugs or drinks to meet her obsessive-compulsive need for gratification.

You can remove stress by adding relaxing activities to your daily routine. Remove some activities which may not be necessary like talking on the phone, and replace them with more important activities. Learn to recognise your limitations and learn to say no when you are not interested or just cant do it. Employ/ ask help from someone who can help you with the daily chores. Organising, planning in advance, time management takes off a lot of stress from daily life. Also don' t forget the pleasure and the benefits of the chores that you are doing. When you realise these, automatically, you will feel lighter about a task which weighs you down. For eg if you don' t like to cook, but you have to do it everyday, then you can tell yourself to see the brighter side of it that it gives nutrition to your family and your kids are healthier because of what you cook for them.

Dear lybrate-user, what your mother experiencing is the condition called dementia, which has symptoms memory lose, dis inhibition, silly behaviours, change in ways of normal behaviour, paranoia etc. It is a progressive illness and there is every probability for the symptoms to get worse. People with dementia develop behavioural and psychological symptoms including restlessness, aggression, delusions, hallucinations, apathy and sleep disturbances. I suggest you to take to a neuro rehabilitation center or an eminent psychiatrist who could provide you with medicines. Anti psychotics, anticonvulsants drugs are used for them which are found to be effective. Your mother needs to be cared with utmost patience and medicines are only a part of it. A geriatric center should be the place where she needs to be consulted at.
