Dear psychologist, partly you are correct. Still I would like to put forward my thoughts. Writing a gratitude journal or stopping the negative thoughts at a stretch is an utopian idea. Let her talk it out. The things seen outside or the verbatim of the client is just an iceberg. There are much more internal issues involved in this, may be. Let her consult a mental health professional who could be relied upon to have a hearty conversation. Her family and herself are clients to it. The more you delve deeper, the more you get to know about it. Best of luck.

Hi, little bit of tension is good for studies but excess of it is not good. Kindly change the method of your learning. Repeat, revise, review. If you get struck in any problem then leave it for time being. Study some other subject and return on that problem later on. Drink water when tensed and also take some deep breaths. This will relax your mind and you will be able to solve the problem.

I am afraid that you may be suffering from the rejection issue wherein you feel unwanted and also abandoned, and suffer separation anxiety. This can complicate your whole life. There must have been some incident in your early childhood that may have provoked this feeling: be it true or not. It is however possible to resolve this by learning to accept yourself and love yourself. The rejection issue will make you feel like you do not belong, although externally there may be all the signs that they do love you. It is your perception based on some incident in childhood that is influencing this feeling. The perception is more important than the actual event. You must do all kinds of loving things for yourself. That includes respecting your life, health and well being. Do not frequent people or places or situations where you are not wanted. You must exercise daily, eat a good diet and sleep well. Your identity is also something to work on. In the meantime, do a personality development course; attend workshops and conferences and talks to further your growth. The more educated you become, the more confidence you will develop. Generally meet more people and gradually learn to dispel all fear around them: they are also sometimes equally afraid of others!

I have a 18 months old boy. He is starting be become adamant and naggy. How to handle?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
If there are no medical reasons for this condition, you can expect this behavior around this age. He is entering what is known as the? terrible twos, which tends to last from 2 years to about 4 years. Till now he has been the center of the world and has just unwillingly realized that you as a mother have your own needs and will sometimes attend to that first before meeting his. This will outrage him and he will throw tantrums and kick, and bite etc. You have to set boundaries to this behavior and inform him that unless he stops, he will not get attention this way. After a few attempts and escalations, he will learn and adapt. You may help him know better ways of expressing his displeasure. This phase is very important for him to learn self control and discipline. He will also learn about prioritizing and suspending his needs until it can be met, reasonably. Whatever you do, reject the behavior but not the person.

The medicine will give you symptomatic relief and the root cause will not get treated. To avoid being very anxious before and during the exams, try the following: 1. Devide the entire syllabus in small parts. Count the number of days you have for studies. Depending on the syllabus and available days, make a time table wherein you will have fixed time for getting up, fixed time for studies, meals, rest and relaxation and fixed time for going to bed. Try to follow this time table. Please note that you must have some time for relaxation - either games, tv or meeting friends etc. 2. Set some goals for yourself e. G. How many marks do you want to score in each subject? - have realistic goal. Try to achieve this goal. 3. Do not compete with others. Try to compete with your own performance every time. 4. If sometimes you cannot achieve your set goals, try to see what went wrong, improve upon that and try harder next time. 5. Just before the exam, sit at one place, close your eyes, take 10 deep breaths slowly and exhale little forcefully. While exhaling, imagine, that your are pushing out all your stress, tension and anxiety. Have faith in yourself. Tell yourself that you have been studying and will try your best in the exams. 6. While answering the question paper, concentrate on your own paper, don't look around. If required take 5 deep breaths and calm your mind. Without thinking about how many marks you will get, try to answer each question to the best of your abilities, within the set time frame. Please remember, that most of the people are anxious before any exam. Some anxiety will be there. But with proper planning before the exam and by following relaxation techniques just before or during the exam you can reduce your anxiety. All the best.

Health Consequences of Smoking 3 Cigarettes A Day

Health Consequences of Smoking 3 Cigarettes A Day

Smoking can cause irreparable damage to your mind and body. Chemicals in the tobacco travel to all parts of the body, leaving no area unaffected. According to available data, smoking causes 30% of all cancer deaths and about 80% deaths from emphysema and bronchitis. In addition to adversely affecting yourself, smoking also has a severe impact on your near and dear ones. According to WHO, about 600,000 people die every year from passive smoking. Out of the deaths that occur due to this, 1/3rd is that of children.

The Indian situation
While 85% of tobacco users worldwide consume it in the form of cigarettes, in India only 13% use it in that form. Additionally, 54% use it in the form of beedis. A study conducted on Indian smokers has revealed that an average of 8.2 cigarettes is smoked by an individual daily.

The study also revealed that the number of cigarettes smoked every year had grown to over 6 trillion. While 1 out of 10 adults dies from tobacco use worldwide, 5% of deaths in women and 20% of deaths in men in India are caused by cigarette and beedi smoking.

What happens when you smoke?
Cigarette smoke is made up of 4000 chemicals that are present either as tiny particles or gases and about 50 are known to lead to cancer, the toxin nicotine being one of them. In addition to nicotine, the chemicals that make up cigarette smoke also include tar and carbon monoxide. Prolonged exposure to these toxins can hamper your body's ability to filter air and clean the lungs. The smoke not only irritates the lungs but also causes excess production of mucus.

It also causes a paralysis of the tiny hair-like structures like cilia that line the airways and are responsible for removing dust and dirt from the organ. Paralysis of these hair-like structures also causes a buildup of mucus and toxic substances, leading to lung congestion. The extra mucus that is produced causes smokers to suffer from the very ubiquitous smoker's cough and chronic bronchitis.

It's also one of the many triggers of asthma, which brings about the narrowing and inflammation of the airways. Long-term exposure to tobacco smoke causes the destruction of the structure of the lung, walls of the airways as well as lung tissue. The result is a condition known as emphysema. Additionally, smoking also leads to cancer of the lung and over 80% lung cancer cases occur due to this habit. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a pulmonologist.

Dear Suvankar. Memory power is determined by heredity aspects, hormonal activities and above all your attitude and how you use your brain. There are no miracle medicines to improve your brain power. The best method is to use your brain as much as possible. Engage in creative activities and mind games. You will see the difference. Take care.

Depression - Know How It Is Killing You!

DNB, DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Depression - Know How It Is Killing You!

We are all emotional beings and often have our good and bad days. However, we are all wired differently, making our minds work in unique ways. Reasons that make a person feel low are different for different people; what may be depressing for one person may not be depressing for the other. The degree of sadness can also vary from person to person.

Depression, with a feeling of complete hopelessness and despair, is a mood disorder that is becoming increasingly common. Women are more likely to be diagnosed with depression than men. Depressed people describe life as impending doom (a feeling that something terrible is about to happen). They are often consumed with the feeling of living in a black hole not knowing what the future holds, and feelings of lifelessness, emptiness, anger, and restlessness.

Some of the telltale signs of depression are listed below:

  1. Feeling of hopelessness and helplessness
  2. Tiredness
  3. Lack of concentration
  4. Easily irritated, bothered, or angered
  5. Inability to control negative thoughts
  6. Losing interest in activities that you once enjoyed
  7. Reckless behaviour, which was not noticed earlier
  8. Change in sleeping and eating patterns
  9. Difficulty in performing tasks that you once accomplished easily
  10. Worsening alcohol and cigarette consumption

Here are some of the reasons why people feel depressed:

  1. Problems in marriage or relationships
  2. Financial issues
  3. Chronic health issues
  4. Alcohol or drug abuse
  5. Unemployment
  6. Recent life events that were stressful
  7. Lack of social support
  8. Loneliness and isolation
  9. Early childhood trauma or abuse
  10. Managing depression

Accepting that you are depressed is a big step, which helps in managing it better.

  1. Speak out: The most important thing is to find a person whom you can confide in. A trained person or a good confidante can help you by just listening to you.In most cases, depression can be managed by seeing a qualified counsellor. Medications may also be useful in some cases.
  2. Sweat it out: While it may sound very tiring, exercising for even 15 minutes can bring relief. The more you exercise, the better you are bound to feel. Exercise also releases mood-enhancing chemicals that beat depression.
  3. Eat right: Foods with omega-3 fatty acids can help improve one’s mood while foods with sugar and refined carbs can have a negative impact on one’s mood. Change your diet to include mood elevating foods. Binging on junk food is common among depressed people, leading to weight gain and other complications.

So, while you may feel like you are in a black hole, there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel.

I have the habit of smoking since from 3years, I want to quit smoking in a couple of weeks. Could you please suggest me any kind of things to do so?

General Physician,
Best age to stop smoking is before 40 ,In fact do not start all Only by using strong will power and avoiding all situations where you feel like smoking, chewing tobacco or drinking or using drugs avoiding friends who smoke and diverting mind by reading or chewing a gum, like NICORETTE and taking a walk when you crave for a smoke can all help. Ways to Remember Anything Research-based strategies to boost your memory and keep it strong 7 Strategies for Remembering 1.Become interested in what you're learning. We're all better remembering what interests us. Few people, for example, have a difficult time remembering the names of people they find attractive. If you're not intrinsically interested in what you're learning or trying to remember, you must find a way to become so. 2.Find a way to leverage your visual memory. You'll be surprised by how much more this will enable you to remember. For example, imagine you're at a party and are introduced to five people in quick succession. How can you quickly memorize their names? Pick out a single defining visual characteristic of each person and connect it to a visual representation of their name, preferably through an action of some kind. Remember: Memory is predominantly visual. 3.Create a mental memory tree. If you're trying to memorize a large number of facts, find a way to relate them in your mind visually with a memory tree. Construct big branches first, then leaves. Branches and leaves should carry labels that are personally meaningful to you in some way, and the organization of the facts ("leaves") should be logical. 4.Associate what you're trying to learn with what you already know. It seems the more mental connections we have to a piece of information, the more successful we'll be in remembering it. This is why using mnemonics. Write out the items to be memorized over and over and over. 5.When reading for retention, summarize each paragraph in the margin. This requires you to think about what you're reading, recycle it, and teach it to yourself again. Even take the concepts you're learning and reason forward with them; apply them to imagined novel situations, which creates more neural connections to reinforce the memory. 6.Do most of your studying in the afternoon. Though you may identify yourself as a "morning person" or "evening person" at least one Study. Suggests your ability to memorize isn't influenced as much by what time of day you perceive yourself to be most alert but by the time of day you actually study—afternoon appearing to be the best. 7.Get adequate sleep to consolidate and retain memories. Not just at night after you've studied but the day, you study as well. Far better to do this than to stay up cramming all night for an exam.
