MD - General Medicine, DM - Endocrinology, MBBS
Endocrinologist,
Hi please tell me what are the thyroid symptoms I & have lot of tense about that.
Symptoms depend on whether it's hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism causes symptoms of tiredness poor appetite cold feeling little weight gain constipation etc and opposite happens in hyperthyroidism. Irregular menstrual bleeding and infertility can occur both in hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

Hi I just got to know that I have thyroid. Cn you please help me to understand what I can eat and what can not.

MS - ENT,MBBS
ENT Specialist, Kolkata
I am outlining  food you should avoid or restrict in Hypothyroidism. It's important  you maintain  your body weight exercise regularly. Weight gain increases thyroid hormone requirements. Avoid cruciferous   group of veggies  like cabbage and broccoli. Avoid soya bean in all forms. No soya, nugget, chunk, tofu or milk. Limit their intake: Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, turnips, and bok choy. Cooking the vegetables can reduce the effect that cruciferous vegetables have on the thyroid gland. Limiting your intake to 5 ounces a day appears to have no adverse effect on thyroid function. Decrease gluten  intake from processed  food. Always try whole grain varieties of cereals which is rich in fibres and help improve  bowels (Take your thyroid replacement  medicine several hours before or several hours after food rich in fibres. Otherwise problem  with absorption  of hormone. 20 to 35 gram of fibres daily from all sources. Avoid excessive fatty (deep fried) and sugary food as hypothyroidism  causes your metabolism  to slow down &weight gain. Avoid highly salted food, chips, pickles, sauces as they Contain  large amount of sodium. Hypothyroidism  puts you at risk of high BP and excess sodium in salt aggravates Coffee  in excess. And coffee with thyroid hormone  replacement  can prevent absorption. Alcohol. It is toxic to thyroid gland and prevents  hormone production and absorption. Hope this helps

Mr Basantsingh, To give any suggestion, I need to know following details : Fasting and PP sugar levels, HbA1c%, weight, height and waist circumference, drugs being taken with dosage, dietary pattern and extent of daily exercise. It is better if you come in a private conversation, where I will be able to give specific suggestions In the mean time avoid sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods and pastries. Consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and permitted fruits (about 100 g a day). Exercise daily for at least 1 hour a day. Take prescribed medication. Refrain from alcohol and smoking.

Is it 0.04 or 0.4? If 0.4, its normal. If 0.04, you might be having hyperthyroidism and in hyperthyroidism liver enzymes tend to go high. Controlling thyroid overactivity will calm the liver too. Please see your GP. Get your cardiac status checked too. Keep an observation of the symptoms that you could be having like yellowish discolouration of the skin mainly the white part of eye. Any distension of abdomen. Too high pulse rate or bp or feeling your own heart beat is not normal. For now, decrease your iodine intake which comes from salt, egg, milk and milk products etc. Eat a lot of cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach etc. Take multivitamin supplements especially vitamin B and D. Also try to take omega 3 fatty acids and minerals like zinc as much as possible. Wish you good health.

I am a Diabetic since 2004 and since last year with insulin being continued of 20 in the Morning and 18 in the night.
Hello, you should be continue with your insulin doses and start these home remedies also :- 1. take Karela jamun ras from SWADESHI Brand. 2. Powdered cinnamon has the ability to lower blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin activity. It contains bioactive components that can help prevent and fight diabetes. 3. Soak two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Drink the water along with the seeds in the morning on an empty stomach. Follow this remedy without fail for a few months to bring down your glucose level. Another option is to eat two tablespoons of powdered fenugreek seeds daily with milk.

My uncle had sugar problem . Sugar level 450 .he's age 51 . How to control sugar .
Mr. Lybrate-user, blood glucose level of 451 mg is too high. It is better to use insulin injections to control that level. Otherwise there can be very severe complications related various organs. Oral drugs may not be benefiting much. Thanks.

Is there any permanent solutions to thyroid problem rather than taking medicine whole life?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Unfortunately for hypothyroidism only treatment is taking thyroxine tablets for life. This is because hypothyroidism is a condition where thyroid gland does not produce adequate amount of the hormone thyroxine. This hormone is required for maintaining normal metabolic activities in our body. Absence creates serious problems.

Shaking that gets worse when you try to maintain one position? a family history of tremor? as many as one in four people develop essential tremor as they age. You are more likely to develop essential tremor if you have a parent or sibling with the condition. Requires detailed questioning so as to ascertain your personality and to treat you symptomatically. Treatment is available, safe and without side effects in biochemic system of medication. Consult me in private.

lybrate-user, Looking at the thyroid report, TSH is low (0.10), so you can reduce the dose by 12.5 mcg per day (to 87.5 mcg). Then check TSH after 6 weeks if it has been able to maintain TSH in desired range (3 to 4 mU/L). Thanks.
