Vein Thrombosis

To prevent deep vein thrombosis, some common preventive measures include the following:

  • Take any prescribed medications as directed. If you're having surgery, such as orthopedic surgery, you'll probably be given blood thinners while you're in the hospital. Your doctor may also prescribe aspirin or other medications that help prevent clots to be taken for a while after surgery.
  • Avoid sitting still. If you've had surgery or have been on bed rest for other reasons, try to get moving as soon as possible. If you're sitting for a while, try not to cross your legs because this can limit blood flow. If you're traveling a long distance by car, stop every hour or so and walk around.

If you're on a plane, try to stand or walk occasionally. If you can't do that, at least try to exercise your lower legs. Try raising and lowering your heels while keeping your toes on the floor, then raising your toes while your heels are on the floor.

  • Make lifestyle changes. Lose weight and quit smoking. Obesity and smoking increase your risk of deep vein thrombosis.
  • Get regular exercise. Exercise lowers your risk of blood clots, which is especially important for people who have to sit a lot or travel frequently.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. She might be having leg pains because of varicose veins only for which a vascular surgeon is the best person to manage because it requires clinical examination and some tests before treatment can be initiated. I will advise you some blood tests which she should get them done empty stomach, cbc, esr, crp, serum electrolytes, serum vitamin d levels and thyroid profile. Once you have the results of these investigations, then you can send me the reports so that I can prescribe accordingly. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

I am 26 years of age male, and I used to masturbate regularly suffering from varicose veins to left leg only since last 5 years, the veins are bulging day by day and using the stockings and couldn't see the any kind of improvement and can you please tell me how can I cure it.

Earlier stages of varicose veins are treated by wearing stockings, sleeping with legs elevated and sclerotherapy (injection of sclerosing agents in the veins ). Advanced stages are treated by destruction of defective valves in the veins or surgical removal of veins. In cases where there are no symptoms except bad cosmetic experience, no treatment is offered. You must get yourself evaluated by getting a Doppler ultrasound of veins done which would reveal the exact status of your veins.

I am a national kabaddi player. I have varicose vein in my left leg. I considered a surgeon in a Govt. Hospital. He told me that I would have to surgery. Now I have a doubt. Can I continue my sports carrier after the surgery? Please give me a correct solution.

PGD Maternal Child Health, MBBS
General Physician, Akola
You should be able to continue your sports activity even after varicose surgery which targets your veins only and as such does not affect your muscular tissue.

Hi lybrate-user. What does you do, are you student or working person? Suggestion will be to consult a vascular surgeon, confirm presence of varicose veins or any other medical issues. Get done venous duplex in standing position. And then take call about line of manegement.
