Causes and Symptoms of Seborrheic Dermatitis

MD, DNB, FIDP, FIL
Dermatologist, Mumbai
Causes and Symptoms of Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis refers to a kind of chronic skin rash affecting the scalp or face of a person. It has symptoms similar to that of eczema. Excess oil and greasiness could lead to this condition. This is a commonly noticed condition among children and adults. Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by red patches, persistent dandruff, and flaking skin. This kind of skin disorder needs immediate treatment as neglecting the upsetting signs can turn out to be fatal; you may face a neurological breakdown after suffering for days together.

Take a look at the causes of Seborrheic Dermatitis

  1. This skin disease could develop in response to psoriasis. Inflammatory responses often result in reddish patches on the skin.
  2. Malassezia could cause Seborrheic Dermatitis. Malassezia is a type of yeast present in the oil secretions of a human body.
  3. Such a condition could be worsened by the predominant weather conditions. Extreme winters or early spring can make your skin peel off.

Symptoms a person may face:

  1. The first and foremost symptom is red colored skin. The skin will appear as itchy and tender.
  2. A stinging sensation is experienced in affected areas. The pain could be serious enough to prevent you from working or resting.
  3. The eyelids of a person are at times under threat. This condition is more popularly known as blepharitis. The skin of your eyelids becomes red and crusted.
  4. Dandruff can be found on your beard and moustache and even on your eyebrows.
  5. Oily, flaky skin can be found on the scalp, ears, face, chest, armpits and also on the scrotum.

Skin disorders are taken lightly by most people. Many fail to realize how important skin is to the rest of our biological system. Skin is the primary barrier to all kinds of infections and diseases. A person should be aware of possibilities that can happen to trigger a skin condition like Seborrheic Dermatitis. Poking acne or scratching the skin of one's face, diabetes or obesity, psychological trauma, and weak immunity as noticed among patients of pancreatitis can actually increase your risk of contracting this disorder.

*Try to keep to a regular timing for going to bed*Avoid fried and heavy foods. Eat early and light food at night so that the food is almost digested by the time you go to bed. *Prefer fruits and green vegetables. *Fix daily work schedule and be busy with your work. Don’t keep pending problems in mind. Note down the points and leave them for next day’s action. *Don’t do stimulating mental work or keep watching TV which can keep your mind agitated or active. This will not allow you to sleep. LCD screen will also have adverse effect. *Day’s physical exercise makes you tired and induces sleep. *A warm bath in the evening will also be helpful. *Low volume music also induces sleep. *Keep your bed room neat, dark and cool. You may cover your eyes with bed sheet. *Drink plenty of water during the day rather than toward bedtime. *Don’t have stimulating drinks like tea or coffee Drinking a glass of milk before going to bed is fine. The problem can be treated by homeopathy and without adverse effects. Take homoeopathic medicine Nux vomica 200 twice daily in the morning and evening. You may opt for private consultation. Local application of coconut oil or mustard oil or some soothing and calming lotion may provide relief in itching. Neem is one among the best blood purifier and detoxifier known to ayurveda. It enhances immune system and neem oil is an antiseptic in itself. Leaf extracts are used in antiseptics and can be effectively used in treating skin diseases. It destroys fungus and bacteria and is best for almost all kinds of skin diseases including redness of skin and itching.

you are suffering from worry, tension and anxiety. It is often accompanied by muscular tension,[3] restlessness, fatigue and problems in concentration. Anxiety can be appropriate, but when experienced regularly the individual may suffer from an anxiety disorder Anxiety disorders are partly genetic but may also be due to drug use, including alcohol, caffeine, and benzodiazepines(which are often prescribed to treat anxiety), as well as withdrawal from drugs of abuse. Common treatment options include lifestyle changes, medication, and therapy. Diet: it is always important to watch your diet. You are what you eat. Eat what your body needs, reduce refined foods, processed foods and increase the amount of whole grains and fruits and vegetables. Eating small frequent meals goes a long way. Reduce intake of saturated fats; include more lean meats. Choose grilling and steaming over frying and roasting. Recommended foods - Healthy carbohydrates, Fiber-rich foods, Heart-healthy fish and Good fats. Foods to avoid - Saturated fats, Trans fats, Cholesterol and Sodium Exercise: Every week, make sure about 2 hours is dedicated to physical activity. This could include any exercise of your choice, brisk walking, swimming, cycling, aerobics, hiking, jogging, skipping, gymnastics, or playing games like football or basketball. While in most cases, the person can do these on their own, in some people, supervision may be required. Watch your weight: controlling weight to a desirable level of BMI of 18 and 23 is very important. Obesity is one of the predisposing factors for diabetes heart diseases, and reducing weight controls the onset of diabetes and helps the progression of symptoms in diabetics. Smoking: Another risk factor for diabetes onset, palpitation, sleeplessness.Quitting is the best option. If not feasible, reducing smoking and gradually quitting should be aimed at. Not just diabetes, the effects on overall health will be evident almost immediately after quitting. Stress management: there is no getting away from stress. Everybody has their stresses but the trick is to manage it well. Whether it is music or meditation or medication or counselling, make sure stress levels are managed. This also helps prevent complications like heart disease and stroke and promotes well-being
