8 Reasons Why You Should Eat Tomatoes

M.Sc. in Dietetics and Food Service Management , Post Graduate Diploma In Computer Application, P.G.Diploma in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics , B.Sc.Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics

8 Reasons Why You Should Eat Tomatoes

1. Prevents cancer: as a magnificent source of vitamin c and different cell reinforcements, tomatoes can battle the development of abnormal cells that causes cancer. Lycopene has been connected with prostate tumour prevention. Epidemiologists recommend the consumption of tomato as it helps lower the possibility of prostate cancer. High fibre content of beta-carotene in fruits and vegetables has been proven to bring down the risk of colorectal cancer to a great extent.

2. Blood pressure: low sodium consumption keeps circulatory strain solid. Tomatoes are rich in potassium that helps in the same.

3. Heart's well-being: the fibre, potassium, vitamin c and choline content in tomatoes all bolster the heart's well-being. An expansion in potassium as well as a reduction in sodium is the most essential dietary change that an individual can make to lessen their danger of cardiovascular diseases. Tomatoes additionally contain folic corrosive, which keeps the homocysteine levels under control. It reduces the risk of heart diseases.

4. Diabetes: tomatoes help bring down the blood sugar level in people with type1 diabetes. Whereas, people with type 2 diabetes may have enhanced glucose, lipids and insulin levels. One measure of cherry tomatoes gives around 2 grams of fibre and helps them keep their levels neutralized.

5. Constipation: eating foods that are high in water substance and fibre like tomatoes can help with hydration and advance normal solid discharges. Fibre adds mass to stool and is important for bowel movement.

6. Eye health: tomatoes are a rich sources of lycopene, lutein and beta-carotene, which are intense cancer prevention agents. They have been helpful in protecting the eyes against harm related to the advancement of age-related macular degeneration.

7. Skin: collagen, a fundamental part of the skin, hair, nails and connective tissue, is dependent on vitamin c. An inadequacy of vitamin c leads to certain skin problems. As vitamin c is a capable cancer prevention agent, a low intake can affect the skin and cause harm from uv rays, infections and smoke. This usually results in wrinkles, hanging skin, blemishes and other antagonistic skin diseases.

8. Pregnancy: a good amount of folic acid needs to be present before and during pregnancy to ensure the infants good health inside the mother's womb. This can be found in tomatoes.

I have hair problem so I came to know amla is best for hair so I brought it but how shall I consume that?

I have hair problem so I came to know amla is best for hair so I brought it but how shall I consume that?
Amla, if fresh, may be consumed as kalk (paste), grated and mixed in food items, murabba (jam), pickle etc. May be consumed direct by chewing but you can't do it much. Similarly dried Amla powder may be taken with honey, water, ghee or in food. If you can make Amla powder processed in Amla juice which is called BHAWANA in Ayurveda, it becomes most wonderful rejuvenator. Do 21 BHAWANA. It takes quite a few days to complete it.

Most of the moisturizers that you are using today include the butter milk. The butter milk without any chemicals will be an important remedy for removing dark spots entirely from the skin layer. Even if you have blemishes, the butter milk combined with lemon juice will work in a wonderful way. You need to make a paste with 4 tablespoon of butter milk in a container and two tablespoon of tomato juice in it. Mix it well and apply over your skin where you have dark spots. You need to wash it after 15 minutes time. This can ideally remove dark spots from your face without any side effects.

Milk and other dairy products are rich sources of calcium and vitamin d. Vitamin d helps the body absorb calcium, so it is important that you consume it along with calcium-rich foods. Since hair is made up mostly of protein, it is necessary that protein-rich foods are supplied to the body to keep the hair healthy. Calcium- and protein-rich foods include yogurt, cheese, tofu, eggs and soy milk.

How the Sun Is Destroying Your Skin (and What You Can Do About It)

MD - Dermatology , Venereology & Leprosy, MBBS
Dermatologist, Ahmedabad
How the Sun Is Destroying Your Skin (and What You Can Do About It)

Exposure to sun's rays allows the skin to absorb produce vitamin D in the body, however, overexposure to the same can wreak havoc on your skin. So the next time you are going out, consider the effects of sun overexposure on the skin and take precautions accordingly.

Over exposure to the sun's rays can fasten the ageing process in the body. It does this by damaging the fiber in the skin that makes the skin elastic, resulting in sagging skin. It also slows down the healing process of the skin, thus cuts and bruises take longer time to heal.

Following are the various ways in which the sun can cause real damage to your skin:

  1. It may lead to benign tumors on the skin
  2. It may decrease the immunity levels of the skin, thus increasing the risk of various diseases such as basal skin carcinoma (cancer of the cells lining the epidermal layer of the skin) and melanoma.
  3. It may cause wrinkles and fine lines on your skin
  4. It may cause discoloration of the skin, leading to spots on the skin
  5. You may also get affected by freckles on your skin

Over exposure to the sun's rays also increases the risk of skin cancer as it may lead to damage of the DNA present on the skin. This may lead to an unhindered growth of cells, resulting in skin cancer. Apart from this, sun exposure may also increase oiliness in the skin and lead to acne breakouts.

There are a number of measures you may adopt to reduce the harmful effects of sun rays on your skin; they are:

  1. Wear protective clothing when you step out in the sun. Prefer full sleeved clothes and full length trousers or skirts as they will prevent the skin from being overly exposed to the sun.
  2. Wear sunscreen with an SPF count of at least above 15 when you go out in the sun in order to protect the skin from the harmful ultraviolet radiations of the sun.
  3. Remember to moisturize your skin as sun exposure may cause the skin to turn dry and flaky.
  4. Don't save your umbrellas only for rainy days, use them to avoid direct exposure to the sun.

Turmeric is good ingredient for skin. Make a facepack with mixture of turmeric and milk. Apply this and wash off after an hour with cold water for glowing skin. Lemon juice and glycerin work nicely for dry skin whereas fuller’s earth and turmeric are used for oily skin. Do this on a regular basis for at least three months.

Skin pigmentation occurs in many women, it may be because of many reasons like exposure to excessive sunlight, dust, or due to improper sleep, application of various creams etc. If you are thinking that modern medicine has cure to such superficial skin problems, then you are thinking wrong. There is no permanent cure for the pigmentation and strong anti-pigmentation chemical formulae will only work on the surface of the hyper pigmented skin and lighten the effect temporarily. However, if you stop using the drug on your skin, it will revert to its worst condition. In short, modern medicine has no jar of magic towards this common problem that the women face. Ayurveda helps you to gain your proper skin tone in a natural way, ayurveda uses the natural herbs for the same, these are very much beneficial to the skin and body. It helps in proper growth of skin inturn helps in gaining the proper glow of skin.

Hi. Be happy from inside and taking nutritious, healthy food and daily yoga or some kind of exercises, it will be automatically reflected on your face. Yes, the colour which is inherited from your parents/ ancestors, cannot be changed, but you can try to get glow on your face!! Daily Regime: Apart from these, you do follow CTMP, i.e., cleansing, toning, moisturising and protection (apply liberally sunscreen with SPF-30 – a thick layer of Bakson's Suncare cream may be, 20-30 minutes before going out daily and repeat it's application after every 3-4hrs.) after washing your face daily; use the products as per your skin type. This will change the skin texture and skin tone. In case you do have tanning, apply honey with a dash of lime on your face. Eat right and healthy that too on time, relieve your stress/ tensions, sleep well, stop smoking, as this restricts blood flow to your face and leaves you with a greyish complexion. lead a healthy lifestyle! Apart from this, avoid anger, anxiety, fear which increases stress hormone in the body and subsequently makes your complexion darker! (Hormonal imbalances also plays a major role). If the dull and dark skin tone is due to any underlying ailment or diseases, need to look into the matter. Diet: -Increase your Vitamin C intake (lemon,orange,gooseberry,etc.Fruits/juices, strawberries, sweet peppers, tomatoes, cantaloupe, and green peas). - Eat more Vitamin A (nonfat milk, oysters, and egg yolks, carrots, watermelon, papaya, tomatoes, or other dark colored produce) . If you feel your skin is weak or not tight enough, that usually suggests a lack of Vitamin A. Medicine: Use homoeopathic cream - Medicynth's Whitch Hazel or Bakson’s Fairness cream daily at night. Home remedies: Apply fresh-squeezed lemon juice to your entire face and neck. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water. After this, rub cucumber slices on your skin to soften and moisturize it. Do this daily or every other day. Another option is squeeze the juice of one-half lemon and mix one to two tablespoons of raw honey in it. Apply it on your face, leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes and then rinse it off. Make a paste of 'Kasturi Manjal' (wild turmeric) with rose petals, saffron and raw milk which is very effective.
