Doctor my baby would be 15 months old on 16 Jan 2015 and is due for MMR Vaccine but i have heard mixed reviews on the same and parents talking about various side effects where kids stop eating ,feeling feverish etc. Please clarify my doubts.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Faridabad
This vaccine is absolutely safe but some babies may have fever or rash after six days.As it is a live vaccine, the fever or rash may be manifestation of mild disease but it is not at all harmful.

segmented neutrophils are signs of vitamin b12 deficiency..take tablets becasules twice daily for that after meals Fever is not considered medically significant until body temperature is above 100.4 F (38 C). Fever serves as one of the body's natural defenses against bacteria and viruses which cannot live at a higher temperatures..Also, the body's defense mechanisms seem to work more efficiently at a higher temperature -Fevers of 104 F (40 C) or more may be dangerous and demand immediate treatment The following medications may be used at home for mild fever : -Acetaminophen (dolo-650 mg) twice or thrice can be used to lower a fever . Aspirin should not be used in children during a viral illness. -Wear comfortable loose fitting clothes and donot overdress. Overdressing can cause the temperature to rise further. -Tepid water (85 F [30 C]) baths may help bring down a fever -The body should be cooled with a wet sponge. -Fever can cause dehydration.Drink plenty of fluids.Have citrus fruits, particularly Vitamin C rich ones like mausami,Amla juice etc. -Take light and easily digestible home cooked meals .avoid outside food -Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water especially before meals, or after returning from a public places or using public transport. -Further therapy depends on the cause of fever like urinary infection/typhoid or malaria/dengue infection and the accompanying symptoms that need to be investigated and treated accordingly

Answer to your both queries is that wt 8 kg of your baby at this age is normal. U started weaning at right age of 6 months and by now you have rightly started veg soup and khichadi. Have variety of items for change and developing taste, cooked at home, like suji kheer/ halwa, dal, mashed vegetables, fruits etc once or twice in a day with no binding of time any item in morning and other in evening. Continue breast feeding and complementary dairy milk. Any specific food chart is usually not effective since at time baby may not like same food at same time. I always prefer variation of item and time. Appropriate quantity of food is to increase wt. No root vegetable or any other veg causes cold.

Hi, Based upon your complaint, she is suffering from common cold. Give her SYP. SINAREST-AF 2.5 ml three times a day for 3 to 5 days. Maintain good personal hygiene, give her hot water to drink. If she develops cough and difficult in breathing, consult nearby child specialist.

For a newborn, a normal T4 range is 11.8 to 22.6 micrograms per deciliter, and a normal TSH range for a newborn is 1 to 39 microunits per milliliter. Older children should have T4 in the range of 6.4 to 13.3 micrograms per deciliter, and a TSH range of 0.7 to 6.4 microunits per milliliter. You have to repeat test after 2 weeks and if low, he needs to be given medicines.
