Symptoms of Kidney Failure

Fellowship in Andrology, DNB-Urology , MS - General Surgery, MBBS

Symptoms of Kidney Failure

Kidneys are an important part of the human body. From filtering wastes from the blood to maintaining the blood pressure and red blood cell count in the body, the kidney does it all. Both the kidneys are essential organs and should there be any discomfort in the kidneys, one should consult a medical practitioner as soon as possible. Kidney failure is a common problem in people. This issue manifests itself with certain signs and symptoms. One should listen to these symptoms and act quickly before the condition worsens. Here are some of the signs and symptoms of kidney failure.

Interestingly, in the initial stages, kidney failure portrays no symptoms. It starts developing slowly and steadily causing discomfort in other parts of the body and hindering the working of other organs.

  1. Weakness: If you are suffering from kidney failure, you will start feeling weak. Weakness is however not a symptom which can confirm a kidney failure. Weakness is caused due to many other health issues and thus, you need to verify with other symptoms to be sure of the fact that you are suffering from kidney failure only.

  2. Shortness of Breath: You may start experiencing heavy breathing right after doing some rigorous work. In fact, you might feel shortness of breath or be panting for long moments after climbing just a set of stairs. Shortness of breath is quite common indicating that the body is getting tired after doing work. Such indication, more than once a day, calls for an immediate check up of the body.

  3. Lethargy: While most people, especially the young generation to those in the early thirties jokingly declare themselves as lazy people; lethargy, however, is a symptom of many diseases. Various health issues develop if you feel lethargic of working. Apart from kidney failure, diabetes is also manifested in lethargic body movements. At times, just getting out of the bed in the morning seems very tiring and one continues to lie on the bed even after he/she is fully awake.

  4. Stomach Pain: If you experience pain in the stomach, especially in the sides, then it should be immediately checked by a medical practitioner. Doctors say that kidney failure can bring about stomach pains.

  5. Unusual Urine Discharges: This would include clear urine discharges which indicate that the kidney has stopped filtering the waste products.

Thus, these are some of the most important and common symptoms of kidney failure. If you notice any of these, it is advised to visit a doctor for a check up.

Hello sir. Your creatinine is normal. If your BP and sugar is controlled and kidneys are normal in ultrasound then need not worry about protein in urine. It can occur in hypertensive pts.

Kidney Stones: When Should You Get A Surgery?

DNB (Urology), MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Urologist, Delhi
Kidney Stones: When Should You Get A Surgery?

Kidneys stones are a common condition. They are quite different from Gallstones which are formed in the Gall bladder. Gall stones are from bile concentration in the gall bladder. "Silent" Gallstones which are detected on an ultrasound done for another cause, can be left alone.

However, silent kidney stones should never be left alone. These can silently grow to a large size and cause kidney failure without the patient ever experiencing pain. Every patient of stone needs to be evaluated by blood tests, ultrasound and possibly CT-scan. Small stones 5 mm or less may pass out naturally, but should be monitored on Ultrasound to confirm clearance. Larger stones are cleared by a variety of Endoscopic Operations like Ureterorenorenoscopy, PCNL or ESWL. These need 1-2 days hospitalisation and have quick recovery. The stone removed should be analysed for contents so that appropriate preventive measure in diet and medicines can be started as soon as possible.

I would add using a sitz bath with plain hot water 3 to 4 times a day. If you are not cured by 3 weeks and you continue to bleed go in for surgery as it is veryveffecive.

I drink 6-7 litre water per day and I am doing gym and I pass a lot of urine is it good for belly fat loss and is it ...
It is not necessary to drink so much water. You should drink that amount of water so that you pass atleast 2litres of urine daily. So if you drink 3-4litrs per day its enough. And water intake has no effect on belly fat loss.

Men Urinary Incontinence Treatment

Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), MS, MBBS
Urologist, Delhi
Men Urinary Incontinence Treatment

Urinary incontinence is the unintentional passing of urine. It's a common problem thought to affect millions of people. There are several types of urinary incontinence, including:

  1. Stress Incontinence– when urine leaks out at times when your bladder is under pressure; for example, when you cough or laugh.
  2. Urge Incontinence– when urine leaks as you feel a sudden, intense urge to pass urine, or soon afterwards.
  3. Overflow Incontinence (chronic urinary retention)– when you're unable to fully empty your bladder, which causes frequent leaking.
  4. Total Incontinence– when your bladder can't store any urine at all, which causes you to pass urine constantly or have frequent leaking.

It's also possible to have a mixture of both stress and urge urinary incontinence.

What causes urinary incontinence in men?

Urinary incontinence in men results when the brain does not properly signal the bladder, the sphincters do not squeeze strongly enough, or both. The bladder muscle may contract too much or not enough because of a problem with the muscle itself or the nerves controlling the bladder muscle. Damage to the sphincter muscles themselves or the nerves controlling these muscles can result in poor sphincter function. These problems can range from simple to complex.

A man may have factors that increase his chances of developing UI, including

  1. birth defects—problems with development of the urinary tract
  2. a history of prostate cancer—surgery or radiation treatment for prostate cancer can lead to temporary or permanent UI in men

UI is not a disease. Instead, it can be a symptom of certain conditions or the result of particular events during a man’s life. Conditions or events that may increase a man’s chance of developing UI include

  1. benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—a condition in which the prostate is enlarged yet not cancerous. In men with BPH, the enlarged prostate presses against and pinches the urethra. The bladder wall becomes thicker. Eventually, the bladder may weaken and lose the ability to empty, leaving some urine in the bladder. The narrowing of the urethra and incomplete emptying of the bladder can lead to UI.
  2. chronic coughing—long-lasting coughing increases pressure on the bladder and pelvic floor muscles.
  3. neurological problems—men with diseases or conditions that affect the brain and spine may have trouble controlling urination.
  4. physical inactivity—decreased activity can increase a man’s weight and contribute to muscle weakness.
  5. obesity—extra weight can put pressure on the bladder, causing a need to urinate before the bladder is full.
  6. older age—bladder muscles can weaken over time, leading to a decrease in the bladder’s capacity to store urine.

Treating Urinary Incontinence

Initially, your GP may suggest some simple measures to see if they help improve your symptoms. These may include:

  1. lifestyle changes – such as losing weight and cutting down on caffeine and alcohol
  2. pelvic floor exercises – exercising your pelvic floor muscles by squeezing them, taught by a specialist
  3. bladder training – where you learn ways to wait longer between needing to urinate and passing urine, guided by a specialist
  4. You may also benefit from the use of incontinence products, such as absorbent pads and handheld urinals.
  5. Medication may be recommended if you're still unable to manage your symptoms.
  6. Surgery may also be considered. The specific procedures suitable for you will depend on the type of incontinence you have.
  7. Surgical treatments for stress incontinence, such as tape or sling procedures, are used to reduce pressure on the bladder or strengthen the muscles that control urination.
  8. Operations to treat urge incontinence include enlarging the bladder or implanting a device that stimulates the nerve that controls the detrusor muscles.
