Stretch Marks - How PRP Therapy Can Help You?

Stretch Marks - How PRP Therapy Can Help You?

The skin is an elastic organ (yes, it is an organ!), but only to a certain extent. It has a limit to which it can accommodate the underlying tissues. With the increase in bulk, for example, puberty, pregnancy, muscle mass building or surgical implants, the skin is made to stretch beyond its limits. What happens is this stretch causes the skin to stretch too, and these stretch marks or striae become an unpleasant thing that needs to be hidden.

Dressing needs to be changed so that they are not showing. Dermatologists see a big demand for getting rid of these marks too. There have been conventional, time-tested methods which help in getting rid of these. However, with newer advancements in dermatology, the platelet rich plasma is being widely used for getting rid of these stretch marks.

Why stretch marks?

In any of the scenarios above, the stretch marks appear because there is a lack of underlying supportive tissue when it is stretched out. There is a lack of collagen and connective tissue, causing stretch marks. These are most evident in fat collecting areas like breasts, abdomen, thighs, upper arms, etc.

What is platelet-rich plasma or PRP?

The blood is composed of a liquid portion known as plasma, which contains three main types of cells i.e. white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. The white blood cells are the ones responsible for fighting infections. The red cells give blood its color and also are responsible for carrying nutrients to the various organs. The platelets are tiny fragments of cells which help in blood clotting. Platelets are also rich in what are called totipotent cells, which can grow into any type of cells. When the body is affected, due to injury, infection, trauma, etc., these get concentrated in the affected area and are produced in large numbers to help in the recovery of the particular affected area.

Technique:

The area to be treated is isolated and prepared. Blood is centrifuged to remove other cells and obtain platelet rich plasma. This RPR is injected into the underlying layers of the skin. This induces the release of growth factors into the connective tissue space. Collagen is produced over a period of time, which causes the skin to become taut and lose the stretch marks. The injection can be repeated if required on the topmost layer. It can also be mixed with thrombin to form a gel, which is then used similarly. Using it both in the underlying and superficial layers helps in completely getting rid of the marks.

Studies have shown a reduction in both the depth and size of the stretch marks and some might require two to three repeat injections. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

5 Types Of Psoriasis

5 Types Of Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a durable autoimmune disease defined by patches of irregular skin. These patches of skin are usually scaly, red and itchy. Its symptoms vary greatly in severity, the coverage might be small and focused or it could spread all over the body.

Types:
There are mainly five types of psoriasis:

  1. Plaque: also called psoriasis vulgaris, is the most common kind of psoriasis (90% of cases). It affects the skin behind the forearms, over the navel, shins and scalp, usually presenting itself in red patches with white- colored scales over it.
  2. Guttate: has lesions that are drop-shaped.
  3. Inverse: red patches show up in the folds of your skin.
  4. Pustular: pus-filled blisters form. They are non-infectious.
  5. Erythrodermic: the rash spreads wider. In some people, even fingernails and toenails get affected as pits may form on them or their colour may change.

Causes:
Anything from emotional trauma and stress to streptococcal infection can cause psoriasis. Sometimes you might carry predisposition for psoriasis in your genes and stress may aggravate it. Environmental factors may also lead to psoriasis. And then again defects in the immune system may also be the underlying cause. Even after thirty years of research, the exact cause for psoriasis remains a mystery. There is no age limit to psoriasis. It can show up from anywhere between infancy to old age.

Symptoms:
Common symptoms include

  1. Pink or red scaly bumps that are smaller in size, but become plaques later, show up on the skin. Although these scales can show up anywhere, they are mostly common on sites where there is much friction, abrasion or scratching.
  2. Small pinpoint depressions or pits might show up on toenails and fingernails. Distal onycholysis, which refers to large brown/yellow divisions on the nails, shows up as well.
  3. Sore throat may follow if it is guttate psoriasis.

Treatment:
Psoriasis is not curable. But its symptoms can be managed with steroid creams, ultraviolet creams, vitamin D3 creams and with medicines that act as immunosuppressants. Creams alone can help control symptoms in 75% of patients with psoriasis. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Non Surgical Hair Treatments That Can Help!

Non Surgical Hair Treatments That Can Help!

Most of us take our thick hair for granted in our youth and fail to care for them. Not many notice the receding hairline or thinning of hair until it is too late. A hair restoration can bring back the fuller and thicker locks without any invasive surgical treatment. If hair loss bothers you, and you want a treatment that is safer, you can go for nonsurgical treatments.

The great advantage of these procedures is the increase in the density of hair that reverses your age clock back to 10 years. Non - surgical hair restoration treatments are becoming more popular as they are less invasive and safer than the surgical treatments.

There are three common FDA treatments performed for hair restoration: finasteride, minoxidil and low-level laser hair therapy.

  1. Finasteride: This is an oral treatment, and it is available only by prescription. This medicine can be incorporated into your daily routine as supplement. This medication blocks male-type baldness. If taken consistently, this can slowly improve hair thickness and regrowth of hair in the bald area wherever the hair follicles are still active. The overall success rate has been reported as 65 percent. Lesser than 2 percent people experience side effects. The general side effects include erectile dysfunction and low libido. In such cases, the patient will be advised to take half the dosage.
  2. Minoxidil: This is an over-the-counter medication and does not usually requires the prescription. Almost 50 percentage of the users experience regrowth of hair that is shortened due to damage or thicker hair in a few months when applied consistently. This treatment is available in liquid as well as in the form of foam. The liquid form is quite popular as it dries quickly. The patient should apply the liquid on the crown or affected areas once or twice a day.
  3. Laser Therapies:
    • Laser comb: There are many low-intensity laser therapies available that can be done by oneself. The most common being the comb type laser instrument. Most of these work similarly, and they only differ in the number of laser diodes they are built with. The user is directed to use the brush for 15- 20 minutes every day over the affected areas. These instruments cost between Rs. 5000 to Rs.50,000 depending on its effectiveness.
    • Helmet: Many hair loss studios have the laser helmet facility where they have 100 laser diodes built in the instruments. This treatment cost between Rs. 60,000 - Rs. 1,50,000 depending on the effectiveness of the machine. In this, the person is made to sit comfortably for 30minutes to an hour during the treatment. The person can watch TV, read books or rest while the treatment is going on.

How To Care For Your Ageing Skin?

How To Care For Your Ageing Skin?

Staring into the mirror can be listed as one of the most popular pastimes. However, with age, we do not like the image that stares back at us. The black dots, the fine lines, wrinkles begin to deter us from looking into the mirror. So is there a way to take care of your ageing skin.

8 Quick daily habits can help you take care of your ageing skin

  1. Manage sun damage: More than 50% of the skin issues are attributed to unprotected sun exposure. From blemishes to melanomas, they do a lot of damage. While exposure to the sun cannot be completely avoided, protection can definitely be used. Especially when you are going to be out for prolonged periods, ensure using a sunscreen with sufficient SPF. Using full-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and full pants go a long way in avoiding sun damage.
  2. Clearing of the skin: The skin tends to constantly shed off the top layers and get a fresh layer from the underlying layers. This top layer is naturally exfoliated but there are multiple substances which do a better job. Be it almond powder or orange powder, boiled potato peel or walnut powder, the top layers need to be periodically removed to make way for fresh, younger looking skin. A weekly routine of skin exfoliation is advisable.
  3. Moisturize the skin: The skin, especially with age, has a tendency to dry up and this can be avoided with the use of copious amounts of moisturiser. Pick a time of the day where there is a good chance for the cream or lotion to stay on your skin; for many, nights during sleep time works wonders.
  4. Cleaning the skin: A habit of washing the face regularly is very good for skin health. This also clears it of environmental pollutants and so helps in keeping the skin clean.
  5. Night care: Even though you are used to makeup during the day, it would be wonderful if you could leave the skin for a couple of hours with no makeup. The skin breathes free and this helps in the clearing of the pores, which usually leads to acne.
  6. Diet: Include a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain, eggs, and milk products. These will provide the skin with the essential nutrients along with protein and help in skin regeneration. Drink about 2 litres of water to keep a healthy skin tone.
  7. Rest: A well-maintained sleep routine also helps in preventing ageing of the skin.
  8. Exercise: Needless to say, sweat it out. This opens up the skin pores and keeps the skin clear and healthy.

Doing these routinely will help in keeping the skin younger, firmer, and glowing with no wrinkles or fine lines.

Reasons Behind Corns And Calluses

Reasons Behind Corns And Calluses

Corns and calluses refer to the hardening of the skin to form a layer over an area where constant pressure and abrasion is experienced. This thickening of the skin is known as a corn or callus. One will usually experience pain and tenderness in the area where this thickening happens. While corns are thick and tender coatings, a callus is usually the flattened thick area on the skin. As far as shape goes, corns are conical and sharpened while calluses are flat. They are most typically found on the hands and feet. There are various ways of treating this condition. Let us find out more.

What causes corns and calluses?
To understand how to treat these corns and calluses, it is important to first of all understand what causes the same. These corns and calluses are usually formed as a natural defence as the body tries to strengthen the skin when it meets too much friction or pressure. This condition may occur when the toes are pressed together constantly with an abnormal elevation. This can also happen when there is prolonged use of high heels as well as sports training footwear. Bone deformities in the toes and fingers can also be one of the causes of this condition. In many cases, the gait and movement of the patient can cause corns and calluses. Also, when a person plays musical instruments that require constant strumming like a guitar or other instruments, it may result in formation of corns and calluses in the fingers.

  1. Medical Intervention for Complications: If a patient is suffering from conditions like diabetes or peripheral arterial disease, it may lead to poor circulation and delicate skin. This can cause the development and growth of corns and calluses. It is important to see your doctor in such cases so that such symptoms may be treated at the onset before they become too painful and end up spreading.
  2. Medication: A patient will have to ingest salicylic acid based medicines and even resort to the use of sulphur in order to cure these corns and calluses. One must ensure that a skin specialist or dermatologist prescribes the medicines so that one can apply and administer as per the correct dosage.
  3. Home Remedies: Personal hygiene is one of the primary factors that can help in treating and curing this condition. Keeping the affected area clean can increase the chances of the growth to clear up soon. Also, one may have to avoid wearing high heels and constricting footwear for a while until the corns and calluses clear up or fall off. This will also ensure that there is less friction between the feet and the footwear for better recovery chances.
