4 Causes Of Hyper Pigmentation That You Should Be Aware Of!

4 Causes Of Hyper Pigmentation That You Should Be Aware Of!

Every girl dreams of blemish-free skin that glows and can remain youthful forever. However, this remains a dream for many. Most people are unhappy with their skin as they combat various common issues such as dark spots, hyperpigmentation, etc.

The skin has a pigment known as melanin in the underlying layers, which gives our skin its color. Greater the amount of melanin, darker is a person’s complexion. Hyperpigmentation is when there are some areas of the skin that are darker than the other. This is not just an aesthetic issue but also an issue that can affect a person’s morale and self-esteem. Read on to know some of the most common causes of hyperpigmentation and ways to manage them:

  1. Acne scars: While every girl has to go through teenage years with hormone surges and cheeks adorned with pimples, for some, the trauma does not seem to end with teenage. People who suffer from acne even in their 20s and 30s will have acne marks which can be darker than their natural skin tone. Acne scars can be treated by a combination of topical creams, laser, and changes in diet to reduce the further incidence of acne.
  2. Sun exposure: There is no escape from the sun; however, the exposure can be reduced as most skin problems are caused by excessive unprotected exposure to the sun. From sunburn to melasma to melanomas, hyperpigmentation is the first indication of sun damage and can even be cancerous. It is essential to adequately protect from the sun including the use of sunglasses, sunscreen, long sleeves, scarf, and a cap or hat.
  3. Dermatitis: Skin infection, most commonly caused by fungal infections, can also be present as darker areas on the skin that start off as small patches and then increase in size. Some dermatitis conditions are autoimmune but present as dark patches that gradually increase in size and shape and progress to cover various parts of the body.
  4. Skin cancers: Melanomas are more common in white skin and brown and black skin types are relatively protected from this particular type of cancer due to the presence of a pigment called 'melanin' which is responsible for the specific complexion. While acne is treatable, but starting a good skin care regimen early on in life has its benefits. Avoid excessive use of chemicals, eat healthy and fresh, avoid excessive oils and junk food, and see your skin change.

Men - How They Can Make Their Face Look Appealing?

Men - How They Can Make Their Face Look Appealing?

What do men want for the face? Ideally, lesser male population seeks dermatologic services as compared with women. However, according to a recent survey completed by American Society of Aesthetic Plastic surgery, the US population spends over $13.5 billion on cosmetic procedures every year out of which only 9.5 were men. The number has grown manifold in the men partaking in cosmetic procedures by 325% since 1997.

Men are becoming more aware of such services and are ready to spend. The pattern has seen manifold increase. They get feedback from others who availed services. Social media also plays an important role. Men prefer those procedures that have minimal downtime.

Treatment of Double Chin
Most or all men want to get rid of double chin. This could be a problem for even healthy men due to genetic fat pocket under chin. This makes them look being heavier. Treatment for this may help to debulk the fat. The treatment available may induce negligible bruising or pain. The treated area will appear red for few hours with a feel of numbness. There may be sensitivity to touch for few days. In another treatment, injections of specific chemicals by an expert in problem area is used to break down fat in the digestive system. This treatment helps to fix small sized to medium-sized double chin in men. This is also used as a follow up treatment for patients with residual fat.

Temporary solution to reverse aging could be by injecting neurotoxins, instant threads, laser resurfacing, microneedling radiofrequency, and filler. This softens wrinkles heightened with movement. Fillers used are hyaluronic acid and collagen stimulators. These replace the volume loss in those areas and improve a tired look or sagging cheeks or even loss of jawline definition as well as jowls.

Facial Redness in Males
The issue of broken blood vessels, facial redness or rosacea in males cannot have a complete cure via topical treatments. Laser treatments that are available for such issues are highly effective. We have several different lasers to address this and can find the best one for each patient's type of skin. Whether you want the treatment for the entire face or only for any targeted area that is most problematic, it is possible.

With the revolution of perfect looking face, every man can achieve it. The problems of double chin, wrinkles, losing jawline, or even tired look and facial redness are no more considered as a problem forever. Non-invasive treatments at comprehensive medical and aesthetic dermatology practices have made it possible to get rid of them.

Want Younger Looking Face - 5 Treatments That Can Rejuvenate Your Skin!

Want Younger Looking Face - 5 Treatments That Can Rejuvenate Your Skin!

The radiant, glowing skin that stares at us from the billboards and hoardings may be extremely artificial, but it definitely imbibes in us a desire to achieve better skin. This is not restricted to just young girls, but also adults refusing to accept the changes that age brings with it. Many want to look younger far younger than their ages.

While there is no trick that will do the magic, there are definitely some things to follow which can help you achieve a picture perfect skin:

  1. Laser resurfacing: The top layers of the skin need to make way for the fresh layers, which grow from below. This keeps the skin fresh and young in appearance. However, when there is too much of old skin at the top, it ends up appearing dull and lifeless. Laser resurfacing uses a beam of laser where the top layers are removed and the underlying layers are stimulated, so fresh skin is produced. This will need to be repeated at regular intervals.
  2. Chemical peels: Though the concept remains the same as above, chemicals are used to remove the top layers instead of a laser. This could, for instance, include salicylic acid, lactic acid, glycolic acid, etc. The mild acids induce as well as irritate the skin. They are, however, naturally present in the skin and therefore preferred sometimes.
  3. Botox: This prevents aging by relaxing the facial nerve endings. When the brain does not receive a signal from the skin, it continues to remain as is (minus the aging). This is a huge rage and many people swear by this. This is especially useful in women who want to curtail the aging effects including crow’s feet, and fine lines at the nose and forehead. These need to be repeated at regular intervals.
  4. Vampire face lift: The platelet rich plasma, an elixir extracted from your own blood studded with millions of growth factors when injected into your skin, gives younger looking lifted and radiant skin with less wrinkles, dark spots and other signs of aging.
  5. Spider vein treatment: If you have spider veins or small veins on your face that are thought to be unsightly, this could be the answer.

In addition to all the above procedures, the following tips never go out of trend and always provide great results:

  1. Keep the skin clean – never go to sleep with makeup on
  2. Regularly exfoliate the skin
  3. Use sunscreen adequately to minimize damage from the sun.
  4. Adequately moisturize the skin to avoid dryness
  5. Use natural products like turmeric, milk cream, lime, honey, fruit packs
  6. Eat fresh vegetables and fruits
  7. Avoid oily, junk, processed foods
  8. Exercise well
  9. Ensure a good night’s sleep

Why Is It Important To Choose The Right Hair Brush?

Why Is It Important To Choose The Right Hair Brush?

It is natural to get overwhelmed and bewildered while walking down the aisle containing a dizzying variety of hair brushes. Most get confused when it comes to choosing the right one. It is a fact that the right type of hair brush can help a lot in keeping up the natural texture of the hair as well as the look you are willing to achieve.

Here is a brief guide that can help you get hold of the hair brush you had been longing for:

How important is the bristles type of hair brush?

When it comes to the bristles of the hair brush, some are synthetic while some are natural or a combination of both these variants. The natural bristles are acquired from boars, and they can help in the cleaning of the scalp and the hair. They are easy and trouble free on the scalp and cause minimal breakage. Many people are of the opinion that the hair brush with natural bristles lasts longer than the synthetic ones.

If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to natural brushes, then you can go for the synthetic ones made from nylon. These types of hair brushes function by sliding through the fine hair. Hence, people with thick hair should put in considerable research properly before opting for synthetic bristles. Also, you must make sure that the bristles don’t melt under excessive heat.

What are the different types of hair brushes?

There are several types of hair brushes available and here are some of them:

  1. Vent brush: This type of brush is efficient for taming frizziness and detangling your hair. It is absolutely a must-have for short to medium length hair and can also be used as a tool for blow-drying. The vent brushes allow faster drying. They can also add volume to the hair.
  2. Round metal brush: A go-to brush for big bouncy hair, round metal brush, can be your best choice if you are looking to add volume while blow drying. There is an extensive range of shapes and sizes available, and you should choose one as per your needs and brush features. With the advent of newer technologies, you can also get a ceramic and ionic brush.
  3. Paddle brush: This one is also available in various shapes and sizes. You can go for the smaller ones that you may carry on the go while the large ones are best pieces to style at home. They are typically available in square or round shape, and they can smooth and detangle rough, frizzy hair effortlessly. If you have medium length fine hair, they can be a great aid while blow drying.

With this information, it will be easier for you to prioritize your needs and settle for the best hair brush within your budget.

5 Things You Must Take Care Post Hair Transplant!

5 Things You Must Take Care Post Hair Transplant!

Hair transplant is a surgical procedure where hair is surgically implanted on the head. You can opt for this procedure if you suffer from hair loss and bald spots on your head. Hair transplant procedures are preferred when opting for hair-loss solutions as they are not only a permanent solution to hair-loss, but with the advent of modern technology, it also looks very natural.

There are many things, which you must take care of, after the procedure. Here are a few of those things:

  1. Elevation: After the procedure, as mentioned before, there will be some amount of swelling. So, it is important to keep your head in an elevated position so as to ensure that there is no extra swelling in the head. For this, you may have to sleep with your head on two pillows so as to keep the head propped up. Also, you may want to sleep or relax in a reclining chair for a few days until the swelling subsides.
  2. Scars: The procedure will leave you with a few scars as you wait for the hair to grow back from the replaced follicles. There may also be a little bit of swelling or inflammation at the site of the transplant, which may cause irritation. Ask your surgeon for medication which will bring down the swelling. You must make sure that you do not touch or scratch the surface under any circumstances.
  3. Food: In order to help the scar recover faster, you will need to avoid food that is too spicy as this usually has an adverse effect on the incisions and scars after any surgical procedure. These spices usually create a lot of heat and can cause further swelling, redness and other symptoms. Excessive alcohol consumption must also be avoided. There are a number of things that you can take care of after a hair transplant procedure in order to recover faster and be comfortable until the hair growth starts.
  4. Hygiene: The area around the scar and your scalp in general must be kept clean. Use mild shampoos and medication to keep the numbness and irritation at bay so that the scars get enough time to recover.
  5. Physical activity: Sweating will make the scar and swelling even itchier. So, it is imperative that you shy away from physical activities like workouts and running. Also, you may want to stay out of the sun, or even avoid a trip to the sauna for a few days as the exposure may lead to sweating.

Acne Management - Tips That Can Come In Handy!

Acne Management - Tips That Can Come In Handy!

One of the skin’s main functions is protection, and one of the ways it does that is by producing sebum. During teenage and early adolescent years, there is a release of excessive sexual hormones, which also leads to excessive sebum production. This clogs the pores, leading to accumulation of sebum within the skin layers. There are also bacteria trapped within this, leading to infections. Symptoms could include blister formation with pustules, redness, and severe pain. In people with naturally oily skin, this can be a major problem, with large acne which may leave marks when healed.

Causes:
Excessive hormones (androgens).
In girls, correlation with menstrual cycles, pregnancy, and polycystic ovaries,  indicating an association with increased hormone levels.

Management: As it is easy to identify if you are prone to developing acne, steps should be taken to avoid developing acne or reducing its severity once they appear.

  1. Touching acne is a strict no-no. There is a great tendency to keep picking at it, but this should be avoided as the infection can spread to other unaffected areas.
  2. Using a cold towel or soft cotton cloth can help in soothing the area
  3. Ice cubes can also be used on the acne. This will also reduce blood supply and curtail increase in severity
  4. Acne is proven to be an indication of stress, and so stress management is very essential.
  5. Keep calm by various methods – meditation, music, yoga, exercise
  6. A regular exercise routine also is very helpful. The sweating during the exercise helps in clearing up the pores and keeping the skin clean. Sebum is more often cleared out this way, leading to reduced acne
  7. Lifestyle (sleep and diet): A healthy eating pattern with reduced oily foods and sugars and more amounts of fresh foods is highly helpful. A good amount of sleep is also beneficial for overall skin health.
  8. Garments which come in touch with facial skin like pillow covers should be washed with gentle soap
  9. Regular skin care routine should be maintained including frequent washing, regular moisturising, and periodic exfoliating.
  10. Avoid too many chemicals and adhere to a regimen using as many natural substances as possible.
  11. Mild gels or lotions like tretinoin, tazarotene, and adapalene are useful in controlling acne
  12. Topical antibiotics like clindamycin or erythromycin combined with benzoyl peroxide may also be used if more severe
  13. Birth control pills are also used to regulate hormonal levels in some women.
  14. Scars can be treated with laser light therapy, dermabrasion, chemical peels, or steroid injections
  15. Remember that acne is a part of growing up, and will naturally reduce after the growing years.

Onset Of Monsoon - Skin Problems That Are Common During It!

The first drops of rain, the lush greenery, the landscapes all rain drenched - the monsoon makes it truly enchanting, bringing the best out of nature. While most of the people enjoy the monsoon, some people often end up being at the receiving end. The season can be quite punishing triggering a host of digestive and skin problems and infections. In this article, we will discuss some important tips to help keep your skin healthy and problem free during the monsoon.

Common dermatological problems synonymous with the monsoon:
The onset of monsoon may not be at all welcoming for the skin. With an increase in the humidity levels, fungal infections, intertrigo, ringworms, skin rashes, and irritation become inevitable. A study suggests that diabetic patients need to be extra careful as they stand a greater chance of suffering from skin infections and other related problems triggered by the monsoon. Mentioned below are some of the skin problems and infections that are often known to affect people during the monsoons:

  1. Eczema: It is a non-contagious dermatological condition characterized by skin inflammation, redness, and itchiness. The affected area of the skin also appears rough and cracked with the formation of blisters. Monsoon is known to act as a catalyst, aggravating the condition and the associated discomfort to a great extent. People with eczema or sensitive skin should be extra careful during the monsoon.
  2. Scabies: A contagious skin infection caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei (parasitic mites), scabies results in the appearance of a rash along with severe itching (which often worsens at night). The humidity and temperature fluctuations during the monsoons serve as a perfect environment for the mites to thrive. If left untreated, the condition will result in extreme discomfort.
  3. Athlete's foot: A contagious fungal infection that is known to affect the skin mostly around the feet, toenails (the fungus grows on the feet) causing itching and blisters formation. The affected skin and toenails appear rough, cracked, and at times, even discolored.

Effective measures to avoid the skin problems during the monsoon:
The following tips can go a long way to ward off the annoying the skin problems.

  • Practice a good personal hygiene. Keep yourself and your clothes (especially under garments) clean.
  • Keep yourself dry. Avoid staying in wet clothes for too long. Rain or no rain, keep a raincoat or an umbrella with you all the time.
  • As some of the skin problems are contagious, one should avoid sharing their clothes and personal belongings with others.
  • Your diet can also play a pivotal role in minimizing the incidences of skin infections. Avoid hot and spicy food. Instead, opt for more fruits (avoid mangoes, watermelon), vegetables, yogurt, almonds, garlic, brown rice, oats, to name a few.
  • Keep your body well hydrated. Sip water (preferably purified or boiled) at regular intervals.
  • The use of medicated soaps, antifungal and antibacterial creams and powder may be helpful.

5 Reasons Why Antibacterial Hand Wash Is Actually Harmful!

MBBS, MD - Dermatology
Dermatologist, Chandigarh
5 Reasons Why Antibacterial Hand Wash Is Actually Harmful!

Antibacterial, medicated soaps and washes are majorly advertised to be the best for maintaining a healthy, bug-free skin. You might think anti-bacterial washes and soaps kill harmful bacteria and germs lurking on your skin. However, antibacterial hand and body washes containing certain chemicals have recently been banned by the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration). They may be causing more damage to your skin, body and the environment and are no better than ordinary non-medicated soaps and washes.

A few valid reasons why you shouldn't use antibacterial washes:

  1. Antibacterials may lead to the growth of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria: Bacteria cannot be killed by the very low doses of antibacterials present in these so-called antibacterial products. Moreover, these products are typically washed off in less than 30 seconds, not enough time to kill any microbe. Remember, to kill any germ effectively, your physician normally administers antibiotics round the clock for at least 5-7 days! Bugs are smart and with exposure to small doses and short durations, learn and quickly adapt to become resistant to these antibacterials. Later, during actual infections, even high doses of antibiotics are unable to kill these bugs.
  2. Antibacterial washes have the potential to perturb the environment: The common use of these products by millions of individuals causes a huge amount of antibacterial products to flush down the drains. These reach natural waterbodies in lakes, rivers and groundwater. This disrupts not only other natural microbes, algae and fish but many other natural aquatic organisms, resulting in damage to many natural systems.
  3. Antibacterial washes disrupt normal body functions: In animal studies, some of these antibacterial chemicals are found to cause disturbances in hormones, heart muscle, sperm, brain, and bone. Though these changes have not been thoroughly studied in humans yet, they may still result in minute changes which may have a larger impact over time.
  4. Risk of allergy increases: Your skin contains many kinds of good microbes which not only protect your skin from other harmful microbes but are also good for your overall health balance. By altering the normal flora of human skin, antibacterial washes may alter the immunity levels of our bodies. This may result in development of allergies.
  5. Antibacterial Washes are no better than normal, non-medicated, regular washes and soaps: Plain regular soaps and washes are as effective in washing of germs and for maintaining personal cleanliness as any other specially formulated and expensive antibacterial soap or wash. Also keep in mind that products labelled, organic, or 'natural' are not necessarily safe. Simply use ordinary, inexpensive, non-medicated soaps or washes of your own choice.

Moderate Sun Exposure - How Does It Benefit The Skin?

Moderate Sun Exposure - How Does It Benefit The Skin?

Most people facing skin issues, be it dark spots or pigments, blame the sun for their issues. It is true that the sun is one of the most common causes of skin problems from dermatitis to melasma to sunburn to cancer. However, this is due to excessive, unprotected exposure to the sun. What is not known to most people is that the sun can do wonders for your skin when the exposure is moderate.

In fact, it is essential in a way to get a certain amount of exposure to the sun in order to have great skin. Not many know that humans also absorb sunlight and metabolize it to get various benefits.

Read on and understand the contradictions:

  1. Bone health: The most common fact linking the sun and human health is that it is beneficial for bone health. This is because of the vitamin D present in sun rays that is responsible for bone health. Newborn babies are exposed to early morning sunlight so they can develop strong bones.
  2. Sunlight brings on happiness: The happy chemical serotonin is released when a person gets exposed to the sun. It is not without reason that some people wake up to sunrise with a big smile on their faces. It does make them truly happy!! So, go out and get the sunshine on your face. It improves your emotional well-being and even helps control depression. People in countries which do not receive sunlight for weeks or months together experience what is termed as a seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
  3. Psychological disorders: It has been proven that in conditions like Alzheimer’s, depression, and panic disorders, regular, controlled exposure to the sun helps improve symptoms.
  4. Blood pressure control: The nitric oxide produced during sun exposure is known to help reduce blood pressure. This, in turn, helps reduce other conditions like stroke and heart attacks.
  5. Cancer prevention: Better levels of Vitamin D reduce the risk of some cancers; Breast, pancreas, ovarian, and colon for instance. Countries that have very less sunlight have more of these cancers.
  6. Sleep well: Sunlight controls the body’s circadian rhythm and chemically manages this via melatonin. During the day, this is reduced and during the nights, it is increased. This helps maintain a regular sleep pattern.
  7. Immune booster: The white blood cells which are the infection fighters are produced in larger numbers when exposed to the sun. This, in turn, helps fight infections and boosts immunity.
  8. Treats skin disorders: While sun causes some skin problems, it also heals some, like psoriasis, acne, jaundice, and other skin infections. The phototherapy which is used in these conditions is a targeted beam of light which stimulates the deeper skin layers to produce the essential skin cells and heal itself.
  9. Nutrition and sun: The scientists are deciphering that people who place their main meals between sunrise and sunset are the healthiest.
