Sometime I feel pain in my head (back part). It generally happens when I do study. Please suggest what should I do.
Dear lybrate-user, for study or using computer or laptop, we must sit in proper posture, if people sit in wrong posture then they face this problem, whenever we get pain we need to change posture and walk around for few minutes that gives relief.

Is it right to take allopathic and homeopathic treatment simultaneous for schezophernia patient ?

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology
Psychologist, Palakkad
Definitely I don't think there is any use. Homeopathic medicines are of lowest potency and they may not even act on your body if taken along with allopathy medicines. But you can continue taking it if your homeopath suggest to do so. Schizophrenia is better treated with the help of medicines, psychotherapy and meditation. I need to ascertain and diagnose your current mental state. You could post a detailed private question to me to have a proper diagnosis. God bless you.

How to overcome anxiety and depression ?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist,
How to overcome anxiety and depression ?
These problems are connected to anger or sadness and if you do some work with expressing these feelings I am sure you will experience a lot of relief. Anxiety is often seen to go with depression but the underlying cause is anger or sadness and you need to identify whether that is of recent origin or comes from some experience in childhood. In the meantime do the following, sincerely: Have a good night?s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scotching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don?t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love: find someone to love and to love you back. If you love yourself adequately, you will never do harm to yourself. Be positive always and learn to do everything possible to invest into yourself. Life is extremely precious and because the depression, which is a mood disorder, makes you feel like giving up you must still persevere. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive everyday and learn to be contended with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved. Because you are young the prognosis is good subject to your cooperation.

I am suffering from depression and bipolar mood disorder frequently since last 10 years. What is solution?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
I think it is important for you to seek professional help in counseling along with the medication. It is not sufficient to rely on medication alone for your recovery. In counseling, which incidentally will be a long term intervention, you will learn of a lot of ways to cope with life and make adjustments that are essential for normal living. Emotional therapy will alleviate a lot of the problems faced in this condition because it is a mood disorder. You must exercise regularly, eat healthily and sleep normally too. If your motivation and cooperation is good much can be achieved. You must have a time-structured schedule filled with interesting and reasonable activities and it must be monitored for compliance and delivery. In this combination of medication with therapy is maintained for at least three years without any episodes or breakdowns, it is possible to taper the medication in consonance with the doctor.

There are three types of memmory. Sensory memory, short term memory and long term memory. Memory is based on perception and recollection. From the given info, there is nothing to worry about amnesia related problems. Better and effective learning methods improve your memory and recollection. I think two or more counseling sessions should be good for you. Please let me know if you are willing for telephone counseling sessions. Take care.

MD Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
No. It is not okay to smoke even one or two cigarettes a day. You may not be addicted to smoking. It may only be a habit or a pastime for you. Try to break free from this habit soon. Already you have hypertension. Smoking is just going to multiply the health problems.

What are the side effects of antidepressant? what is alternative therapy for anxiety disorder?
Hello sir, which antidepressant are you currently taking? as such every antidepressant will have its own specific side effects but in general antidepressants prescribed for anxiety disorders belong to category of ssri. They all have common side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, worsening anxiety, reduced sleep etc. Which occur only for first 1-2 weeks. After which body starts adapting & these problems disappear. Alternate therapy for anxiety disorder depends on the type of disorder you are suffering. You can get back to me for further help. Good luck.

The caffeine in chocolate, coffee, and tea are actually stimulants to which you can get addicted. If you stop taking caffeine abruptly, you may have symptoms for a day or more, especially if you consume two or more cups of coffee a day. Symptoms of withdrawal from caffeine include: headache, fatigue, anxiety, irritability, depressed mood, and difficulty concentrating. Caffeine does not cause anxiety but the withdrawal can.

Your age may be a huge contributor and if that is true you are looking at a two year period of difficulties only. I suspect that the adolescent issues with regard to hormones may be affecting your ability to concentrate and remember. When the hormones play up, it lasts for a period of close to two years and during that time you could be influenced by three signs directly impacted by the chemical: you will tend to become aggressive and rebellious, you will become sexually active, and you will have acne and pimple problems. The hormonal imbalances may not only impact your memory because of the chemical but also bring some distractions that come with it. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food.

Hello Dr, I am facing a set of problems off late though I am not sure if all of them are related. I am 30 year old software employee, married with a 5 year old kid. Back pain and weakness: Blame it on long distance daily to office or wrong postures while doing various things in a day. But end of the day I face lower back pain. Also, extremely tired at end of the day. Sometimes, I pass urine very frequently during the night. Say like 7-8 times with a gap of 5 mns between each time. Lack of concentration: I am unable to concentrate on any work at hand. Say, when if I start reading a book I immediately get distracted and leave the book in middle. This happens in any work I am doing. My mind is constantly changing gears on something else. This is leading to irritation and frequent mood swings which others around me do not understand. Sexual activity: I should admit, at a point of time I was porn addict. Off late I am not able to perform well during intercourse. The erection doesn't long enough. This is leading to embarrassing situations and also taking a toll on my confidence. God forbid, there has not been an adverse impact on my job/relationships thus far. But I am afraid, I am not feeling as confident as I always used to be. Please advice.

Dear, You must be able to understand Concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Please post a private question to me and I will help you with "effective learning" techniques. Avocados, Beetroots, Blueberries, Broccoli. Celery, Coconut Oil, Dark Chocolate etc are good for improving concentration. Take care.
