Foot exercises. Do the following exercises barefoot: •1. First write digits 1 to 10 using your toes raised up in the air. •2. Sit on a chair, raise your toes and curl them •3. Pick up a small piece of cloth off the floor using your toes. •4. Still in a sitting position, point your toes and circle your ankles in a slow counter and clockwise motion. •5. Aside from seeing your doctor regularly and following your prescribed treatment plan, staying active is probably the best thing you can do for ankylosing spondylitis. Regular exercise can help relieve pain, improve posture, and maintain flexibility. Before beginning an exercise program, speak with your doctor or physical therapist about designing a program that’s right for you. Another important thing you can do for yourself is to practice good posture. A good test for posture is to check yourself in a mirror. First, stand with a full-length mirror to your side and, if possible, turn your head to look at your profile. Next, imagine you have dropped a weighted string from the top of your head to the soles of your feet. Where does the string fall? If your posture is good, it should pass through your earlobe, the front of your shoulder, the center of your hip, behind your kneecap, and in front of your anklebone. If you are not standing that way already, practice holding your body that way in front of a mirror until you know well how it feels. Practicing good posture can help you avoid some of the complications that can occur with ankylosing spondylitis. Best wishes.

I did mri of lumber spine as I was felling bearable pain in my leg that was moving upwards to back, and also I can't bend my body backwards. The MRI report shows li-si disc: diffuse disc bulge with a large posterior central protrusion and annular fissure causing moderate to significant thecal indentation. If you have low back pain and sciatica you can undergo intermittent pelvic traction where in your half of your body weight will be added in the electronic traction so that that would help you to reduce the pain, along with Interferential therapy stimulations which would help you to get relieved from the radiating pain. Apply ice for the pain to get subsided immediately. if you cannot go immediately for the physiotherapy treatment. Ice can be kept in the low back where you have back pain. It is suggestible to wear Lumbo sacral belt which would help you to build the abdominal muscle tone which itself would make you feel better. You can also wear MCR chappals which would help you to have less weight falling in the painful back.

I have pain in my leg. When I rest about 2 -3 hours, I start pain for about 1 hour. Please suggest me.

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hi. Is there any history of injury or hurt to the area? any underlying medical condition? the pain in legs can be because of - muscle cramps (due to tiredness or dehydration), shin splints (doing activity over and over on hard surfaces can bring this on. You may also be more likely to get shin splints if you have flat feet or your feet turn outward. Rest your legs to feel better. Ice helps), tendinitis (you can get it from overworking the calf muscle or climbing the stairs, apply ice to get some relief), sprains (do rest, ice, compression & elevation). Other causes are varicose veins, arterial disease, sciatica, diabetic neuropathy. Medication: meantime, take homoeopathic medicines - arnica 200 and rhus tox. 200 - take both of them thrice daily for 1 week. Also, apply schwabe's topi-arnica and topi mp gel on the affected area in circular motions gently thrice a day. And wrap crepe bandage over it. Get back to me thereafter.

Advice. Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

My son is 8 yrs old suffering from thumb lock. Allopathy doctor suggested as conginental disease and advised for surgery (trigger thumb release). Is there an alternate to surgery?

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am dr akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. I think congenital trigger thumb is best release surgically at the age of 8 years, in younger age you have options like splints, passive stretching, but at 8 yrs, it is best managed surgically. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Thanks & regards Dr akshay kumar saxena Consultant orthopaedics fortis hospital, new delhi
