Hypopituitarism: Early Warning Signs You Need To Know

Hypopituitarism: Early Warning Signs You Need To Know

Hypopituitarism is defined as a condition in which the pituitary gland is unable to produce enough hormones. Under-secretion of pituitary hormones affects reproduction, body growth and blood pressure. It also results in pre-mature aging.

The pituitary gland is a small bean-shaped gland situated at the base of your brain, behind your nose and between your ears. Despite its size, this gland secretes hormones that influence nearly every part of your body.

In hypopituitarism, you have a short supply of one or more of these pituitary hormones. This deficiency can affect any number of your body's routine functions, such as growth, blood pressure and reproduction.

Few Causes:

  1. Head injury

  2. Tuberculosis

  3. Radiation treatment

  4. Stroke

  5. Brain tumors

  6. Brain surgery

  7. Meningitis (brain infection)

  8. Hypophysitis (autoimmune inflammatory disorder)

  9. Sarcoidosis is an infiltrative (accumulation of cells and tissues in excess of the normal amount) disease which occurs in various organs.

  10. Impaired hormone secretion by the pituitary gland is caused by genetic mutations.

  11. Sheehan’s syndrome: It is a condition in which the pituitary gland gets damaged due to severe blood loss during childbirth.

  12. Hypothalamus (a part of the brain which is located above the pituitary gland) diseases wherein the pituitary activities are directly affected by the hypothalamus.

Symptoms:

  1. Fatigue

  2. Reduced sex drive

  3. Decreased appetite

  4. Anemia

  5. Irregular menstruation, pubic hair loss, hot flashes (feverish heat), and inability to breast-feed properly because of low breast milk production).

  6. Dwarfism in children

  7. Weight loss

  8. Increased sensitivity to cold temperature

  9. Infertility

  10. Facial puffiness

  11. Reduction in body hair or facial hair

Treatment Options:

  1. Hormone replacement drugs include:

    • Corticosteroids: Adrenocorticotropic hormone deficiency leads to low production of adrenal hormones (different kinds of hormones such as cortisol and adrenalin, produced in the endocrine glands). These drugs act as a replacement of adrenal hormones.

    • Growth hormone: Growth hormone, also known as somatropin, is injected beneath the skin. This treatment method promotes growth, which balances the height in children. Growth hormone deficiency in adults is also cured by these medications to some extent.

  2. Surgery: Surgical procedure is needed if the condition of hypopituitarism is the result of a tumor. The doctor will remove the tumor through surgery, thus resulting in normal growth.

  3. Radiation: Radiation therapy helps in reducing the size of the tumor which causes stunted growth or pre-mature aging.

Silent Thyroiditis - Signs You Might Be Suffering From It!

Silent Thyroiditis - Signs You Might Be Suffering From It!

The thyroid is a small gland that controls metabolism and growth. Silent thyroiditis is a common autoimmune disorder that affects the thyroid gland. It causes an inflammation of the thyroid gland and is characterized by mild symptoms of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. It is known as Silent thyroiditis because this condition is not painful in any way. Silent thyroiditis is also known as lymphocytic thyroiditis or subacute lymphocytic thyroiditis. The cause of this condition is unknown and hence it is not possible to prevent it. This is one of the least common disorders to affect the thyroid gland. However, middle aged women are at the highest risk of suffering from this condition. Other risk factors include a family history of thyroid disorders, certain autoimmune diseases, removal of the adrenal gland or treatment for cancer.

Some of the symptoms of silent thyroiditis are:

  1. Fatigue
  2. Increased sensitivity to heat and cold
  3. Erratic bowel movements
  4. Irregular menstrual periods
  5. Increased appetite
  6. Palpitations
  7. Irritability and nervousness
  8. Unexplained weight loss
  9. Excessive sweating

If you notice such symptoms, you must consult a doctor. To determine a silent thyroiditis diagnosis, a thorough physical examination and a few tests are required. The physical examination focuses on the size of the thyroid gland, heart rate and presence of tumors if any. A blood test will also be required to check thyroid hormone levels such as T3, T4 and TSH levels. Your doctor may also ask for an ultrasound of the thyroid gland and an imaging test to determine iodine radioactive uptake.

Silent thyroiditis has a good prognosis and patients usually recover within one year. The acute phase typically lasts only three months. Most patients do not require any form of treatment for this condition but regular checkups are advised to keep track of the disease. In rare cases, medical treatment may be required. For example, if the patient complains of increased heart palpitations or excessive sweating, beta blockers may be prescribed to lower the heart rate. The patient is advised to get plenty of rest and avoid any stressful situations.

In some cases, silent thyroiditis may lead to permanent hypothyroidism. In such cases, medication may be prescribed to normalize the thyroid hormone levels. In some cases, thyroid hormone replacement therapy may also be advised. Surgery and radioactive iodine treatment a not required to treat silent thyroiditis. However, even after the symptoms subside, a close follow up is required to check thyroid hormone levels. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Hello Everybody,

I am Dr Puneet Nayak, CMD prettislim a chain of obesity and slimming clinic Mumbai.

Today I will share with you few tips to maintain fitness during the holidays and vacations.

We all work around the year and deserve application during the year to rejuvenate our mind, body and spirit . Use the holidays and vacations as a motivational tool to become fit , smart and healthy.

We all love to share our holiday pics with friends and loved ones on social media - it's up to you to decide how you want to look in those holiday pics. If you want to look fit and smart , you have to use holidays as a motivational tool so that before you start your holidays you should regain your fitness levels to look your best during holiday pics. There is usually a time lag in our plan for holidays as we plan it atleast few months in advance. If you are planning for at least International holiday ,  we do have to use this time to become fit and healthy as the time is usually less and we need to better take professional help . Take a selector sent with approval track record to help you achieve your fitness goals - usually body areas like Tommy and double chain for men and lower body hips and thighs for women need special attention.

If you take enough precautions and a fitness gym before you plan for holidays, you can definitely avoid gaining weight during holidays and look your best during holiday pics. So if you use this strategy , plan your holiday with a fitness regiment. You can even make a better choice if you are under fitness plan .

Apart from pre preparations , what precautions you can take during the holidays ? I would like to share few tips about that also - avoid choosing a meal plan along with your hotel stay as whenever you travel you tend to eat outside the local delicacies . Also along with that , if you have pre booked meal plan ,  you may think you overeat as I already paid for it . Also carry some healthy snacks like protein bars healthy biscuits as reading snacking options.

If you do not have 20 , you may choose locally on healthy available food which may add few more kilos. Whenever you are on a holiday, try to connect with nature like some physical activities such as walking on a beach or trekking on the hills . Connecting with nature also add to your fitness levels. Also most of the resorts and hotels have in house swimming pools, health clubs, gymnasiums. Don't forget to even explode this as a part of your holidays.

If you use these simple tips , I am sure you will not only enjoy your holidays but you can also maintain your fitness levels during the vacations.

Even if you have gained few kgs after your holidays , and once you are back , don't ignore because if you ignore these kgs will pile up and the problem will become much bigger . Most of the people tend to become busy in their work once the holidays are over. Avoid taking any steps for the fitness because of busy schedule as they tend to neglect the fitness.
