How Ayurveda Helps Manage Back Pain?

Back pain refers to a severe pain in the back due to a strain in the muscle and the associated ligaments of the spine. Back pain is a fairly common condition and almost everyone has experienced it at least once in their lifetime. The pain can be either acute (pain in sudden bursts) or chronic (lasting for more than a month). Back pain generally tends to subside if one takes appropriate measures. 

You might experience the following symptoms along with back pain:

  1. Severe pain around the muscles which might stretch down to your feet
  2. Back pain will significantly limit the flexibility of your back
  3. If there are recurrent instances of high fever and severe gall bladder disorders along with the pain, a consultation with your doctor is highly recommended.

Back pain might occur due to the following reasons:

  1. Back pain might occur as a result of osteoarthritis (a disorder that is characterized by the breaking and wearing down of the flexible tissues at the end of the bones) and osteoporosis (a disorder marked by bones that are weak and brittle).
  2. It might occur as a result of a fatal accident or an injury.
  3. If you are a chain smoker and have a history of excessive alcohol or drug abuse, you are more likely to experience back pain.
  4. Back pain might also occur as a result of ageing, excessive weight gain, lack of regular exercising, cancer and instances of severe depression.

Ayurveda can be very useful for eradicating back pain. According to Ayurveda, back pain is caused due to the heightening of the ‘vata’ owing to an unhealthy diet, anxiety, and suppression of muscles, collectively called ‘dosha’. 

The Ayurvedic remedies for back pain are as follows:

  1. A regular intake of 30 ml of Aloe Vera juice in the morning might heal symptoms of back pain
  2. A regular intake of a mixture of 5g Triphala churnam mixed with water before retiring for the night might help to ease the general discomfort associated with back pain.
  3. Consume a medicinal preparation of 100ml of Black Gram (Urad Dal) daily for a week in order to get rid of the pain.
  4. You can also perform Paschimottanasana (an exercise where you have to touch the toes and repeat the same for a few times) and Vayu Mudra (an exercise where you have to move the index finger on the thumb base and the thumb finger in closed proximity to the index finger while the other fingers remain in a perpendicular position) to get rid of the back pain.
  5. Cut down on your consumption of pungent spices. This is because these pungent spices tend to have a drying effect on the body, that in turn, might lead to severe back pain, especially in the lower back along with constipation. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ayurveda.

Besides all these, such people should always avoid sudden change in temperature like if you are sitting in AC, then switch off the AC atleast 15mins. before you move out of the car or the chamber or house.

Try: 1. Regular knee quadriceps exercises (static and knee bending). 2. Ice pack application will help 3.Medications like Cartigen DN, Identical K2 and Enzomac forte will help. Do not depend on pain killers, use ice pack instead to control pain. Intrarticular injections also offer great relief in selected cases.

Be cautious if you are using steroids, pain near elbow while working on triceps may indicate tendon weakness. This may ultimately rupture. Other wise, medications like Enzomac, Tendocare will help. Rule out other conditions like golfer, tennis or student's elbow. Also wear protective paddings while placing elbows over hard surface.

Hello, Thanks for your query on Lybrate "As" per your clinical history is concerned please follow like this - 1) Do a clinical exam by your treating Doctor [Neurologist]and to confirm it do MRI scan. 2) Discuss with your treating Doctor about [Cortisone injections]to reduce inflammations and pain. 3) Apply heat and ice regularly and do physiotherapy for 2 months. Do take few preventive steps like this- 1) Do exercise. Strengthening the trunk muscles helps stabilize and support the spine. 2) Try to maintain good posture. Good posture reduces the pressure on your spine and disks. Keep your back straight and aligned, particularly when sitting for long periods. Lift heavy objects properly, making your legs not your back. 3) Try to maintain a healthy weight. Excess weight puts more pressure on the spine and disks. Hope that helps.

Knee pain As arthritis is very common that you get generally bilaterally. Ice therapy would definitely help to reduce the inflammation. We also advise you to use knee cap which would help to prevent the knee from damaging further and also to maintain the quadriceps muscle tone. You can take Ultrasonic therapy in one of the nearby physiotherapy clinics which would help to heal the damaged cartilages along with shortwave diathermy which would help to improve the blood circulation. It looks like you are anaemic. That's the reason the knee goes for genu recurvatum which is nothing but backward bowing of legs. Check with your haemoglobin levels and also with your calcium & vitamin levels in your body by consulting a general physician. Simple Knee ExerciesSpecific knee exercises will also help ie. Keeping ball underneath the knee and keep pressing it. That's the simple exercise which will help you to strengthen the knee Ice therapy would definitely help to reduce the inflammation. Due to vata dosha effect the pain often reoccurs. Avoid excess walk, heavy weight lift, long standing, cross leg sitting. Moderate oil massage with Balaswagandha lakshadi taila everyday strengthens muscle and relive the pain.

Hello. In ankle sprain the swelling should have progressed gradually. My advice would be to rest and don't exert much weight during the first week and do get a crepe bandage to wrap around your ankle. What this essentially will do is avoid movements at your ankle level giving it time to heal. So second week you can increase the usage of your leg. And third week can even stop using crepe bandage. Sprain generally depending on severity will take 2-4 weeks to heal. And ankle sprain might take longer because of constant use.
