Pain Even After Root Canal - What Should You Do?

Pain Even After Root Canal - What Should You Do?

When a small cavity isn't treated in time, the tooth decays badly that normal filling cannot solve the problem. In such cases, your dentist will probably advise you to undergo a root canal. When performing a root canal, the dentist will remove the nerves and pulp within the tooth, clean the inside of the tooth and seal it. After this procedure, your tooth will not sense anything and should be pain-free.

However, in some cases you may still experience pain after root canal, and there are four main causes of this pain:

  1. Swelling of ligament around the tooth: One of the signs that you need a root canal is swelling of the gums. Even after the nerves and pulp within the tooth are removed, the ligaments around the infected tooth may still be swollen. This can take some time before the tissue is normal again. In most cases, this is the cause for pain after a root canal procedure.
  2. Damaged tissue: Part of the root canal procedure is to clean the insides of the tooth. Here the dentist must be very careful to not go beyond the tooth. In some cases, the file used to clean the tooth may go beyond the root and damage the tissue there. Another possibility is that the sealant used to fill the tooth may go beyond the root, thus aggravating the tissue. This can take some time to heal and may cause pain.
  3. Excess filling: After the tooth has been cleaned, the dentist fills the tooth with a sealant. If excessive sealant is filled in the tooth, it may become taller than the surrounding teeth, which puts extra pressure on the tooth and results in soreness and pain. The dentist will have to remove the excess sealant in order to resolve this issue.
  4. Phantom pain: Phantom pain is rare when it comes to root canal. This occurs when the nerves leading up to the tooth still behaves like they were connected to the tooth despite the nerve within the tooth being completely removed. The peripheral nerves will need to be treated to resolve this issue.

In most cases, these events cannot be prevented. There is also no reason to expect that this is a symptom of your root canal being a failure. Stay in touch with your dentist and brush and floss your teeth regularly. You will soon notice the pain subsiding.

Deep Cleaning Your Teeth, When To Do It?

Deep Cleaning Your Teeth, When To Do It?

If you have neglected your gums, so much, that they are swollen and bleeding, it is possible that tartar and bacteria have succeeded in infiltrating into the gum. The diseased gums, if left untreated, seriously threatens the stability of your teeth and can result in tooth loss. Deep cleaning or gum curettage means the scraping of gum wall to remove inflamed soft tissue (plaque and calculus) that may have collected there.
With a high-precision instrument, we will carefully clean out the gingival groove freeing it from all bacteria.

Advantages of deep cleaning/curettage-

  • Deep cleaning improves the stability of the teeth and the health of the gums.
  • It provides a deeper and more thorough cleaning as it eliminates bacteria from your mouth and infected tissue and promotes healing and reduction in the space between the gum and the tooth.

Dental Bleaching - Is It Really Required?

Dental Bleaching - Is It Really Required?

How do your teeth become stained?

Teeth discolouration is generally caused by stain-causing beverages. These include coffee, red wine, tea and some other hard drinks. Use of tobacco, excessive fluoride and dark-coloured berries may also cause staining of teeth.

Why do you need dental bleaching?

Our tooth is the hardest calcified substance which mechanically helps us to break food particles into minute ones so that they are easily digestible by the body. They aid in our appearance. Hence, having white stain-free teeth is a joy.

The concept of dental bleaching or teeth whitening...

Dental bleaching or teeth whitening is a process of removing the stains from our teeth and to reveal them as milky white. There are 2 types of teeth whitening, whiten and non-whiten. Dental plaque, betel chewing, tobacco tar, drinking dark colour liquids like coffee, tea are some reasons why our teeth get stained. The mineral structure of the tooth becomes phosphate deficient. The enamel layer gradually thins and gets perforated. Hence tooth whitening is required. The dentist removes the eccentric stains as well as intrinsic stains using hydrogen peroxide. Carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide is available as bleaching strips, bleaching pen and as bleaching gel for tooth whitening. Laser tooth whitening technology is also used for this purpose. Increases in the sensitivity of the teeth, irritation in the gums are some of the side effects in teeth whitening process. This procedure of teeth whitening must be essentially done under medical supervision. This is not a one time job and may require more sittings with the doctor depending on the amount of stain in the teeth as well as the whiteners required.

Bleaching or teeth whitening is not recommended for the following people:

  1. Children below the age of 16 should not undergo this procedure.
  2. Individuals with sensitive gums and teeth should consult a dentist prior to using teeth whitening.

Whitening Procedures

  1. Vital Whitening- It is performed on teeth that have live nerves. Here the gel is applied directly on the tooth surface.
  2. Non-Vital Whitening: This procedure is applied if the patient has undergone root canal treatment.

Is dental bleaching a requirement or just a craze?

Dental bleaching should not become a craze/mania because unhealthy obsession for the extremely white teeth will lead to body dysmorphic disorder. This is a mental disorder in which a person cannot stop thinking about one or more perceived defects in his or her appearance.

Teeth whitening should be done only when necessary. People who have unrealistic expectations with:

  1. dental bleaching should not opt for this procedure.
  2. Also, bleaching or teeth whitening is not recommended for the following people:
  3. Children below the age of 16 should not undergo this procedure.
  4. Individuals with sensitive gums and teeth should consult a dentist prior to using teeth whitening.
