I really want to full concentrate on my college studies & right now I cant concentrate more than 1/2 hour. In exam i'm in tension so I cant right my best! give me tips for my next semester! next semester is next diwali, i'm currently taking medicine!

Post Graduate Diploma In Rehabilitation Psychology, M A Clinical Psychology

Hi you are doing good. Human brain can concentrate on one thing only for 40 - 45 minutes and there after concentration degrades. This range differs with individuals, like in your case its 1/2 hr. Quality of time spent in studies is more important than span of time spent. Its good you know your limit, take break every 1/2 hr and make sure you come back to your studies after the planned break. Regarding your tension, (may be anxiousness) we can plan better coping strategies for you in counselling sessions. Also we can discuss smart and sound study methods for effective studies. All the best!

I started smoking in 2010 & i smoke quite a bit much than normal ( means avg. 10 cigarette per day ) so i just want to ask how many months or years it will take to come back to normal life / healthy life as i never smoked if i quit today. Also is there any medication available to quit ? please reply me

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Yes. If u stop cigaratte u will be like before only in few weeks. For that u need to set a quit date. Dont be too much enthusiastic and keep the quit date as per ur convenience. It is not necessary that the quit date should be very close to the day u decide to quit smoking. Lower down ur cigaratte slowly, initially lower down the number per day than when it comes to 2-3 cigarates per day, u can increase the interval period between two cigarattes. Finally u will be able to quit. For craving u need to be highly motivated and still if u feel for cigaratte go for nicotene gums which is awailable in market. Take care

Hi I get hyper on small situations. Is there any way to get my self calm.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist,
Hi I get hyper on small situations. Is there any way to get my self calm.
This tendency to get panicky and worked up for small issues means that there is a fear that has remained unresolved for a long time. This brings about a fearful disposition. You must learn some stress management techniques, some left brain exercises, yoga and meditation, and do regular exercise. But above all you should meet with a counselor and deal with this fear, which may have bearings from childhood or may be genetic too. Spiritual wellness is extremely important to resolve this problem as well.

Dear lybrate user, it appears to me that you did not get enough respect and appreciation from your loved ones while growing up. Presently you are searching for gratification from masturbation. Masturbation is healthy when done to relieve intense sexual urge. But if you are doing this as a habit, then it will be harmful for you. Please contact a counsellor who will help you have higher self esteem and confidence. Once you gain that you will not have social anxiety and depression. You also will be able to better control on your mind. Good luck.

How to cure depression? Is it safe to use medicines to reduce it? Can it be cured.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
How to cure depression? Is it safe to use medicines to reduce it? Can it be cured.
Medicines are safe, before that, The word depressed is a common everyday word. People might say" i'm depressed" when in fact they mean" i'm fed up because i've had a row, or failed an exam, or lost my job" etc. These ups and downs of life are common and normal. Most people recover quite quickly. With true depression, you have a low mood and other symptoms each day for at least two weeks The common symptoms are (few might be present in a person with depression) Feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness or hopelessness Angry outbursts, irritability or frustration, even over small matters Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all normal activities, such as sex, hobbies or sports Sleep disturbances, including insomnia or sleeping too much Tiredness and lack of energy, so even small tasks take extra effort Changes in appetite — often reduced appetite and weight loss, but increased cravings for food and weight gain in some people Anxiety, agitation or restlessness Slowed thinking, speaking or body movements Feelings of worthlessness or guilt, fixating on past failures or blaming yourself for things that aren't your responsibility Trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things Frequent or recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts or suicide Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches consult a psychiatrist and get evaluated.

I want to make my husband more lovable person , he is very busy , angry ,not interested in sex , I want to get feelings in him , and he drink weekly twice , I tried so much to stop but he never cares my words . Can you suggest me any solution to this ? thanks.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Twice drinking a week is not a problem. If you are going after him for that, then you could become a nagging wife. You are only 22 and yet this guy is not interested in sex with you is somewhat worrying. Yo9u must find out if he was forced to marry you or if has lost interest in sex altogether for any reason. It is advisable for both of you to seek a professional's help from a marriage counselor. To get him to be more amenable to you must try the old trick, 'the way to a man's heart is through his stomach'. Cook good food, make a lot of fuss around him, be nice to him and use some seduction to get him interested in sex. You could indulge in some foreplay and get his libido excited. I hope you are also making yourself attractive and desirable to induce some response from him. Love is the key and if both of you shared some chemistry, all this will be history. If he is tired from overwork, find out what he needs to rejuvenate him and organize for the same. Work pressures do take a toll but he can do something about it if he consults a business professional.

How can I reduce or control the addiction of alcohol? Please help me.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist,
If you think that you will find it very difficult, then admit yourself to a hospital and go for de-addiction: which normally lasts for about two weeks. Then follow that up with addiction counseling from a professional for at least three years to completely get rid of the habit. If this is also not enough, then admit yourself into a de-addiction center and stay there for at least 6 months and after that attend counseling with a professional. There are medicines that help with the drinking just to ease the initial craving. Ultimately, it is your will power and the support that you receive from the medical fraternity and your close and dear ones. You must also learn to substitute and deal with the oral need, a rigid value system, the script issue, and of course look at all the genetic factors to plan a strategy not to get into what is called ‘cross addictions’ i.e. another form of addiction that may appear alright but is in fact as bad as the primary addiction. The center or hospital and the counselor will advise and guide you on several measures and precautions you will need to take to stay with your resolve. Even after the rehabilitation you must attend AA meetings and continue this support for a long time. Your family will also need to attend some sessions and go for Al-anon meetings for their co-dependency issues. You cannot be treated in isolation because the family has gotten used to your drinking and have made some unhealthy adaptations to somehow cope. Your children will also have to attend meetings to work out their issues because of the father’s habit. In fact, they are all suffering from the Adult Children Of Alcoholics Syndrome (ACOAs), which in effect means that they are genetically predisposed to alcoholism or can have cross addiction problems and they will have similar traits of the abusing alcoholic but in a milder form. There are special support groups for them all over the world. Should they touch or indulge in alcohol or any addictive substances or behaviors, they could also become full-fledged addicts themselves. Make a serious plan with the wife and children and whoever else’s support you can get and act on it fast.

I am 19 years old I will try to memories my lesson's what ever when I read OK when 30 mint's beck then I didn't memories so what should do.

Do you know what is the stress that is bothering you so much that your memory is affected? If not meet with a counselor and deal with this stress. Here are some things you can do to get back your concentration and memory anyway: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid junk food.

It's very frustrating and confusing when one of the partner appears to be very elusive of an intimate part of the relationship. Lack of intimacy does impact the relationship in many ways. Meet a sexologist and relationship therapist or a psychologist along with your wife to understand what's happening in the relationship and what's stopping your wife from indulging in intimacy. Don't ignore or delay thinking that time will make everything alright. The sooner you resolve this issue, the better it will be. All the best.

Dear, it is good that you wants stop smoking, we are destroying our health by smoking normal human takes oxygen into lungs 12 -15 times per minute (12 - 15 breaths) lungs mixes oxygen in blood and it purifies our blood, by smoking we are mixing not only oxygen adding and mixing bad elements like nicotine etc. In oxygen, that spoils our blood and our body all organs like lungs, heart, kidney etc. In our body. How to quit: by willingness and willpower" where there is a will there is a way" reduce one by one day by day.

I don't know what I am doing I think I am depressed feeling disturbed and depressed. Give me a conclusion.
At your age this claim is serious. If you have depression then there are some major ramifications to take into account. I believe there may be some genetic predisposition or there has been some childhood issue, related to anger, that needs urgent attention. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

It all depends on our motivation and never give up attitude. No you will lose weight needed you change your thinking and attitude towards permanent natural weight loss. The major hurdle is self sympathy while following diet that we r cursing our body, feeling missing out on certain foods, etc. We should just feel that we are gifting ourselves good health and good looks....look at you after that,..a happier you... You should take a metabolism boosting diet....which includes lot of therapeutic foods like wheat grass, lemon grass, ginseng root extracts, cinnamon extracts etc. Take expert advice.
