Do We Really Need Health Supplements?

It is important for you to have a healthy and balanced body in order to perform your daily activities well. People often think health supplements are efficient alternatives to a healthy diet and regular physical exercise while most of the doctors and nutritionists believe that there is no need for any health supplement if you take in right quantity and quality of food and engage in regular exercise. While health supplements are not alternatives to a healthy lifestyle, they are somewhat necessary for everyday health in the hectic lifestyles of today.

Nowadays, stress (learn more about for Controlling Everyday STRESS) is a constant companion and the foods that we consume are often not of proper quality. You may think that you are taking foods full of nutrients but pesticides and chemicals used farming diminish the nutrient content from the crops. This creates a necessity for taking health supplements for the proper nourishment of body.People with certain medical conditions also need supplements. Supplements fill the gap in your diet.

Beneficial health supplements:

Supplements have some side effects depending upon your health condition. If you take some supplements along with some other medicines or before surgeries, they can lead to serious complications. Research has concluded that some vitamin and minerals supplements particularly iron supplements, increase the risk of death. So it is necessary to have a proper examination of the body before you take health supplements. The risk factors include: 

  1. Taking vitamin B6 regularly in excess of 100 mg may lead to damage of your nerves
  2. Taking 400 international units of vitamin E on a regular basis increases the health risk and may even lead to premature death
  3. Taking multivitamins does not supplement poor eating habits.

Head ache can be of many reasons and the commonest is visual refractive error of eyes, Checking eyes and correcting errors can cure headaches, similarly the cause can be migraine and tension. Tension relieving methods and migraine medication can sure these. This includes the blood vessels, muscles and nerves of the head and neck. They may also result from changes in chemical activity in the brain. Primary headaches can occur when pain-sensitive structures in the head do not work properly. Common primary headaches include migraines, cluster headaches and tension headaches. Headache is a broad term that encompasses many different things. Headaches are pains that occur in any region of the head; they can occur on both sides the head or be isolated to a certain location. Headaches can radiate across the head from a central point or have a pincering vise-like quality. They can be sharp, throbbing or dull, appear gradually or suddenly and last for multiple days or less than an hour.4 There are multiple ways to define headaches. The International Headache Society (IHS) categorize headaches as primary headaches or secondary headaches, depending on what has caused them 1) Primary headaches Primary headaches are stand-alone illnesses caused directly by the overactivity of, or problems with, structures in the head that are pain-sensitive. This includes the blood vessels, muscles and nerves of the head and neck. They may also result from changes in chemical activity in the brain. Primary headaches can occur when pain-sensitive structures in the head do not work properly. Common primary headaches include migraines, cluster headaches and tension headaches. Some types of headache can be both primary and secondary as they may be an isolated issue or a result of another condition or illness. Such headaches can involve:  Direct physical stimuli, such as temperature and external pressure  Pain over the scalp (epicranial)  Physical exertion  Other miscellaneous headaches. 2) Secondary headaches Secondary headaches are headaches that are symptoms of another condition that stimulates the pain-sensitive nerves of the head. There are a vast number of different conditions that can cause secondary headaches, ranging in severity from an alcohol-induced hangover to a brain tumor. Secondary headaches can be the result of serious conditions such as stroke, but can equally be a consequence of eating cold food too quickly. In addition to those two examples, the following list should serve to illustrate the variety of different conditions that can cause secondary headaches:  Blood clots  Brain freeze (ice cream headaches)  Carbon monoxide poisoning  Concussion  Dehydration  Glaucoma  Influenza  Overuse of pain medication (rebound headaches)  Panic attacks  Stroke. As headaches can be a symptom of a serious condition, it is important to seek medical advice if headaches become more severe, regular or persistent. For example, if the headache is more painful and disruptive than previous headaches, worsens or fails to improve with medication or is accompanied by other symptoms such as confusion, fever, sensory changes and stiffness, a health care provider should be contacted.

Diabetes mellitus if not managed properly through diet chart, regular exercise & drug/insulin can lead to diabetic foot (fungal infection) & damage other organs as well. Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels with glucometer is essential. Diabetic people are more prone to fungal infections. First consult the doctor whom you have been consulting so fat for managing her diabetes. He should be able to guide you regarding tests to be done. Kindly make sure she follows a correct diet & exercise regimen as well.

Dear Lybrate user, a mouth ulcer usually take 7-10 days to heal completely. Please keep yourself hydrated, drink plenty of water, consume more fluids, have foods rich in vitamin C. You may also take any B-Complex tablets available over the counter. Avoid excessive oily, fried, spicy or hot foods and beverages. You can apply dologel or any other ulcer gel to the affected area 3 times daily. Don't eat, drink or rinse your mouth for 30 minutes after applying the gel. Just leave it for 10 minutes, hold the saliva and afterwards keep spitting out the excess saliva.

The food you take every day has to be absorbed in the system to give you energy to work, for your growth and for building the defence system to fight diseases.
Metabolism is the word used to indicate the chemical changes which take place in the body necessary for fulfilment of its vital functions.
The rate of metabolism is high when you are physically and mentally very active. Normally, your daily activity starts in the morning hours and therefore, don’t miss your breakfast.
Similarly, your rate of metabolism is the lowest in the night when you rest physically and mentally. Accordingly, your night meal has to be light and early so that it is mostly digested before you go to sleep. Avoid late night dinners.
With this kind of balancing, you can be free from OBESITY

I am 72 years old male and I have pain on my heels (people say plasterfastic pain) and now added knee pain. Tried hot water and cold water therapy, not much success. Now applying ayurvedic oils like karpoorathy thailam etc. Doing few floor exercises like folding and releasing, knee lifting and lowering. Can you please suggest any better way of handling this pain.

OK avoid all things do physiotherapy treatment must for u then do calf stretching exercise and put a towel roll under knee and press for 10 second then release repeat 20 time twice a day

Hye, Thanks for the query. There are no benefits of reducing weight below your ideal weight. Chances are you may lose out on immunity and stamina. Gaining weight requires you to eat more calories than you burn. Although fried or sugary foods are calorie dense, eating them exclusively won’t provide enough nutrition to keep you energetic and healthy. Eating several meals and snacks throughout the day and including nutritious, calorie-dense food will help you gain weight healthfully. Weight gain depends primarily on your genetics, age, weight and activity level. To gain weight, you need to eat more calories than you burn. If you’re not used to eating large quantities of food at one time, you may find it difficult to fit all of your calories into three meals per day. Eating nutritious, calorie-dense foods every two to three hours will help you get your calories in without making you overly full and sluggish. If you tend to forget to eat or are always on the go, bring calorie-dense snacks such as eggs, mixed nuts, fruits and dairy. Nutritious, calorie-dense foods provide essential vitamins and minerals, which promote good health and energy. Adding ghee and cream to foods adds additional calories for very little extra physical bulk. Fruit juice, masala milk provides crucial nutrients. Meal-replacement shakes and protein powder sound like good options but also remember that unless your diet is not planned sadly they won't help.

From last 2 days I am suffering from dry mouth and it's I am feeling that it's kind some gum inside my mouth. When I eat food like cooked vegetables I feel soreness. I have tried to seen in mirror if their is any mouth ulcers but didn't find one. And also I am getting thirsty very quickly from last 2 days. It becomes very difficult for me to be like this. Second thing you have mentioned that you have eczema.. then what medicine are you taking as some of the medicine like steroids which are the usual prescription have these kind of effect... So I will advise you to to take proper consultation...especially for homoeopathic medicine... I suspect that the adolescent issues with regard to hormones may be affecting your ability to handle fear, to concentrate and remember. When the hormones play up, it lasts for a period of close to two years and during that time you could be influenced by three signs directly impacted by the chemical: you will tend to become aggressive and rebellious, you will become sexually active, and you will have acne and pimple problems. The hormonal imbalances may not only impact your memory because of the chemical but also bring some distractions that come with it. Issues that crop at this time may be coming up from childhood experiences that were not dealt with adequately. Take your parents along and meet with a counselor to identify these influences and sort them out. This is the last time they will come up looking for a resolution and if not dealt with, you will suffer a permanent negative feature around fear that will get worse over time. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. Eat healthily, sleep well and deal with your emotions. Yoga and meditation will help tremendously. You may also Google EFT (emotional freedom technique), and learn of a very effective tool to sort out your anxiety.
