You need to work with a counselor in tandem with the medications. Also something in your constitution appears not strong enough to cope with the type of harassment you experienced. So it will be wise to work on developing your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual fitness. Mental stability can be achieved by learning a few skills in handling emotions in an appropriate manner. Stress management skills, which have a lot to do with expressing emotions, will need to be a major part of your recovery program. Emotionally you need the help of a counselor and that will help you tremendously to move from stress to normal eustress (good stress). Please persevere and cooperate through all the support you need and you will come through successfully. Develop your body’s health by physical fitness through exercise, good rest (sleep), and a proper diet. What you need to focus on is to do vigorous exercise of the aerobic kind for the heart’s fitness; meditation for the brain’s fitness; sleep for a well rested mind and body; a sound spiritual well being for good confidence and stability; and a diet with lots of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Vigorous exercise, especially of the callisthenic kind, will make your heart, which is a muscle, grow larger; and then your heart will need to beat less often and you will respond to anxiety with a calmer disposition. If your mind, constitution, and your emotions are in check and fit, you will never be disturbed again. The earlier you tackle this, the easier it is going to be. You can take two measures whenever you feel the burnout most: To slow your heart beat breathe deep and slow into your diaphragm, it utilizes an extra 80% of your lungs to absorb more oxygen. The heart beats faster due to more oxygen requirement and slow breathing also reduces stress. The other is to clamp your lips tight with you fingers and puff up your cheeks to increase the back pressure into the back of your throat where the vagus nerve runs, for about ten counts. This nerve is directly connected between the brain and heart and will immediately reduce your heartbeat to a lower level making you calm!

I am an introvert guy. But want to talk to people but i'm not able to do that. How can I become extrovert?

I am an introvert guy. But want to talk to people but i'm not able to do that. How can I become extrovert?
Your intrinsic nature of being an introvert cannot be completely altered and there is no need to do so because being an introvert has several advantages. But, the disadvantages of being an introvert can be modified, thus getting benefits of both worlds. This is generally done by way of intensive psychotherapy. Medicines may help to some extent. If you are really keen on this and willing to put in effort and time, you can get back to me on this. Take care!

Dear user. I can understand. Don't panic. Obsesive compulsive disorder is Excessive thoughts (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviours (compulsions). Obsessive-compulsive disorder is characterised by unreasonable thoughts and fears (obsessions) that lead to compulsive behaviours. OCD often centres on themes such as a fear of germs or the need to arrange objects in a specific manner. Symptoms usually begin gradually and vary throughout life. Treatment includes talk therapy, medication or both. I suggest online psychotherapy. Take care.

Hello Lybrate user, Please contact a professional, (such as a doctor, psychiatrist, psychologist, therapist, counselor, social worker, etc.) if you have been feeling depressed for 2 or more weeks. Therapy/counseling with a psychologist can be very helpful for people suffering from depression. The length (number of weeks) of therapy however, depends on the individuals needs and/or the type insurance coverage a person may or may not have. Medication is also available for people who are" clinically" depressed and can be taken with or without therapy/counseling. Medication indicated for the treatment of depression must be prescribed by psychiatrist. And start following some exercise: 1. Meet with a friend for a walk Socializing can be exhausting even when we’re not depressed. But contact with a friend can be a great source of emotional support and compassion. Meeting a friend for a walk – with or without a dog – can be a great way of combining casual social interaction with moderate physical activity. If your friend doesn’t know you’re depressed, that’s OK. You’re not obligated to tell them. If they do, that’s OK too. Plus, being out walking can take the edge off any feelings of awkwardness or nervous anxiety, whether talking about depression or any other subject. You’re not exclusively focused on the conversation and person you’re with. Quick tip: If in the past you’ve tended to make plans, then felt too depressed to go ahead with them, see if your friend can come to your place to meet you. Unless you’re having a particularly bad day, knowing your friend is outside – and a polite but persistent knock on the door – may give you the extra kick to get you out and about. 2. Do some gardening or cleaning. Interestingly, the longitudinal review of over 26 years of research specifically included gardening as part of the daily moderate physical activity which can have a profound impact on treating and preventing depression. Have a garden? Get out there and plant some seeds, mow the lawn or get some pruning done. You don’t need to blitz the entire front or back yard in one go, but this activity has the added advantage of being able to see the results of your efforts, which can be a great motivator. Live in an apartment? Give it a little bit of a spruce. Clean a cupboard, the fridge or your bedroom. It’s all activity, particularly any scrubbing or washing. 3. Take a pet for a walk. I received so many positive stories from those with depression who were helped by having a furry friend that I wrote an article about it. Dogs in particular have a lot of rather infectious energy and need to walk (or run) it off every day. So why not combine the energy and love of a four-legged companion with the relatively moderate effort involved in walking and take a stroll in the park? Don’t have a dog? Offer to walk a friend or neighbor’s. That way you do your friend a favor and enjoy the benefits of dog-walking as part of your depression treatment strategy without having to worry about the responsibility of looking after the dog when the walk is over. Anything particularly strenuous in any of that? Didn’t think so, but it still counts as moderate physical activity and can help you feel better and beat or prevent depression if done for 30 minutes each day. Now, in my previous article on how to exercise when depressed, I emphasized the importance of whisker goals as a way to build up your level of physical activity by starting off in small, manageable chunks. Even the above suggestions for moderate exercise can be started off in small manageable chunks for just a few minutes each. Don’t try and do too much too quickly, else the anticipation of future exercise which again takes up lots of time and energy may be enough to put you off any more attempts. Interestingly, the study by Andrea Dunn helps here: it showed that three periods of 10 minutes’ exercise per day can have a similar effect to a single 30-minute block. So, when you feel ready, consider two or three whisker goals of 10 minutes’ period of exercise each day.

Hi, I am asking should I drink alcohol? because I am taking it how can I get rid from it.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Alcohol dependence involves intense craving or desire to drink alcohol. People drink for pleasure or rationalize it on external factors like family problems, work tension, etc. They drink continuously, i.e. Almost daily or even weekly once or twice with withdrawal symptoms, tolerance, bodily damage, etc. Due to alcohol they and/ or others are affected significantly. You need to consult a psychiatrist and go for 3 steps of de addiction. 1st is detoxification, when alcohol is stopped and the withdrawal is made smooth with minimal discomfort, 2 nd is maintenance and further deaddiction when the physical problems and psychological state of the individual is maintained and anti-craving drugs started 3 rd rehabilitation, when relapse prevention is the goal, while maintaining deaddiction. All the best.

In my entire life most of the people friends, close associates in the beginning turn out non cordial unhappy leading to broken relationship. Why it so happens? No answer is given to me when I ask them the reason.

M.S. Counselling and Psychotherapy
Psychologist, Bangalore
I can imagine how sad and frustrating it might be for you to see that most of the relationships are falling apart. It is true especially in present times. There are many reasons. But the most important reasons are lack of effective communication skills, lack of assertive behaviour techniques and rigid values, perceptions and expectations of an individual. We all come from different backgrounds and varied socio-economic status. While growing up we learn behaviours from our parents, teachers, and other close family members. Depending on our upbringing, environment at home, and our own life experiences, we develop our own biases, perceptions and values. And we all start believing that our own values and perceptions are" the" truth. Depending on these values and perceptions we have our own set of expectations from different relations. Hence when we have someone coming from a different background and different upbringing, we experience clash of values, perceptions and expectations. Since, each person believes that she/he has" correct" set of values and perceptions, it becomes difficult for them to understand the other person. Unfortunately, in our entire education system, we are never taught" how to listen to the other person" and" how to communicate our own feelings/needs effectively, without hurting the other person. When more people will be equipped with" effective communication skills" and when more people will learn" assertiveness" relationships will improve. Learning both these skills, help a person to be flexible, it gives each person more awareness about their own values/beliefs/perceptions. It also helps in understanding the other person's views and accepting the fact that the person has a right to have different opinion/set of values and expectations. You did not get the answer to your question from your relatives/friends, probably, because, they themselves are not aware about these important skills, and each person is thinking that he/she is right and the other person is wrong and needs to change. In fact, both individuals need to change their own learned styles of communication and expressions, if it is not helping the relationship. And" unlearning" the" learned" behaviour is possible. At your age, I am sure, you have lots of experience and wisdom to help such people who are suffering from dysfunctional relationships. If you are satisfied with my answer, please persuade more people to learn better communication skills and help them in being assertive. It will be a great help for the society as such. Thank you.

Dear user, I can understand. You must understand the difference between alcohol addiction and abuse. You can definitely quit alcohol in one go. Just stop it and swear not to drink again. Engage yourself in games and other engaging activities during evenings or when you feel the urge. Just a week, your habit should change. There are many other methods, which you can see through internet. The best method is what I suggested. Please try it without fail. Take care.

Dear lybrate-user, no one will suggest depression pills just because you ask for it. Those pills are called antidepressants. They are given for clinical depression - not for english word depression. Please come on online consultation with details or visit a psychiatrist. You will be diagnosed first and then treated accordingly.

You have indeed gone through hell already by 23 years. I do not envy your position nor the situation you are in vis-à-vis your extended family not willing to see your problems and not being of support. But you must remember that this is your life. When you think of ending it, it means only one thing that you are treating yourself like the other people: that is you are hurting yourself and wanting to end your life!!! So in essence you are living or not living your life but what other people expect of you, which is to ruin it. You are in charge of your life and what you make of it. You are not accountable to anybody but to god and yourself. Please listen to me: go meet a counselor and talk these matters over. Do not do anything foolish about your life but make a good plan to both work and study. Start in a small way and step by step grow up in life and the society you live in. Do not bother what other people say unless it is true. It is possible to regain all your family lost glory and come back to life with a vengeance. See if you can connect with a relative who has some sympathy or better still if they have empathy towards your cause and together with that support act on your plans. You have to convince them of your determination and genuineness. Do not let ego or pride come in the way of your reaching out to others. Also meet with your doctor because one of the side-effects of your medicine is to have suicidal tendencies. I love that you want others to learn but not through your death. In fact, they will see that it is because of these problems that you took control of your life and made it: that sure will be a good example and role model for others to learn from you. Let me proud of you too, okay? I have helped a person aged 35 years without education, suffering from TB and drug addiction and having a very serious criminal past come out of his mess: he got married to a doctor!, and currently he is the director of an institute!!! I remember that his first investment was something he was very passionate about: a walkman set!!!

Mental Disorder - Early Signs You Might Develop It!

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Mental Disorder - Early Signs You Might Develop It!

The mind or the brain is the master computer, the site of our consciousness, thoughts and memories. We often tend to think of our mind as a separate entity, but the mind and the body are linked and just like our body, the mind too is susceptible to illnesses. The idea of mental illness makes us feel vulnerable and helpless and we dismiss the possibility of mental illness as something that “will not happen to me” or “is in my control”. But like all other illnesses, mental disorders too, are ultimately not in our control. More importantly, they are readily treatable with medications and therapy.

Mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions/disorders that affect our mood, thinking and behavior. They include depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, eating disorders, alcohol/drugs abuse and many others. All of us feel sad, anxious, stressed and have occasional sleepless nights. So when does a mental health concern become a problem? When the signs and symptoms persist and affect our regular day-to-day activities, it’s probably time to seek help.

Awareness is the first step to treatment. Learning about the signs and symptoms will allow you to seek help early and get back to a healthy and happy life.

If several of the following symptoms are recurring, it is advisable to consult a mental health professional.

1. Withdrawal: Recent social withdrawal and lack of interest in others are a common sign that you may have a problem in hand.

2. Drop in functioning: There is a sudden unusual drop in functioning at school, work or other social activities such as withdrawing from sports, failing in school or difficulty in performing ordinary tasks.

3. The problem with thinking: You face complications with concentration, memory or rational thoughts and speech that are hard to explain.

4. Increased sensitivity: There is a heightened sensitivity to sights, sounds, smells or physical contact and a tendency to avoid stimulating situations.

5. Apathy: There is a loss of desire or initiative to participate in any social activity.

6. Feeling disconnected: You experience a vague feeling of detachment from yourself or your surrounding and a sense of unreality encircles you (paranoia or hallucinations).

7. Illogical thinking: You have an exaggerated belief about your personal powers to understand meanings or influence events. You suffer from irrational or magical thinking, typical of childhood in an adult.

8. Nervousness: You have a feeling of fear, you are skeptical of others or have a strong nervous feeling.

9. Sleep or appetite changes: You experience sleep disorders, significant tiredness and appetite changes and even decline in personal care.

10. Mood swings: There are rapid or dramatic shifts in feelings ranging from excessive anger; hostility or violence to suicidal thoughts. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.
