All your suffering, anxiety, dream etc., are nothing but deviations. At the age of 21, if a person's predominant thoughts and activities are directed towards career goals and achievments he will most likely attain a bright future in married life and social life as well. Your fear of becoming a gay is absolutely irrational. Take deep dive into your career goal, all these unnecessary thoughts and fears will automatically vanish.

Anxiety and depression often go together. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - How Exercising Can Help You Overcome?

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - How Exercising Can Help You Overcome?

Being a victim or witnessing a horrific accident or personal assault can leave you shocked and scarred. Sometimes, these conditions last for months and years with memories of the traumatic incident triggering intense emotional and physical responses. This is known as post traumatic stress disorder or PTSD. It is a fairly common anxiety syndrome and can be treated in a number of ways including drugs, exercise and psychotherapy. However, this treatment aims only to control the disorder and there is no known cure for PTSD as yet.

Exercise not only keeps the body fit, but also helps the body release endorphins. Endorphins help fight stress, fear and pain. Thus, exercising helps focus on the body and its movements instead of your fears. It can also help elevate the mood of a person. Low to moderate intensity exercising is ideal for a PTSD patient. Aerobics, pilates, yoga or martial arts like tai chi are known to be effective ways of reducing stress and anxiety in PTSD patients. Breathing exercises like pranayama can also help calm and relax the mind.

Exercise for a PTSD patient should be planned in repetitive sets. This enables the person to slowly master the type of exercise being done and regain control and confidence in himself. It also needs to be predictable so as to avoid triggering a PTSD emotional or physical response. Non competitive exercises are better than competitive exercises as it does not create an opportunity for the person to feel stressed. Exercising and practicing breathing techniques can also help a person analyze himself and his response to stressful situations. By understanding their reactions, a person can slowly bring about changes to handle stress in a better way.

For a PTSD patient, exercise should not be seen as a group activity but as an individual effort to increase self control. Patience is key here both for the patient and the therapist. It is also necessary for the person to have realistic goals from his exercise regimen. An exercise program for PTSD patients also needs to be flexible. In order to meet the needs of a patient, it may need to be changed in accordance to the medication he is under. Small incidents like having a flat tire when cycling can trigger anxiety in a person suffering from PTSD. However, if dealt with correctly, it can bolster confidence in the long run.

Lastly, exercising also helps improve self-image and build confidence which helps a PTSD patient break out of his protective shell and socialize with others. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a psychiatrist.

Dear, You must be able to understand Concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Please post a private question to me and I will help you with "effective learning" techniques. Take care.

How much exercise do people over age 50 really need? How much alcohol can someone over 50 safely drink, and does our tolerance change with aging?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
People over 50 can do considerable exercise and workouts, if they are not suffering from any ailments. In that case they will need to check with their physician to see what is permissible. Even if they are not allowed vigorous exercise, daily brisk walking for at least half an hour is excellent. There is an exercise called High Intensity Interval Exercise, which is for a 20 minute duration only and is excellent for various reasons. One can also follow the XBX Plan which is followed by the Royal Canadian Air force and it is excellent too. You can check for both of these on Google. A man can consume two drinks a day, if he is fit. Yes, as one ages the tolerance will decrease and he will need less to create a buzz.

My boy friend was a chain smoker 9 months before. He was smoking 5 to 6 cigarettes per day for nearly 3 years. Then he gradually decreased the count day by day due to my continuous compulsion. I personally hate smokers to the core. He said to me that he totally stopped smoking for the past 4 months. How to find whether it is true or not? Is there any way to find out that he is lining to me that he stopped it and still doing it when I am not around? Pls help me find it.

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hi, There are few physical sign in smokers who smoke cigarette, try to find out those ones: -One of the most common and immediate symptoms of smoking is the persistent smokers' cough. The cough is usually the worst in the morning and lessens throughout the day. -Teeth of smokers show brownish black staining from inside and yellow discoloration from outside. -While yellowing teeth may take some time to appear, smoking cigarettes can cause yellow stains on the fingers and fingernails almost immediately. -A wheezing sound can indicate several different physical conditions, but one of them is damaged airways/lungs from smoking. -Shortness of breath is a tell-tale sign of a smoker. -Smokers are more prone to getting certain respiratory diseases like colds, bronchitis, and pneumonia. -Lips have a bluish-black discoloration in heavy smokers. -Premature wrinkling: ‘Crows feet’, ‘cobblestone wrinkles’, ‘smoker's face’: Crow's feet is the prominent lines and wrinkles starting from the corner of the eyes. Cobblestone wrinkles are wrinkles that run down at the back of the neck. Smokers also produce matrix metalloproteinase in excess, which degrades collagen and skin loses elasticity as a result. A typical “smoker's face” showing dryness of skin, wrinkles originating from the sides of eyelids running up to cheek called “crow's feet”, wrinkles in front of the ears, and wrinkles running down the neck. -Nodular elastosis of skin with comedone formation. -Multiple open and closed comedones (black heads) over forehead and furrowed wrinkled skin, produced by chronic sun exposure and heavy smoking. Multiple open and closed comedones are present in the periorbital and temporal areas with yellowish discoloration, yellowish nodules, atrophy, wrinkles, and furrows. The eruption is usually bilaterally symmetrical. No inflammation is present, unlike the comedones seen in acne vulgaris. Apart from physical signs and symptoms, the other signs can also help you: -See if their clothes (or hair) smells like smoke. -Look for burn holes in the carpet, in their car, and in their clothing. -If they use mouthwash or gum more frequently.

It depends you have to treat the primary cause. If your stress is primary then may be weight gain, hair fall is the result of that for which you should consult psychiatrist. If there is no weight gain. Hair fall and its the sole reason for stress you should consult endocrinologist. Eat well- lots of nuts and dry fruits, green leafy vegetables and raw fruits. Drink plenty of water. Start exercising daily. All the best. Consult for any query.

I have bad habit of smoking cigarette from two years and it is becoming more and more. How can avoid this bad habit?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
When quitting, you must take one day at a time; though you must give up all smoking at once, and promptly. If you look too far ahead you will get discouraged and will give up. If you sit and count the number of days you have given up, that will also focus too much on achievement. You must focus on the here and now, on that day to be precise. After all quitting is not that easy due to many factors. So even if you fail one day, you must try and try again. Very few people succeed in their first attempt. Your persistence will eventually pay off. The urge to discontinue is hampered by many factors but the worst of them is the conditioning. In fact these conditions can exist all through the day unlike other addictions. But your desire to want to stop is the most important factor. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to have a reason that alarms you about continuing in the habit. The information is really scary but true and you must remind yourself about this every day. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine gums and nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.
