I have smoked for 18 months. N my age is 16 so can I recover my lungs complete as it was previous.

MBBS, MD (AIIMS, Gold Medalist), Diploma in CBT (UWS, Glasgow)

Yes, it is good that you have decided to quit early. 18 months of smoking obviously causes damage depending upon the number of cigarettes smoked per day, but much of the damage can be reversed if you quit now. Best of luck!

How can I avoid thinking about someone who do not loves me back and concentrate on studies?

MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
Hi lybrate-user, Awareness is the first step to overcoming anything. Glad you have already taken the first step. Focus on the present. A common occurrence during overthinking is to place ourselves either in the past or in the future. However, you need to remind yourself that you are living in the present. You cannot change what happened in the past. Likewise, you cannot know what the future holds. The only thing that is left is to live in the moment and make the most of it. Put things in perspective. It is very easy to get lost in the moment and to put importance on useless things. When this happens, ask yourself: Will this matter in 5 years? Will this affect me in the long-term? If the answer to these questions is no, then you need to stop overthinking. You can never escape from your own thoughts and worries, but there are methods of keeping them under control. Make small changes in your thinking pattern and you will see the results. Stop worrying about minor things and focus on the important parts of your life and how you can improve it.

Sir, how to increase memory power naturally. And when I used to study physics and chemistry. I started to get headache. What to do doc!

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology
Psychologist, Palakkad
Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Memory and mind power depends on three aspects. Understanding, retention and recollection. Recollection is easy if your retention is proper and flawless. Retention is possible when you are able understand what you read or learn. To understand you should have concentration. Concentration comes from effective learning techniques based on creative and active learning. Physical exercise, outdoor games, entertainment, socializing coupled with systematic learning improves your memory and mind power. Vegetables, fruits and nuts are perfect for memory. Brain games like sudoku and jigsaw puzzles helps too. Avocados, Beetroots, Blueberries, Broccoli. Celery, Coconut Oil, Dark Chocolate etc are good for improving concentration and memory. I suggest online education counseling. Take care.

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Everyone have fears. Everyone are afraid of one or other aspect in life. Your fear about riding bike came when you fell down twice from bike. That phobia will be vanished the more you try to ride a bike or when the time passes. Don't worry about the phobia much. I suggest online phobia therapy. Take care.

I can't concentrate in any of the work I do. While reading or studying, listening when people talk to me and even while watching a movie, I can't concentrate it completely. What can I do for keeping my concentration level well?

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology
Psychologist, Palakkad
Dear lybrate user, welcome to lybrate. You must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. If the task is boring, it is natural that that person will sleep or feel sleepy. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Please search internet for" effective learning" techniques. Regarding the concentration level while listening to others, or watching movies etc are fake. If the movie is interesting your concentration will never be low. Counseling and psychotherapy will help you. Take care.

Hi, I am female 31 year old and wanting to quit smoking is there any medication which help me stop and hate the smoke taste ? I have Been smoking for about 12 years.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Yes, there is medication to ease quitting smoking. Please consult a doctor for the same. To hate smoking here is a suggestion: keep cigarette butts in an ashtray with a little water and cover it. Whenever you feel like smoking just lift the cover and smell it. The stink is so repulsive that you will not feel like taking a cigarette for some time. When the impulse surfaces again, do the same. You have been smoking for a long time now but you can reverse almost all the damage from it by quitting now. Just keep at it till you succeed. Your willingness and desire to want to stop is a huge plus point in your favor for overcoming this malaise. Quitting smoking is very difficult but not impossible due to the following reasons: smoking has certain conditions for the urge to be stimulated. These can vary throughout the day. You need to de-condition around the habit. There is a physical and psychological craving that has to be countered. There are some medicines that ease the craving, for which you will need to consult a doctor. Some measures you can take are: avoid people, activities, and places where the need to smoke is highest. There is also the time of day when the urge is greater; occupy yourself with planned, alternative, and interesting activities. During all these times do deep breathing exercises. Buy some chewing gum or nicotine gum or nicotine patches to tide over the urge. Replace the conditions or associations with new behaviors to affect the drive. Frequent ?no smoking zones? when in need. Tell the whole world that you have given up smoking, and ask for support from all of them. Your oral need may increase so ?pacify? it by indulging in eating, drinking health beverages, sucking on hard candy etc. Persevere in very difficult moments by sticking to your resolution because the impulse will disappear pretty fast. Get the support of an addiction counselor to process the resolution.

Can Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Be Dealt With?

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Ahmedabad
Can Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Be Dealt With?

Are you suffering from seasonal depression triggered by the change in season? This condition is known as seasonal affective disorder or SAD and primarily occurs during the winter. It usually starts when the days start getting colder and shorter. SAD requires treatment as it limits an affected person’s ability to smoothly carry out his or her everyday activities. Here are the several methods by which SAD can be treated or dealt with:

  1. Light therapy boxes: Light therapy boxes emit light which mimics sunshine in a particular way. This helps in recovery from SAD. The light from these therapy boxes are brighter than normal light bulbs and are of various wavelengths. The patient is required to sit in front of a light box for a period of 30 minutes every day. As a result, the circadian rhythms of the body get stimulated and the natural release of melatonin is suppressed. Light therapy is very effective when undertaken in the morning after waking up. It is a very common treatment used to cure SAD.
  2. Dawn simulators: Dawn simulators help in the management of SAD. These are devices which work as alarm clocks. However, instead of waking you up abruptly by means of a beep or loud music, they produce light which increases in intensity gradually, just like the sun. There are several models of dawn simulators which are available in the market. You should choose a dawn simulator, which uses a full spectrum light. This form depicts natural sunlight. For people with mild SAD, dawn simulators are as effective as light therapy.
  3. Consult a doctor: SAD is a type of depression and it is recommended that you to consult a psychiatrist. Several screening questions are asked to a patient to determine his/her level of depression. A doctor will also observe whether your depression is because of SAD or any other factor.
  4. Antidepressants: In case, psychotherapy or light therapy fails to cure your SAD and the accompanied depression, you should take prescribed antidepressants. These medicines might help in overcoming your seasonal depression. Try to avoid medicines which make you feel sleepy. If you have SAD, you should take antidepressants every winter and not just during the winters when you feel the blues.

It is very important for you to recognise the symptoms of SAD when they start showing, and consult a doctor immediately. This will prevent the symptoms from escalating and you will be able to get early treatment.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Dear sir/madam , I am so addicted to cigarette as my cigarette stick counts from min 10 to 20 or even 30 per day. Smoking is deeply rooted into my behavior. It will be great if you advice the way to leave it in a proper way as sudden leaving makes my life imbalance.

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. Cigarette contains more than 4000+ chemicals which can cause many physical and mental problems. Nicotine is addictive and causes addiction. Smoking can cause cancer and other physical problems. The best method to quit smoking is to use your will power and sustain it with your will power. There are other methods like deaddiction therapy. I suggest online counseling and deaddiction therapy. Take care.

Poison will remain poison whether it is taken in small quantity or big. According to me more than wine, we should focus upon his levels of stress and how to manage it. He can not avoid working hard but to escape from the reality and switching to wine will gradually drag him to addiction. He should better start waking up early for fresh air, do some physical work out and meditate. That will give him more energy to tackle stress. Wine is an escape from the reality. The faster he realizes this, the better it is. Please contact for further guidance.
