•Eat a healthy, balanced diet and avoid eating strongly flavoured or spicy food. •Cut down on sugary food and drink, as it can increase the amount of bacteria in your mouth. •Reduce your alcohol consumption. •Stop smoking. •Cut down on coffee. •Drink plenty of water to help prevent your mouth becoming dry. •Chew sugar-free gum after eating, to stimulate the flow of saliva. This will help clean away any remaining food particles. •Don't use toothpaste to clean your dentures, as it can scratch the surface and cause stains. •Clean your dentures thoroughly using soap and lukewarm water, denture cream or a denture-cleaning tablet. •Use a separate toothbrush to clean your dentures. •Make sure you visit your dentist for regular check-ups. Having regular dental check-ups will ensure that any plaque is removed from your teeth, particularly in areas that are difficult to reach. •Your dentist can recommend the best way to clean your teeth and gums, and point out areas you might be missing. They can also identify any signs of gum disease and ensure early treatment. •Gastritis, lung & sinus infection may also be the cause of bad smell in the mouth. 90% of bad breath is due to a dirty tongue. •If your bad breath is caused by a gastrointestinal problem, such as an H. Pylori infection or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), you may be referred to a gastroenterologist. •Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may be a warning sign of gum (periodontal) disease. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on teeth. •You may need deep cleaning & fill tooth cavities with artificial enamel filling. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash until then. Advance procedures can be done with laser too. You may consult me in person.

Diphtheria - How it Affects Your Throat and Tongue?

General Physician, Pune
Diphtheria - How it Affects Your Throat and Tongue?

A quite serious bacterial infection, diphtheria is caused by the Corynebacterium diphtheria. It usually tends to affect the throat and the mouth of an affected person, although there are other varieties which can infect your skin as well. However, the most common cases of diphtheria affect the throat and the mouth.

Symptoms of diphtheria in general
It may take up to five days for symptoms to show up when you are infected with the disease. Some of the symptoms would be:

  1. You neck would swell up due to swelling in the lymph nodes, especially in the neck
  2. Your throat and tonsils will develop a thick grayish membrane
  3. Your throat may become sore and hoarse
  4. You may face difficulty in breathing, depending on the size of the membrane and the resultant inflammation
  5. You may have difficulty swallowing as well

These are the primary symptoms which will affect your throat in general. Some of the other symptoms that may show up are:

  1. Fever
  2. Nasal discharge
  3. Malaise or a general feeling of discomfort
  4. Chills

The parts of your body, which are affected the most tend to be your throat, tongue and the neck. The pain tends to persist for quite some time as you recover.

Causes of diphtheria
Diphtheria is usually spread by the following methods

  1. Airborne droplets: This is possibly the most common method of contracting the disease. This usually happens when a person is infected with diphtheria coughs or sneezes around you. The airborne droplets then travel from one person to another, transmitting the infection. This is particularly the case in crowded area such as public transport and public spaces.
  2. Touching personal items which may be infected: Touching used towels, paper tissues or drinking from an unwashed glass may cause an infection as well. These tend to happen mostly in an indoor setting such as offices and houses. Even toys, door and equipment handles can cause transmission of this virus.

If you are showing any of these symptoms, it is prudent to consult a doctor immediately as diphtheria, if left untreated, may also result in serious complications.

Sir in my teeth always having sensation when I take water and taking tea so sir please solve my problem.

Dentist, Jamshedpur
Hi tooth sensitivity can be due to enamel erosion because of bruxism, hard brushing and after the orthodontic treatment. Get investigated to rule out the exact cause of sensitivity. Use desensitising toothpaste like thermoseal ra toothpaste for one month. If you cant get relief consult the dentist for laminating or veneering.

Since food is meant to be enjoyed, retainers can be removed while having meals and keeping them safely back in their cases.

Having tooth problem as my jaw is narrow, tongue gets touch with the lower front teeths as it is maloclusion also. Wat to do?

Dentist, Bangalore
Hello Lybrate user, Narrow lower jaw leads to malocclusion creating less space for teeth which develop crowding and less space for tongue so tongue touches lower teeth .you can go for orthodontic treatment to correct this problem permanently.

My one Tooth at lower Job is removed, I wish to fit new with bridge etc. How far it will cost?

A.C.C.I - Accredited and Certified Course in Implantology, MDS - Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry, BDS
Dentist, Jammu
It would be advisable to have the missing tooth replaced by a bridge or for more longer durability an implant will be better. Regarding the cost - for anything you want to get done - there are lot of variations. The better the quality and the material as well as the expertise used the higher the cost. Its like you have a shawl or a stole - the better the material the greater the cost and if more the workmanship on the same again the greater the cost. So it depends what you want to ge done. Metaless crown and bridges are the best available today - E max or Lava but then these are also expensive to the dental surgeon.

My teeth is getting yellow day by day. Do not know how to get rid of it. I brush twice a day with Colgate. At times I get a yellow patch inside my mouth near tonsil area, it vanishes in a few days. Some I said me to use baking soda with lemon on my teeth, does it harm the teeth. Kindly guide me what to do.

Dentist, Mumbai
Dear Amritesh your teeth are getting yellow .you can use baking soda and lime juice paste.but very cautiously because this can harm teeth if used excessively . this yellowishness may be due to poor oral hygiene . you need to improve your oral hygiene and digestion . visit dental surgeon for scaling and polishing .

I am 34 but i think i dont have wisdom tooth. Is it possible? If yes then at what age does it come?

Dentist, Lucknow
You need to get an OPG Xray done so that the exact position of all your wisdom teeth can be ascertained. Sometimes they can get stuck in the jaw bone itself & sometimes they can be mal-aligned causing damage to the adjacent tooth. So its better to consult a dentist.

I have put on braces for 3 years now I have removed it but my teeth are not gone completely inside.

Dentist, Pune
Purpose of braces is to have your teeth in proper bite, function as well as aesthetics in relation to your jaws. Dentist will be the best judge for treatment outcome. Also you should wear retainer to maintain the position of teeth after braces are removed for six months.

Why is Coconut SO good for you?

Why is Coconut SO good for you?
Apart from its use in many Indian homes for traditional reasons, coconut has several health benefits to offer -

1) Helps diabetics by slowing sugar release into the bloodstream.
2) Boosts metabolism and increases energy because it is more likely to be burned as fuel than stored as body fat.
3) Helps treat malnutrition because it is easy to digest and absorb.
4) Kills disease-causing bacteria, fungi, yeasts and viruses because of the antimicrobial effects of its fatty acids.
5) Prevents strokes and brain disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
6) Prevent tooth decay - coconut oil fights bacteria responsible for tooth decay and could be a healthy, non-chemical additive in toothpaste and mouthwash.

I am 21 male. I have teeth on teeth. What is the most effective method to get rid of this problem!

Dentist, Noida
Hello First of all you need to consult a good dentist who can diagnose your problem of tooth over tooth which can be corrected through braces for permanent long term results but again a proper treatment planning is a must which will require even x-rays to be taken. Good luck!

I am suffering from tooth since 2y I have taken medicine from several dentist. But till date it is existing. What can I do for it?

BDS, CDE Endo-Prostho, CDE - Cast Partial & Complete Dentures
Dentist, Pune
Hello, you can do salt water rinses but this will give you a temporary relief. Pain could be because of cavity or infection to roots. Visit a dentist and get it checked. If there is a cavity get it filled or if there is an infection get it treated.
