See if your mother is suffering from arthritis then there is no choice but you have to decide when you want to get it done if pain is less and she is able to move around then you can wait.

I am 33 male have a ganglion cyst on right wrist. Is surgery necessary. Does surgery have side effects.

DM - Rheumatology, MD - General Medicine
Rheumatologist, Mumbai
No it isnt. Let it be. Surgery doesnt hv side effects , but it can always recurr, so no use. It won't give you any trouble except mild on and off pain. You can get steroid injected in it every 6 months or so, much easier than surgery and it might dispapear with this simple step.

I am 66 years old male. I have knee pain for more than 10 years. I could walk with some pain which was manageable. But now my knees are not following my wishes. The pain starts as soon as I start walking. Should I go for knee-replacement or there is some homeopathic medicine to make my life livable?

Hello, thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Please tell me duration of pain and what was the initiating factor for it? what medications you generally take and what has been your treatment history till now for existing problem. I would like to know whether you have got your inflammatory profile done till now and whether calcium and vitamin d testing/supplementation has been done. Also please let me know what all exercises you are doing on a daily basis. Normally such kind of pain especially walking on stairs at your age is due to a condition called as chondromalacia in which there is softening of cartilage of knee cap. But answer my questions and I will let you know how to proceed further in this case. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

Knee arthritis with age is mostly due to wear and tear known as osteoarthritis. There could be many other arthritis which affects knees , but OA is most common with age. You need replacement only if the knee becomes severely damaged. Operation not advisable usually before 60. If you keep weight control and exercise regularly you can galt progression. Many times progression is not in hands and it will get mote worn out with age and one might knee replacement. Some say glycosaminoglycans works fir oa , but frankly evidence miniscule. (Glucosamine) Also make sure that you don't have other arthritis type which can be probably treated medically
