Bursitis - 4 Ways You Can Prevent it

Fellowship In Arthroplasty and Arthroscopy, MS Orthopaedics, MBBS
Orthopedist, Gurgaon
Bursitis - 4 Ways You Can Prevent it

Bursitis is a disorder that is characterized by inflammation of a fluid filled sac called the bursa. Bursa is present in between various tissues such as muscles, tendons and bones where friction may occur. This sac cushions the tissues and prevents friction. The usual areas that are affected by this condition are hip, shoulder and the elbows.

The symptoms of bursitis are:
1. You will experience pain in the affected area
2. Tightness and stiffness in the area
3. Local swelling of the muscle
4. Redness of the area
5. Any physical contact with the area causes pain

Bursitis may also occur due to the following reasons:
1. Ageing results in loss of elasticity of the tendons, thus impairing their ability to tolerate any stressful activity
2. Sports such as baseball where you are required to throw the ball with force may lead to bursitis
3. If you do tasks that require kneeling down on a regular basis
4. Sitting on hard surfaces for extended periods of time
5. Abnormalities such as improperly placed joints
6. Inflammation from other conditions such as gout, thyroid disorders and rheumatoid arthritis may lead to bursitis

Treatment
The condition is treated by using a variety of methods such as exercise and medication. Antibiotics are used to treat any underlying infection causing bursitis. Injections may be administered to reduce inflammation in the affected area along with exercises to strengthen the affected muscle. In severe cases, the doctor may resort to surgery to treat this condition.

Prevention
You may use certain preventive measures to stay clear of bursitis. Some of them are
1. Lift with proper form: If you are lifting something heavy, then make sure you keep the spine straight and bend your knees slightly.
2. Take breaks: Don’t remain in the same position for long durations, take small breaks and walk around to release the stress from your legs.
3. Exercise: Do strength building workouts to build strength in the joints. Include mobility and flexibility stretches in your routine to keep your joints healthy, thus increasing the range of motion.
4. Maintain optimal weight levels: If you are obese, then take steps to reduce your weight. Maintain a proper diet to check your waistline. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

I have recently started long-distance running. From the past 15 days, I am feeling a mild pain in calf muscles of my left leg. This is a continuous pain. The left leg feels heavy and this is restricting me from further running. What should I do to get rid of this problem?

Treatment at first includes regular ice, Do it for 20-30 minutes every 3 to 4 hours for 2 to 3 days, or until the pain is gone, together with reduced mileage or rest. Addressing the causes is likely to include ensuring that shoes have adequate cushioning and stability, and building up training mileage slowly. Take anti-inflammatory painkillers. Do range-of-motion exercises. To strengthen the muscles of the lower leg, place a weighted ring on your foot. Point your foot up, in and out 10 times; perform three sets. The pain usually subsides as fitness improves. Go to physiotherapist to identify and treat issues in your legs or running mechanics that may be causing pain. A therapist can also help ease the pain and guide your return to sport. Best wishes.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Flat foot is a common problem which at your age can now be tackled with shoe modifications as advised. There are now centres available which do a detailed study of your gait and accordingly do the shoe modifications. Apart from that specific exercises aimed at strengthening the intrinsic muscles of the foot are very important. If you can send me your foot lateral standing x rays, I probably can see and advise you accordingly. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

Hi, if you have pain for more than 2 months, it's not a symptom any more but chronic pain disease. Important is to put diagnosis about pain generator (source of pain, if it from spine (disc, facet joints, nerve) then get the help of specialist such as interventional pain specialist or orthopedician in your city, but if it is due to muscular spasm still i'd advise to take from specialist for some medicine prescription and physiotherapy if that deemed necessary.

Back ache can be due to several reasons. It can be muscular, related to disc degeneration or prolapse, joint irritation or nerve pinching. Most common is muscle pain due to tight and weak back and abdominal muscles. Keep a positive attitude, focus more on keeping good posture especially when sitting for long hours, use lumbar support. Take frequent breaks and stretch in between. Try changing sleeping habits. Try hot or cold therapy as tolerated. Wish you speedy recovery.

Dear lybrate-user, to get relief from your problem you need to go for panch karma treatment, which will increase you joint and muscle flexibility and also make them stronger. Advised below; 1. Ayurvedic oil massage and steam 2. Janu basti - the knee joint is called janu sandhi in sanskrit; hence the name janu basti is given to the procedure done on knee joints. In this the knee joint is bathed with warm medicated oil or freshly prepared herbal decoction. Depending on the condition it can be practiced over both the knee joints or on one knee joint. It gives a magical relief from the pain and stiffness associated with knee pain. In many cases jaanu vasti provides a long standing relief. Indicated in: osteoarthritis of knee joints osteoporosis arthrosis of knee joints chronic pain of the knee joint kindly consult any specialist of ayurveda panch karma.
