My daughter has one heart hole of 3 point. She is 40 days old. I want to know this is major or minor problem?
Dear Lybrateuser, - The condition has to be monitored as she grows - a hole can gradually close itself on its own as she grows, if not then can be closed by implant device or surgery - if closure is not there then symptoms like breathlessness, tiredness, turning blue on exertion, activity can occur - condition has to be monitored by a cardiologist.

Hi, Is homeopathy better treatment for hypertension than allopathy? Is it lifelong?

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine, DM - Cardiology, Cardiac Device Specialist (CCDS - Physician )
Cardiologist, Delhi
Hi, Is homeopathy better treatment for hypertension than allopathy? Is it lifelong?
There have been no comparative study between homeopathy and allopathy with regard to which is better for hypertension so far. But yes, in allopathy BP has been well studied and it is a common knowledge that Hypertension is a condition which can vary from time to time, age and a lot of other factors. It requires life long management sometimes with just life style precautions and at others with both medicines and life style changes. Medicine and precautions may be needed to be taken for life in quite a few cases. It is important to keep BP in check because it can lead to different problems and so it is advisable to seek treatment. Best would be to consult a doctor preferably a cardiologist, discuss your concerns and apprehensions and then starting with lifestyle changes and treatment.

Does olive oil prevent heart disease? Does olive oil prevent heart disease? Does olive oil prevent heart disease?
There is no evidence that one oil is better than the other in preventing heart disease. More than type of oil, limiting the amount of oil is beneficial. Apart from that healthy food, exercise, avoiding smoking, good sleep, relaxation all these complement each other in preventing heart disease.

Benefits of Having Orange In Your Diet

Benefits of Having Orange In Your Diet

#1 Boosts Immunity

Oranges is an excellent source of vitamin c. A single medium-sized orange can fulfil about 72% of your daily requirement for vitamin c. Since vitamin c plays a crucial role as an antioxidant by protecting your body against the damage caused by free radicals generated in the body. It therefore reduces inflammation in immune related conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Although debatable, researchers suggest that vitamin c also plays an important role in strengthening immune responses of the body, protecting against recurring cold and cough or any other common infections. Here are 11 ways to include oranges in your diet.

#2 Helps prevent ageing of skin

There's a reason why oranges are popularly used in the beauty industry. Several beauty products including face packs, masks and creams that are available contain orange extract as a key ingredient. That's because vitamin c present in oranges also helps prevent skin damage, by eliminating free radicals. Vitamin c, being involved in synthesis of collagen, an important component to maintain skin's overall appearance and texture, prevents premature aging and wrinkling of the skin. Apart from vitamin c, oranges are packed with vitamin a that help keep the skin membranes healthy. Here are 8 fruit packs you can make at home for beautiful skin.

#3 Protects the eyes

Vitamin a in oranges helps keep mucus membranes in the eyes healthy. Available in the form of carotenoid compounds like lutein, beta carotene and zeaxanthin, vitamin a is protective against age-related macular degeneration, a vision-related condition that causes blindness. Besides, it also plays an important role in allowing your eyes to absorb the light. You may also read tomatoes- natural remedy for good vision.

#4 Help prevents heart disease

This is yet another health benefit of oranges which is attributed to its vitamin c level. Free radicals generated during various reactions taking place in the cells can trigger oxidation of cholesterol, causing the oxidised molecules to aggregate and stick to the walls of the arteries. This leads to build up of plaques that eventually block the arteries, causing heart attack, coronary artery disease or even stroke. Vitamin c in oranges takes care of these free radicals and neutralises them, thus playing a role in preventing heart disease. Besides they also contain flavonoids like hesperidin that lowers cholesterol level and prevents the arteries from getting blocked.

#5 Helps brain development

Folate/folic acid or vitamin b9 present in oranges promote brain development and keep the vital organ in mint condition. In fact, these nutrients also make orange a healthy fruit for pregnant woman as it prevents the baby from having neurological disorders later. Oranges also contain phytonutrients called polyphenols that play a role in development of learning and memory functions of the brain.

#6 Helps prevent cancer

Oranges contain a compound called d – limonene that has been shown to play an important role in preventing various types of cancer like lung cancer, breast cancer, skin cancer, etc. Additionally, the antioxidants and vitamin c help promote the body’s immunity which helps in fighting cancer cells. Oranges are highly fibrous fruits, which contributes to its cancer-protecting effect. A study revealed that about 10 to 15 per cent of colon cancer cases are caused by mutations in the dna. These mutations can prevented by consuming vitamin c rich sources like oranges. Here are some other health benefits of vitamin c you should know

#7 Pevents constipation

Oranges are a very good source of soluble and insoluble fibre, which helps keep your stomach and intestines healthy by preventing problems like irritable bowel syndrome. The fibre content in them adds bulk to the digested food and reduces transit time of feces, preventing constipation and straining.

#8 Improves sperm quality

Death is inevitable, but our legacy may live on through our offspring. The antioxidants and vitamin c present in most fruits, including oranges improves the quality and motility of your sperm thus keeping you fertile. Another vitamin called folic acid also is an essential nutrient for maintaining healthy sperms that you can obtain from oranges. It also protects the sperm from genetic damage, which might lead to birth defects.

#9 Great for diabetics

The rich fibre content of oranges has the ability to keep a track of sugar levels in the body, preventing diabetes. It is also a good option for those who are diabetic. Also worth mentioning is that good oranges have a sweet taste, and since diabetics aren’t allowed to eat sweets or other sugary foods, they can eat oranges to tingle their taste buds.

#10 Prevents hair loss

Orange has high vitamin c content which is required for producing collagen which, in turn, is responsible for keeping the tissues in your hair together. Nobody likes bald patches on their head, and eating oranges can ensure that you do not have to part with your lovely hair as you grow older.

1.. Go for fasting once a week. You can go for absolute fasting or rely on a liquid diet to digest ama (toxin). Fasting should be followed by hot fomentation or by taking a bath with lukewarm water or steam bath. 2.. After fasting and fomentation, mix powdered long pepper, black pepper and dried ginger in equal quantities and take 1 teaspoon of this powdered mix with lukewarm water twice a day. This will help you restore your digestive fire. 3.. Take one tablespoon of castor oil before going to bed, once or twice a week. It helps in cleansing ama (toxin) build up and balancing vata. 4.. Mix equal quantities of powdered fenugreek seeds, turmeric and ginger powder. Take one teaspoon daily in the morning and evening. 5.. One serving of meat or fish is about what fits in the palm of your hand. One serving of fresh fruit is about the size of your fist. Load your plate with fruits and vegetables -- five to nine servings a day -- to help lower LDL "bad" cholesterol. Antioxidants in these foods may provide the benefit. Or it may be that when we eat more fruits and veggies, we eat less fatty foods. Either way, you'll also help lower blood pressure and maintain a healthy weight. Foods enriched with plant sterols, such as some margarine spreads, yogurts, and other foods, can also help lower LDL cholesterol. Need a snack? A handful of nuts is a tasty treat that helps in lowering cholesterol. Nuts are high in monounsaturated fat, which lowers LDL "bad" cholesterol while leaving HDL "good" cholesterol intact. We all need a little fat in our diet -- about 25% to 35% of our daily calories. But the type of fat matters. Unsaturated fats -- like those found in canola, olive, and safflower oils -- help lower LDL "bad" cholesterol levels and may help raise HDL "good" cholesterol. You need carbohydrates for energy, but some do your body more good than others. Beans, and whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat, have more fiber and raise sugar levels less. These help lower cholesterol and keep you feeling full longe Aerobic exercise ("cardio") such as brisk walking lowers risk of stroke and heart disease, helps you lose weight, and keeps bones strong. If you're just starting out, try a 10-minute walk and gradually build up from there.

If you people have not been taking care about diet after surgery in 2007, start now, avoid oily food, take lots of fresh seasonal vegetables and fruits, a glass of warm water with lemon juice + spoon of honey every morning on empty stomach. Some good fats like a katori of assorted nuts + a spoon of desighee/ butter every day to boost up good fats and to reduce bad fats, stay away from transfats like namkeens, burgers, pizzas, tinned food and make it a habit to take less salt, avoid chutneys, pickles, papads etc as salt is used as a preservative in all packed foods bought from market.

Dear Yes, acidity causes 'heart burns' that seem exactly like heart attack symptom. You need to take direct sunlingt on your bare back for 15-20 mins daily (sunrise best time) to overcome Vit D need. Make sure you drink lots of water, eat on time, avoid spicy, fried, stale, packages foods. Start eating One meal made of ONLY salads, dahi, boiled vegetables and fruits of your choice. Chew your food properly. Make sure you keep proper gap between dinner and sleep. This should improve full health. Regards.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist,
Hello. My self pregnant from two months. I have high bp from last 4 years and have on medication. But becoz m pregnan...
What you are suffering is called hypertension. And it needs medicines because the body's bp needs to be regulated or else it will cause damage to the vital organs like brain, kidneys etc. Now that you are pregnant, the medicines must be continued, as they were. There is no need to reduce medicines unless you have symptoms related to it. As the medicines are reduced, the bp is remaining high, and not coming below 140/80. In a pregnant woman with hypertension usually there are chances of abortion, and intrauterine bleeding etc. Along with seizures (fits). Usually in pregnancy, the woman's blood volume rises and this happens from 5-7 month. During this period there is a chance of developing hypertension which is now called pregnancy induced hypertension. Since you already have high bp, if your bp increases after 20 weeks it will need special care of the fetal nourishment and growth must be monitored. Depin is safe in pregnancy and there are other drugs too which can be given. Talk to your doctor and ask the gynec about the reduced dose. If required take a second opinion. Usually in patients having previous abortions, progesterone is given to protect the pregnancy and prevent abortion. There are many types of progesterone. Natural micronised progesterone, injectable progesterone, and some synthetic progesterone. Duphaston falls in progesterone category. It is not known to cause high blood pressure but it has water retaining properties which may have alerted you. But you can talk about it to your gynec and doctor may change duphaston to other progesterones.

You have essential fatty deficiency along with several other vitamins as a result your seretonin (neuro transmitter) and other feel good enzyme levels are low as a result your body is not capable of stress management. You must eat walnuts, flex seeds, fishes like salmon, mackerel, sardines etc. Severe deficiency is treated nutritional supplements, especially when the soils are depleted and our diet is unable to provide our body with essential nutrients.

Hi. Blood pressure is something that keeps fluctuating. It depends on your many various factors. So once you are alright, better not to check your bp so often. Checking it once a year or so is ok. Anyways, 130/80 mm hg bp during pregnancy is not called as high bp. So don't worry at all. Take care.
