milk offers a rich source of calcium, a mineral essential for healthy bones and teeth. Cow's milk is also often fortified with vitamin D, which is also beneficial for bone health. However, other nutrients are also necessary for bone health, such as vitamin K, strontium, magnesium and vitamin C 1 year old child can take and people of all ages throughout the year and winter only.

What Is Early Childhood Development?

The early childhood period is considered to be the most important developmental phase throughout the lifespan.  This period focuses on the physical, social/emotional and language/cognitive domains of development of a child, which have direct effects on their overall development as an adult in the future.

Physical Development: Physical developments of a child are associated with the motor skills and physical growth of the child. As a child grows and his or her nervous system become more mature, the child becomes more capable of performing increasingly complex actions such as walking, running, balance, and coordination which involve the larger muscles like arms and legs, as well as, some more intricate skills such as drawing, writing, grasping objects, throwing, waving, and catching, involving the smaller muscles in the fingers, toes, eyes, and other areas. Physical growth follows a directional pattern, such as the body's core, legs and arms develop before the small muscles in the fingers and hands.  The muscles in the center of the body become stronger and develop before those in the feet and hands. Development goes from the head to the toes.

Cognitive Development: Cognitive abilities are associated with memory, reasoning, problem-solving and thinking that continue to emerge throughout childhood. There are four Stages of Cognitive Development:

Language Development: It is the most remarkable development in children. According to several researches, it is found that language development begins at fetal level, as the fetus is able to identify the speech and sound patterns of the mother's voice and by the age of four months, a child can distinguish between sounds and read lips. Infants are able to differentiate between speech sounds from all languages; however, around the age of 10 months they lose this ability and begin to recognize their native language only.

Hi doctors, My 20 month old baby girl, suddenly got cold, fever and loose stools with vomit, she tends to vomit whenever she coughs, my pead told due to infection from bottle feeding and to stop at once, then to avoid milk for 1 week, so I feed her with juices only, she prefers only orange juice so I give her fresh juice, but is it safe to give orange juice when cold is there? Any way stopping bottle suddenly is also quite challenging, she accepts milk n juice from bottle only, slowly I need to change her.

Hi Your child having viral illness and it seems because of problem of lactose intolerance your pediatrician has advised you to stop milk. Definitely the problem of infection is most probably due to bottle feeding but it is also quite natural that you cannot stop the bottle feeding all at once, gradually wean off the child from the bottle and in the meantime strictly adhere to sterilizing the feeding bottles every time you feed the baby. Instead of giving orange juice, when the baby is having cold prefer to give semi solid foods like Daliya, semolina,kichri, etc to your baby.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a brain disorder marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development. Here’s how to help yourself overcome sleeping problems: •Buy an egg timer. Using a tangible instrument like an egg timer helps keep your family on track with bedtime schedules. •Commit to a set schedule. Make sure that you go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning, including weekends. Staying up later on weekend nights and wake up later the next morning just makes your weekdays more difficult. If you are fighting fatigue despite the set schedule, you might need to increase your sleep time. Remember that younger children do need more sleep than older children. •Remove sources of stimulation. During the hour you get ready for bed, turn off the TV, music, computers, and video games. Don’t engage in arguments or initiate any rough play. This is an hour that should be very peaceful, That means that parents also need to be peaceful — no arguing with each other or the children. •Use a reward system. Give yourself stars, or stickers that can be traded in the next morning for a small reward. These rewards come when expected actions, like brushing teeth, are completed on time. Rewards may also be earned by staying in bed after lights-out. •Keep the house quiet. During the bedtime preparation and once you are in bed, keep the house quiet and calm. It’s a good idea to keep your voices down and turn down TV and music. •Return calmly to bed. Even with a reward system and a cozy bed, you might still want to get up. Return to bed without indulging in talking, arguing, threatening , or any other energizing activity. •Allow a full hour to get ready for bed. Once you have your egg timer, you can use it to count down the hour you need to wind down. Here’s how to break down the hour: oFirst 30 minutes: Set the egg timer for 30 minutes. This period of time is for hygiene — bathing, brushing teeth, and putting on pajamas. ONext 15 minutes: Set the egg timer for 15 minutes. This period of time is for a relaxing activity, such as reading a book, doing some relaxation exercises, or practicing deep breathing. OFinal 15 minutes: Set the timer for 15 minutes. This is for getting into bed (and staying there). In bed, there should be some sort of ritual between the parent and the child. Consider reading a favorite book, snuggling, praying, identifying good things that happened that day, telling a favorite story, or some other soothing and affectionate activity. Lights go out at the last “ding.” •Wake up gently. You need a good plan for waking The “bugle call” approach can actually set you up for a day-long spiral of ill temper. Instead, try a gentle action, such as opening the blinds or listening to a calm music and getting up. •Build in getting-ready time. You may need a morning schedule that is just as generous in time and structure as their pre-bed ritual. A chaotic rush to get out the door sets the wrong tone for the day. •Limit Caffeine and stimulants late in the day and Be Active. Caffeine and other stimulants consumed too close to bed time will keep you tossing and turning all night. The same goes for taking stimulant prescription medications too late in the day. •Exercise. Not only is exercise beneficial for your overall health, but it plays a very big role in helping you sleep and feel better. However, it is not recommended to workout or engage in any major exercise too close to bed either. It can actually have the opposite effect in helping you achieve the rest you desire. Try and get regular exercise during the day or very early evening to avoid being wired at night. Regards,

He needs to be gently and lovingly advised and do not shout and get angry with him which will make him rebel. If you cannot mange he should be shown to a child counsellor . But he is only 7 years and too young and hope that he will become normal as he grows up

Vitamin d (ergocalciferol-d2, cholecalciferol-d3, alfacalcidol) is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus. Having the right amount of vitamin d, calcium, and phosphorus is important for building and keeping strong bones. Vitamin d is used to treat and prevent bone disorders (such as rickets, osteomalacia). Vitamin d is made by the body when skin is exposed to sunlight. Sunscreen, protective clothing, limited exposure to sunlight, dark skin, and age may prevent getting enough vitamin d from the sun. If the baby feeding milk and taking nutrients it is not absolutely necessary to give calcium supplement. But there is no harm in giving to a growing child as his requirements of all vitamins are more. Let us say you can give till one year after that he must get all nutrition from good food. You might think, as a parent, that if you behave strictly then your child will become well-behaved. But research and studies have shown that the opposite happens. Strict parenting leads to children who behave worse than others and they suffer from low self-esteem.

Some other reasons why being strict is harmful:

  1. Never learning self-regulation: Responsibility and self-discipline have to be learned by the children themselves. When you put harsh limits on them, they never learn self-regulation. If they think the limits don’t sound too harsh, they will learn to accept them. But the limits placed on them should never be controlling. If this happens, children see themselves as being controlled and no one enjoys being controlled.
  2. Instilling fear: If you are being authoritarian (parenting in which there are high demands and low sympathy) instead of empathetic, then your children will become scared of you.   5. Rebelling: Children tend to be angrier and become rebellious when they have strict parents. The need to break free and not conform to the non-empathetic limits that forces them to act out. They might even nurture thoughts about leaving home and running away.
  6. Lying: Strict parenting creates excellent liars. Children learn to lie when they are in trouble. They think lies will placate their parents and they can get away with anything.

Nursing improperly often becomes a big reason for tooth decay and caries in babies. The way out is to get the baby tooth cared for from the very first day. This form of tooth decay is associated with nursing, when the baby sucks the pacifier, or takes other sugary juices or drinks, or formula milk from a nursing bottle.

The main causes of nursing bottle caries:
The babies are often fed in nursing bottles or feeding bottles, and the bottle nipple often stays in the mouth for long; sometimes overnight also if not taken care of. Again, the babies are pacified with pacifiers, which are often dipped in honey or a sugar solution, and this again brings in more reasons for dental caries. In any of the situations described, the baby's newly formed teeth which are susceptible to all forms of decay and damages while being gentle and new can get cavities. The sugary liquids and milk can form a coating on the teeth which brings in cavities.

How to prevent the nursing caries:
The best option to prevent is not to leave the baby with the bottle or pacifier for long. Again, the pacifier or the bottle should be always washed properly, sterilized and not left in the mouth of the baby uncared, especially during sleep time, when the baby sleeps while sucking onto them.

There are some steps to follow to prevent the early tooth decay and maintain baby dental hygiene. They are:

1. Even before the first tooth comes out, massage and clean the baby's gums with a clean washcloth or soft cotton everyday, and after every long feeding.

2. You don't need toothpaste to start brushing the first few new teeth that come out. Just brush without a toothpaste and use a very soft gentle brush to form the habit. In areas where no tooth has come up, brush and massage the gums only.

  • When all the teeth have come up, start flossing everyday
  • Try to take the baby for a dental checkup at least every year if not every six months.
  • Try to cut down on the consumption of extra sweet beverages. Add some water to the fruit juice to dilute the concentration and sweetness.

All these steps mentioned are great to start healthy and good dental care and hygiene, and if you follow them well, then dental caries will be away.

ADHD is not fun for the child!

ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a condition characterized by an inability to concentrate and sustain attention. It is a biological problem of the brain.

Due to poor concentration the child feels bored easily and may become impulsive and appear to be mischievous

He may answer out of turn and will talk even when not spoken to.

He may have difficulty sitting at one place.

He maybe restless, fidgety and jumping about.

This will hamper his ability to remember things and may become forgetful and lose things.

This is something the child does not do on purpose and feels guilty and unhappy about, making the child feel low on self-esteem which may manifest as aggressive and rebellious behavior.

Tips for the teacher and parents

7. Working with interruptions:

Reducing the interruptions of children with ADD/ADHD should be done carefully so that the child’s self-esteem is maintained, especially in front of others. Develop a “secret language” with the child with ADD/ADHD. You can use discreet gestures or words you have previously agreed upon to let the child know they are interrupting. Praise the child for interruption-free conversations.

8. Dealing with Impulsivity:

Give consequences immediately following misbehavior. Be specific in your explanation, making sure the child knows how they misbehaved.

Recognize good behavior out loud. Be specific in your praise, making sure the child knows what they did right.

Write the schedule for the day on the board or on a piece of paper and cross off each item as it is completed. Children with impulse problems may gain a sense of control and feel calmer when they know what to expect.

9. Dealing with Hyperactivity:

Ask children with ADD/ADHD to run an errand or do a task for you, even if it just means walking across the room to sharpen pencils or put books away.

Encourage the child to play a sport—or at least run around before and after school.

Provide a stress ball, small toy, or other object for the child to squeeze or play with discreetly at his or her seat.

Limit screen time in favor of time for movement. Your child will enjoy fast games like Subway Surfer and Temple Run.

Make sure a child with ADD/ADHD never misses recess or PT period.

With the word accident, the first thing that comes to our mind is a traffic accident or an outdoor accident. We all may usually relate accidents with outdoor hazards, but little do we realize that the place that we consider to be the safest, that is, our homes, has a number of hazards itself. Accidents at home are usually caused due to negligence. Children are especially prone to be hurt by such accidents. Just like we stay careful outside our home, it is also important to maintain safety indoors to prevent accidents.

Here are some of the common accidents that occur mostly to children along with the preventive steps that can help you to avoid them:

1. Fall: Falling is one of the most common accidents that children experience. There may be a number of factors such as objects scattered on the floor, the floor being slippery, unstable walking of the child, lack of supervision, etc.
Prevention

  • Keep floors clean, dry and free from unnecessary obstructions.
  • Always keep a check on your toddler as he learns to walk
  • Do not keep babies unattended when they are sitting on a high surface
  • Keep the bed rail of the baby cot raised whenever the child is in it

2. Choking: Choking is a serious condition that leads to breathlessness due to accidental swallowing of foods or objects, covering head by blankets, strangulation, etc.
Prevention:

  • Avoid toys that have small detachable parts
  • Keep a watch on your child when he/she plays with small objects
  • Keep children away from buckets or tubs filled with water
  • Never allow your children to play while eating

3. Burns: Burns may occur from contact with hot objects, hot water or fire.
Prevention:

  • Make sure that you don't hold a child and a hot object or beverage at the same time
  • Make sure that your child doesn't enter the kitchen without supervision
  • While preparing warm water for bathing your child in, always check the water temperature beforehand

4. Poisoning: Poisoning takes place under conditions of food poisoning or accidental swallowing of harmful substances like detergents, insecticides or drugs.
Prevention:

  • Keep all medicines, detergents, soaps and chemicals out of the child's reach 
  • Store all chemicals and toxic substances in their respective containers or make sure the containers are labelled properly
  • Always keep a first-aid box ready at hand if you have a child at home. For severe conditions talk to a doctor or visit a hospital immediately.
