Blocked nose, Sinusitis, Respiratory allergies-solutions without over the counter Medicines.

Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MBBS
General Physician, Delhi

Respiratory allergies are aggravated during a change of season and it is rampant during Feb and march in and around Delhi/ NCR. Allergies are aggravated by gas, bloating and are accompanied by dry skin, dry throat, cough, sneezing and wheezing. When allergy strikes, phlegm (balgam) blocks the nose and sinuses. Allergy may or may not be accompanied by fever but body ache is for sure. Normally for this type of low-grade fever antibiotics are not required but these allergies are not self-limiting like the flu with which it can be confused. Stress is another factor that aggravates the allergic effects. Ginger helps, so does honey and black pepper and cinnamon but on top of the list is steam to inhale, steam is antiseptic too, remember your doctor sterilizing instruments by autoclave which is based on the formula of a pressure cooker-lots of a stem is generated and everything (except plastic) including clothes and drapes get sterilized. Take a handy covered vessel like the one used in beauty parlors, switch on while it is kept on your table and cover your face with a towel, deep breathe steam, you will feel the passages opening up and phlegm melting which you can spit out without an effort of a violent cough. Avoid heavy, processed, refined and processed foods. 2) triphla helps fight allergy too, its powder or tablets help to reduce inflammation anywhere in the body. 3) wear cotton or linen 4) meditation helps reduce stress 5) benefits of honey are known to everyone. Do not take honey with steaming hot beverages, take it with warm water only. 6) ginger- some people chew it raw, some mothers give a drop of its juice+ some honey to their toddlers, some people make a concoction by boiling it in water at low heat and consuming it like tea/ coffee with a little milk 7) fresh indoor plants minus dust on the leaves gives fresh oxygen and inhaling deeply fresh air does open up blocked respiratory passages. 8) eat less salt as it leads to water retention making a condition worse 9) Guduchi also helps 10) maintain hygiene, do not skip daily bath with warm water. 11) if entire family including small kids want to inhale the steam for some time, make use of the smallest room in the house with doors closed, keep an electrical kettle, boiling for some time, entire room becomes steam room and breathe normally, passages of normal persons will also become free of any allergy. 12) everyone is lazy if asked to go to the kitchen to heat water but simple home remedies can help family and save money on extra medicines tests which are not required in simple seasonal allergies.

Nose Bleed : What You Can Do?

MBBS
General Physician,
Nose Bleed : What You Can Do?

Nose bleeds is a common ailment that can be troublesome and often difficult to control. Definitive cure lies in, firstly proper diagnosis of the disease condition and secondly immediate steps take to control bleeding as an emergency.

1. For children: children are very prone for nose bleed. The most common cause being frequent upper respiratory tract infection followed by frequent nose pricking. Children should also be enquired for any nose trauma. However there may be other systemic causes like bleeding disorders of blood etc that need to be looked upon.
2. Adults: hypertension along with nose trauma seems to be most common cause. Care should be taken to look upon contributory cause like forceful blowing of nose, constipation, chronic cough etc. Systemic diseases like chronic kidney disease, bleeding disorders etc should be investigated.

What to do when a nose bleeds:

Step 1: nose pinching - this is one of the most effective method to control nose bleeding and serve as a first aid. It should continue for at least 20 mins with head in upright posture.

Step 2: nasal drops - 2 drops of oxymetazoline nasal drops (0.05 % for adults. 0.025 % for children) should be instilled in the bleeding nose and then nose pinching should continue.

Step 3: take immediately to emergency hospital
Now after the first aid performed in home or on the way, patient should be rushed to hospital where definitive treatment can be started.

Discharging ears are not a good sign. Take private consultation and go ahead with Dr. Advice. You may need operation. Ear is close to important structures like brain, facial nerve, lest you get other problems like paralysis of face and brain abscess though uncommon.

Surgery is asked only for chronic tonsillitis. As there is a risk of developing tonsillary cancer if kept held for too long. Cost varies anything from 25000/- to 35000/- both tonsils togather. For unaffording patients there are social works department in major govt or municipality hospitals. The social worker can help to raise funds.

I am 67 year old man and I have the problem of tinnitus (hearing ringing sound) for the last few months. I recently consulted an ENT specialist in Pune (where I live). She told me it happens as result of weakening of nerves in the ears due to aging. She prescribed Absolut3G, a capsule containing a number of antioxidants and melamine, containing B-vitamins for 3 months which I am taking. Apart from this, can you recommend any Ayurvedic medicines to help me? Any other advice?

B.A.M.S, MD (Ayu.) Kayachikitsa
Ayurveda,
Thanks for contacting with your health query As you have already taken an opinion of an ENT specialist thus she must have taken due consideration in taking up your case. 1. One should check for Blood Pressure, neck movements, and look for pallor and murmur and check for cochlear symptoms (deafness/tinnitus) & vestibular symptoms (vertigo & dizziness) 2. If the symptoms are not controlled promptly, ask for Hb%, X-ray cervical spine, ENT & Ophthalmic check up 3. In old age cervical spondilytis is one of the commonest cause for giddiness. 4. If your are hypertensive and complaining of above symptoms then either it may be excess dose or postural hypotension in which case one has to stop the drug for a day, then adjust the dose or use a different drug 5..bed rest, avoid movement of the neck, if giddiness is severe. Stop smoking/alcohol. Make sure drugs like anti histaminic, or anti hypertensive are not the culprit. Use cervical collar if cervical spondylitis. For Ayurveda medicine kindly consult me on Lybrate itself to know more about the package.

Hello lybrate-user. The pain you r having can be a tonsilar infection. U can open the mouth and see in the mirror if you can see some red swelling in the throat area inside, it'll confirm the diagnosis. Please consult your physician. Mr. lybrate-user, It would have been better had you mentioned the actual TSH values, because that would have given a clear idea as to what is referred as normal. If TSH is between 3 to 4 mU/L, then only all the symptoms are in check. Thanks.
