I am suffering from scabies from last 4 weeks. I have used a lot of ointments for it. But still I didn't get rid from it. Please suggest me what should I do? Or should I go to any specific clinic. Please reply me. I am so disturbed about it.

MBBS, MD - Internal Medicine
Internal Medicine Specialist, Faridabad
Scabies is an itchy skin condition caused by the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabei. It is common all over the world, and can affect anyone. Scabies spreads quickly in crowded conditions where there is frequent skin-to-skin contact between people. Hospitals, child-care centers, and nursing homes are examples. Scabies can easily infect sex partners and other household members. Sharing clothes, towels, and bedding can sometimes spread scabies. This can happen much more easily when the infested person has crusted scabies. You cannot get scabies from a pet. Pets get a different mite infection called mange. Symptoms are Pimple-like irritations or a rash Intense itching, especially at night Sores caused by scratching The infected person's clothes, bedding and towels should be washed in hot water and dried in a hot dryer. Treatment is also recommended for household members and sexual partners.Several lotions are available to treat scabies. Medicines that may be prescribed include: 5% permethrin cream: This is the most common treatment for scabies. It is safe for children as young as 1 month old and women who are pregnant.  25% benzyl benzoate lotion. 10% sulfur ointment.  10% crotamiton cream. 1% lindane lotion.

Infertility- Stress Could Be the Cause

Have you been trying to have kids for a long time? Is inability and delay giving you sleepless nights?  It is important to know that Stress alone is a major factor for infertility.

Can Stress Have an Effect on Your Fertility?

If your mind and body is under stress your body is signaled to release a hormone - Adrenalin. This is a stress relieving hormone and gives your body the rush to face the stress. This hormone inhibits the utilization of the hormone Progesterone, which is essential for fertility. Also during stress Prolactin, another hormone, is relapsed which also interferes with infertility. Hence to conceive its essential that your anxiety levels are under control.

Chronic Stress also decreases libido:

Chronic stress may cause lack of libido as well as a decrease in general fertility. This has become such a common issue that they have created a name for it Stress Induced Reproductive Dysfunction. These facts are very important to consider if you have been trying to conceive with no results. It also shows that stress relief should be a part of every couple's conception plan even if they are going through IVF.

Ways to reduce stress & improve fertility:

If you are having difficulty to conceive, it's imperative that you get fertility tests done and also evaluate your life. Look out for the stress points that may be hindering a relationship. Remember defeating the stress may be the solution to your worries.

  • Reduce stress in your life: The issues in your life may be work or result related. You need to learn to balance your personal and professional life. The sooner you do it the better; after all you are preparing yourself to welcome a new born in your life.

  • Change your reactions: Get a hang of the situation and react accordingly. Over reaction to a situation can harm your body and mind. Stop bothering so much about the future.

  • Let few things be the way they are: Stop getting bothered about people. Remember by nature everything will fall in place. Let few things be the way they are.

  • Make it your habit to reduce stress: Call it an obsession or a practice, train your mind to choose options where there is less stress.

  • Sleep well: A good rest is essential for a healthy mind and body. Meditate, do yoga or seek counseling. Go for facials if it sooths you.

Please note that if your fertility reports are normal, then it's just a matter of time. Give you, your partner and your body time. There are certain medical complications or disorders that can also be responsible for infertility. Be calm and composed so that you are able to face the rough waters clearly with your partner.

I am 62 years old. I have been applying hair dye for long time. Is it harmful? People say it leads to cancer! Pl help.
Hi Mr. lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking guidance. As far as I understand, not all dyes will potentially cause cancer. But some, dyes especially the semi-permanent and permanent ones, may have certain chemicals that are carcinogenic. One needs to consciously reduce exposure to such dyes to be on a safer side. You may as well choose a suitable natural hair dye instead. I declare no conflict of interest while I state the above-mentioned. Hope this clarifies. Do take care.

Dear lybrate-user. Thanks for the question. A baby inherits DNA from both its parents. Prenatal paternity tests can identify if a man is the father of a baby by looking at samples. Paternity testing during pregnancy is so simple thanks to non invasive prenatal testing. Questions regarding paternity during pregnancy are common. Seeking answers and resolving your concerns has physical, emotional and financial benefits for both you and your unborn child. Any equipped hospital can do DNA test. Do talk to your gynecologist about this matter. Take care.

Right Diet for Students during Exam Time

Our school and college days play a vital role in our lives and the exam time is the most dreaded part of the year. Our parents tend to take special care of our health at this time as they don't want to us to get down with some sickness and not give our best in exams.

Research has proved that the food we eat directly affects our performance in exams. There are some food items that have to be taken and many that have to be avoided at this time.

DOs

1. Drink lot of water and drinks that make your body cool as studying late into the night will increase the body heat.
2. Eat fresh vegetables and fruits.
3. Almonds, other nuts and sprouts are a must in your diet.
4. Try Having Mixed Balance Diet- Moderate CHO, High protein with essential fats, this will help you to be more alert and avoid sleepiness during studies.
5. Include good quality proteins like Fish, Eggs, Milk products, Sprouts etc.
6. Munch Fruits and Vegetables in between as to keep going for long hours.

Don't

1. Avoid outside food till the end of exams.
2. Junk food and oily food slows down your body, so avoid it.
3. Do not take too much of coffee and tea for staying awake as they can cause acidity and heat burn.
4. Do not forget any meals but eat only for half your appetite or we will feel sleepy.
5. Avoid long gaps between meals.
6. Don't try any new meals.

These food habits are to be followed on a regular basis, but if it is not possible make sure it is followed during the exam time.
