I do lot of travelling. Almost 17 days a month. Only taking boiled foods. My back pain is more realised when I sleep under fan. Also I got pain in right elbow. Under normal condition there is no pain but when I lift some weight it hurts .Doctor prescribed me etoshine 90 mg. Still not healed. Please help me with some medication & exercise.

The medicine has temporary effect if your back muscles are weak because of your long travelling or sitting hours you need to start strengthening exercises for your back. Correct your posture keep your back and neck straight while sitting keep a small pilllw behind your lower back while sitting, take frequent breaks and walk. Learn these exercises from a physiotherapist and do them two times a day after hot water fomentation. It should help.

I am a 63 year old man. I had brain hemorrhage 6 years back. I had been taking blood thinner and anti cholesterol medicines. Now I have developed pain in my knees especially in the right knee. What is the cause of the pain and what is the solution.

Hi, Lower back pain can happen due to several causes. However at your age it is often due to disc degeneration. This in common terms would mean early stages of spondylosis. An award winning scientific research done by my team revealed has shown that by the time Indians reach 30 years of age, 30 % start showing signs of disc degeneration and a handful of them start having episodes of back pain such as yours. There's no need to get worried as this is a part of the normal physiological process. For pain, I would advice you to take a pain killer twice a day for 5 days. Use hot compress twice daily for 15 mins each time and a gel (oxalgin nano gel) 3 times a day. Apart from this go for a walk twice a day. Avoid bending much and do not lift heavy weights and sit or squat on the floor. Go to a physiotherapist who will teach you core strengthening exercises. While the degeneration can not be reversed, it can be prevented from aggravating. Best of luck!

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. If back muscles are in a spasm because of any reason then you can get straightening of lumbar lordosis in lower back region. If you have localized back pain with no other symptoms like radiating leg pain, neurological symptoms like numbness, weakness, paresthesias etc, then you can start with following recommendations for initial period of 2-3 weeks: - to maintain proper posture of your back while working and sleeping - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or paracetamol or one which suits you - physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. - avoid lifting heavyweight/ acute forward bending in mornings etc we will observe you for next 2-3 weeks how you respond to this conservative management protocol. If you are not feeling better, then we will have to get some investigations like dynamic x rays of lower back and few blood tests for evaluation. Apply hot fomentation twice daily. Avoid bending in front. Postural correction- sit tall, walk tall. Extension exercises x 15 times x twice daily - lying on tummy, take left arm up for 3 seconds, then bring it down, right arm up for 3 seconds, bring down. Bring right leg up, hold for 3 seconds, bring it down. Then right leg up and hold for 3 seconds and bring it down. Repeat twice a day- 10 times. Bhujang asana -- lie flat on your stomach, keeping the palms out, bend the neck backward, take a deep breath and while holding it for 6 seconds, raise the chest up. Release breath and relax your body. Repeat the exercise 15 times twice daily. Core strengthening exercises- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day.

Hi, apply rumalaya liniment and massage for 10 mins and give hot water fomentation. This can be done thrice daily. If the pain is severe, take tab. Yogaraja guggulu 1-1-1 with hot water after food. Use soft medium sized pillow while sleeping. Perform neck exercises for 10 mins in the morning and evening regularly.

Kindly show me a photograph of the affected part. Rule out diabetes & vit. D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Spring beds, folding beds or thick matress are harmful Do hot fomantation. Paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days. Caldikind plus 1tab od x10. Do neck, back & general exercises. It may have to be further investigated. You will need other supportive medicines also. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take. If it does not give relief in 1 wk, contact me again. Do not ignore. It could be beginning of a serious problem.

I am a 31.5 years old man who has been working in a Corporate environment for more than 11 years now. For the last 11+ years, I have been doing evening / night shifts. Recently, I have moved on a Project for 2 weeks where I have to do morning shift. From past 2 days, I have been waking up at 8 AM and go to bed by 12 / 1 AM. The issue is that I have started getting pain in my upper back (Parallel to Ribs). This pain starts around 10 at night and there is also a minor pain in my throat (Sore throat). When I wake up at 8 in the morning, the pain is there. However as I take a shower and get ready for work, the pain almost goes away and then starts again at 10 PM. I have never had this type of pain (In upper back) in my life. Infact, I really never had any body ache besides some minor back pain in back due to stress and that went away years ago. I am really confused whether it's due to change in lifestyle or is it something serious. I agree that my lifestyle is very unhealthy. I am a smoker who smokes 8 - 9 cigarettes a day and have been smoking from past 16 years.

Hello Mr. lybrate-user, Upper back and throat pain is due to prolong sitting and environment of your work profile that you are doing right now. And you mentioned that you smoke from last 16 years right, so prolong smoker have many death full diseases n even death due to collapse of lung and smoke also dysfunctional of oesophageal track. So, in my opinion, my suggestion for upper back pain is a big deal, if you stopped smoking you save 3 thing first, your life from death full disease: you save the environment n you also save the world. About your pain, cercumductio n rotator motion of 3/4 times daily basis before you start your work.

Further details of your back pain is needed to give a treatment plan according to diagnosis. Backache in young age is commonly due to 1. Muscle strain resulting from improper posture. 2. Intervertebral disc bulge or prolapse. Follow these to get relief. 1. Take anti inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen round the clock for pain relief 2.Take rest for 3 to 4 days but avoid total bed rest. 4. Do back strengthening and stretching exercises daily once pain is relieved. 5.Apply analgesic cream over back followed by warm fomentation. 6. Keep pillow behind your knees at bedtime. While sleeping on sides keep pillow between knees. 7. Do not bend and lift weights. 8. If back pain is accompanied with radiating leg pain or tingling , numbness or weakness, consult immediately. If problem persists you will need to undergo MRI of lumbosacral spine. For further queries consult again.
