Specula of my right shoulder is fractured badly due to byke accident two days ego. One Dr. suggested for surgery while other one suggested complete rest no surgery. What should I do? Is there any risk if I take some more days to take decision?

Scapula fracture can be treated without surgery. Depends upon type and site of fracture show your x rays better decide within a week, because fracture will start healing on its own.

I am 28 years old lady. I am suffering from lower back pain for around 1 month and I have done my urine sample examination. In the report, it used to write epithelial cells ++, pus cells 3-5, RBC 1-2 and other chemical findings & microscopic findings are nil. When I consult doctor the doctor said I might be suffering from some infection.

This is a general low back ache and for this you can follow these measures: one keep a pillow right under the knee while sleeping, next is you can keep ice in the painful area for about 5--10 minutes, if pain still persists you can stretch your body by twisting the waist on both sides how we used to do in the school drill similarly you can try which will help you relax as well will reduce the pain. It looks like you are anaemic. If you have back pain after you sit for long hours then it is due to your haemoglobin levels as it is important to check that. Anaemia always leads to the symptoms of being tired and also having back / leg pain though there may not be any pathological reasons for back pain. If you have low back pain and sciatica you can undergo intermittent pelvic traction where in your half of your body weight will be added in the electronic traction so that that would help you to reduce the pain, along with Interfrential therapy stimulations which would help you to get relieved from the radiating pain. Apply ice for the pain to get subsided immediately. If you cannot go immediately for the physiotherapy treatment. Ice can be kept in the low back where you have back pain. It is suggestible to wear Lumbo sacral belt which would help you to build the abdominal muscle tone which itself would make you feel better. You can also wear MCR chappals which would help you to have less weight falling in the painful back.

Hello Mr. lybrate-user, Sorry to hear this. Fracture at her age may be due to osteoporosis which is a severe deficiency of vitamin D. As far her spinal stenosis is concerned the treatment is based on multiple factors like age, her exact symptoms, findings of clinical examination, other medical conditions etc. Therefore it is difficult to suggest further treatment without all this information. Please see a neurosurgeon or a spine surgeon for a detailed examination. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Best wishes.

My left ankle is pain in 1year, medicine and silicon pad is not effective, now what I do?

Fellowship in Neurological Rehabilitation, BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Gurgaon
Hi, A common cause of ankle pain is a sprain, but a lot of other causes can lead to ankle pain. Consult a orthopedician or physiotherapist to have an accurate diagnosis. Advice: *Do Hot or cold or contrast bath: alternating cold and hot water bath with a ratio of 1: 2 mins (Like 2 min hot and one min cold water). * Avoid standing for long hours and walking bare foot. * Lose weight if you are overweight. •Do stretching of the muscles that support the ankle like calf muscle stretch. *Avoid sports and activities requiring high impact ground landing or stress foot like lawn tennis or basket ball or football specially without proper conditioning. *Make sure that shoes fit you properly. *Work on strengthening, balance and do agility exercises under physiotherapist supervision. Thanks and get well soon!

Start with low-level activity and then gradually increase your activity level, in simple words, do proper warm up before starting your activity. Your muscles are taking time to fire.

Fractures - Is It Possible To Avoid Them?

Fellowship in Knee Replacement, D.N.B. (Orthopaedics) , MBBS
Orthopedist, Mumbai
Fractures - Is It Possible To Avoid Them?

An average person experiences two fractures during his or her lifetime and same holds true for joint related injuries. The severity of this condition depends on a number of factors, ranging from the forces responsible for injury and location to the damage done to the nearby tissues and bones.

How age plays a role in your chances of getting a fracture?

Your risk and severity of developing a fracture, depends, to a certain extent on your age.

A very common occurrence during childhood is crippling joint related injuries, the fractures that you tend to have during this time are generally less complex than the broken bone instances that you stand to experience when you enter adulthood.

With time, your bones become fragile and you become prone to broken bones sustained from falls, which you wouldn't when you were young. Furthermore, as you step into your 50th year, you can get struck by the bone condition osteoporosis, a leading cause of bone fractures during this time. For women, menopause makes them more susceptible to osteoporosis (as infrequent periods and hormonal changes at this time lead to loss of bone mass) and subsequently broken bones.

Preventing crippling joint injuries need many steps in a younger generation known as prehab especially for sporting population and adult population involved in a day to day activities requiring your body getting subjected to physical stress.

Simple steps to get your joints back to normal in case you do get into injuries.

  1. Having a calcium and vitamin d rich diet to strengthen bones
  2. Exercising to strengthen bone and muscle health as well as your balance
  3. Taking relevant medicines to make your bones strong
  4. Going for timely bone mineral density test to determine the health of your bone
  5. Exposing yourself to the sun for about 20 minutes everyday
  6. Having a requisite calcium intake of 1000 mg and 1200 mg for pre- and postmenopausal women respectively
  7. Preventing a fracture by modification in your household furniture, extra clothings, sometimes addition of simple orthotic devices, improving your muscle reaction time etc go in long way to help prevent falls. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Orthopedist.
