Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Do I need it?

MBBS, DGO, MD - Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MRCOG
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Do I need it?

Omega 3 fatty acids during pregnancy. Do I need it?

1) if I take omega 3 fatty acid supplements during pregnancy, it will help my baby's brain development better?

There is not enough evidence that supplements help to boost a baby's brain power. Omega3's in a mom's diet are definitely beneficial though. Taking fish oil capsules does not have same health benefits eating fish as along with omega 3, fish are good sources of proteins, calcium and vitamins b and d which one doesn't get from fish oil capsules.

If at all someone is taking these supplements, it should be taken at the start of a meal to avoid the fishy taste and burps.

2) are there any proven medical benefits of fish oil supplements?

Fish oil have omega 3's in the form of dha and epa. They are good for people who have high triglyceride levels as it helps to lower the triglyceride level in the blood but one must take at least 2-4 g per day to have this effect. How much dha we get out of a particular brand of capsule is not known as fish oil is sold over the counter and is not regulated by drug agencies. Fish oil may also help in controlling diabetes. They may also reduce complications in a person with known heart disease. If you have none of the conditions above it is much better to simply eat fish as and when you want.

Please remember that may also act as blood thinners. People who are on ecosprin, or heparin or any other medication for heart disease should take it only on prescription and be monitored regularly.

3) can I get omega3's from any other source?

While fish is a good source of omega 3's, it is not readily available in many parts of our country. Also vegetarians can get it from walnuts, dark leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, algae oil or flaxseed oils. But vegetarian sources are poor replacements as compared to fish.

Krill oil which is made from shrimps has as much omega 3's as fish oil.

4) how much fish should I eat to get enough omega 3's?

It is recommended to eat one cup fish twice a week and up to 4 cups of cooked fish are safe for consumption. Frequent fish eaters should mind the mercury contained in certain fish. Shrimps, tuna, salmon and catfish are generally low in mercury while mackerel, sharks and swordfish have high mercury content. Pregnant women should definitely try to reduce the mercury content in their diet.

Banana is a great fruit, but doctors do not allow this for patients with diabetes type 2. Why?
Hello, Unfortunately, bananas are made culprits, there is, nothing called 'don't eat'.moderation, portion sizes and timings, matter. Which again depends, on the health condition.

Cholesterol level should be measured at least once every five years in everyone over age 20. The screening test that is usually performed is a blood test called a lipid profile. Experts recommend that men ages 35 and older and women ages 45 and older be more frequently screened for lipid disorders. The lipoprotein profile includes: Total cholesetrol LDL (low-density lipoprotein CHOLESETROL also called "bad"CHOLESTETROL HDL (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, also called "good" cholesterol) TRIGLYCERIDES (fats carried in the BLOOD from the food we eat. Excess calories, alcohol, or sugar in the body are converted into TRIGLYCERIDES and stored in fat cells throughout the body. High triglycerides and cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. Change life style .do meditation, yoga, Go walk daily, do any one physically activity daily i.e.play any game., Avoid fast foods, oily foods, junk foods, alcohol, smoking, fatty foods, non-veg.,avoid stress, take plenty of water in day time. And 1 glass of water before bed at night. use flax oil, omega-3 fatty meal or cap., take .green veg., whole grain. GARLIC,. Cod liver oil. Take anti cholesterol medicines . Cap. Ecosprin gold-10 at night daily. caciral sachet once a week up to 6 weeks.

Mr Sandhu, It is possible that he may be having rheumatoid arthritis. So get his RF(Rheumatoid factor) checked. RF may or may not be positive in Rheumatoid arthritis (RA). If positive and concentration is high then prognosis of the condition is poorer. RA usually affects smaller joints in the beginning. Increased uric acid is usually associated with gouty arthritis. That invariably starts with great toe and very severely painful and red.

Mr. Lybrate-user, if you have diabetes t2, then appropriate drugs are required to control sugar. The drug mentioned by you is not a specific anti diabetic one. It has not been tried in human beings. Only laboratory mice it was tried on with just 67% results which is worse than a placebo. I suggest you shift to proper modern medicines for treatment.

Lybrate-user, if you have hashimoto' s (thyroiditis ht) leading to hypothyroidism, then only treatment is to supplement thyroxine hormone by taking adequate amount daily. Unless hypothyroidism is completely controlled, efforts to reduce weight will not succeeded. Dosage will depend upon body weight and t4 levels. Please understand this is the only remedy available world wide. Thanks.

Mr Priyanshu, With such high sugar levels he should start treatment with Insulin injection and one of the oral antidiabeteic drug. Once sugar levels are brought under proper control then he can be stabilised only on oral drugs. In addition exercise and restricted diet also are to be part of the treatment.

Hi Diabetes control is not just cutting sugar and sweets its reducing carbohydrates and balancing the diet with extra proteins and lots of fibre. Make sure the blood sugars are within normal range. FBS: 80-120 PPBS: 140-180 Prefer citrus foods and papaya for him as the vitamin C and Vitamin A in it will help in faster healing but in small quantities. Daily dressing is important. If there is any infection, culture of the wound has to be done and treated accordingly.

Hi, It is not advisable to stop blood pressure and diabetes medication . You relative's BP and diabetes is under control due to medicines. If they are stopped BP and blood glucose will raise. Very high blood pressure can lead to stroke. High blood glucose can lead to osmotic symptoms and your relative can fall ill. There definitely will be other alternatives to the medicines that he is taking . Ask him to consult a good doctor as soon as possible. Hope this helps you. Thank you

Dear lybrate-user, Since you are are having a renal problem it is inadvisable to take any pain medication 1 First we have to identify the cause of the foot pain and also the site of the pain. Mostly foot pain os die to Plantar fasciitis. 2 You can take a x-ray of the foot to rule out any calcaneal spur or bony problem 3 Do a routine ESR nad Vitamin D3 levels also 4 If it is due to Plantar fasciitis local therapy with ultra sound ,contrast bath and footwear modification can be of help 5 Even local injections can be tried 6 Some centres do a foot scan to assess the cause of pain, pressure points sensitive areas and prescribe footwear accordingly 7 Even reduçong your weight by 2 to 3 kg can relieve the pain if you are overweight.

Hi Madam, Good to see you asking something at the right point of time. But,the data's projected by you seems to be contradictory. For example, the Renal threshold for Glucose is 180mgs/dl. It means, only if the Blood Sugar crosses 180mgs/dl, there will be presence of sugar in Urine, termed Gkycosuria. But,your Random seems to be less than 180mgs/dl and how is it possible for your Urine Sugar to be 2+.Some workup has to be done. A recheck would guide you instead!
