Glycemic Index in Diabetes

The glycemic index is a measure of food containing carbohydrates and how it can raise the level of glucose in blood. This is essentially a process where every food is ranked based on a reference food such as white bread. A food with a high GI value increases the level of glucose in the blood compared to a food with a GI that is medium or low. Some of the common examples of food with a low GI include legumes and dried beans. Fats and meats are not included in the index due to the non-availability of carbohydrate in them.

Some common foods with a GI of 55 or less include bread made up of pumpernickel and whole wheat, muesli, oatmeal, bulgur, barley, pasta, yam, lentils, sweet potato, converted rice, corn, non-starchy fruits, and vegetables. A food set with medium GI in the range of 56 to 69 includes quick oats, basmati rice, pita bread and couscous. Some example of foods with high GI value in the range of 70 includes pineapple, russet potato, white bread, macaroni, puffed rice, corn flakes, rice cakes and melons.

What influences GI?

Since GI has nothing to do with fibre and fat, some general findings of the GI count are as follows:

  1. When a food is processed or cooked, the GI tends to increase

  2. More the storage time of the food, the higher is the GI. It is applicable for ready to cook food and frozen food as well.

  3. The higher is the GI count, more the ripeness of a fruit or vegetable.

  4. Converted food items tend to have a lower GI as compared to the original version of the food

What are the other considerations?

While the GI value gives first-hand knowledge about the type of carbohydrate a person is consuming, it is hard of any help when it comes to the amount of carbohydrate intake. Portion size, therefore, still plays an important role for patients suffering from diabetes. The GI count of a food item greatly varies when combined with a food which has higher GI or lower GI for that matter. Nutritious food that is extremely beneficial for the body, tends to have a higher GI count. For instance, the GI count of oatmeal is greater than that of a chocolate.

Which one is more effective?

While there is no hard and fast rule for maintaining the carbohydrate count, an approach that is equally balanced between a GI count and carbohydrate count works best for a patient. Both the type of carbohydrate as well as the count of carbohydrate plays a crucial role in keeping the blood sugar level under control. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a endocrinologist.

Follow the advice 1. Eat plenty of vegetables 2. Have sufficient fibres in your diet e. G. Salads 3. Cut down on sugar/ sweets 4. Cut down on salty processed foods 5. Cut down on energy dense, processed food - such as crisps, cakes, biscuits and pastries 6. Make at least an hour rigorous physical activity part of your daily life i. E. Jogging/ brisk walking/ running/ gym/ else you like 7. Yoga/ meditation will help you in reducing stress level if you are non-vegies 8. Eat fish regularly 9. Cut down on processed meat but no problem with fresh (unprocessed) meat/ chicken if you are alcoholic/ smoker 10. Cut down on alcohol/ smoking check your blood pressure/ cholesterol level (lipid profile)/ renal function tests regularly. Take medicines regular to keep controlled your blood sugar as advised by your doctor. Remember, not only medicines, all the advices of doctor are precious and very useful. All the best.

Honey And Potato You can prepare another great home remedy for under eye wrinkles by using ½ tsp. of honey and ¼ slice of a raw potato. Mix honey in mashed potatoes to make a paste. Spread this paste on two cotton eye masks and put them on both the eyes, making sure that the masks are also covering the under eye wrinkles. Keep your eyes tightly closed so that the paste should not enter your eyes. After twenty minutes, remove the masks and wash the areas thoroughly with water. Mild wrinkles will almost go away immediately with this remedy. The darker and more stubborn lines will take a few weeks provided you are applying this remedy daily

Two glasses of milk contain around 14 gram of protein while the polyunsaturated fats in almond add those extra calories when included in the everyday diet. Crush a handful of almonds and add it to the boiling milk. Simmer it for five minutes. You can sweeten it with a tsp of sugar. Then, pour it in a glass and sip it slowly. To make it more effective, you may put in dates and dried figs in the boiling milk. Drink it twice daily for two months.

Natural way of weight loss is by routine exercise like walking, running, yoga and healthy diet which contains boiled vegetables, more fiber, low carbohydrate and fatty food. Medicines work temporarily. Skipping meals will not help.

For cold take tablet cetrizine at night and For fever take tablet paracetamol 650 mg and take cp amoxicillin 500 mg 1-1 for five days

1. Chikungunya is a viral fever transmitted by infected female aedes aegypti mosquito. 2. Symptoms are similar to dengue fever with a) abrupt onset of fever, joint pain/swelling b, headache, muscle pain, c) skin rash. D) mostly the symptoms subside within a week e) in some joint pain may persist for months/years if you have fever follow the advice given below 1. Take one tablet of crocin advance sos upto a maximum of three tablets daily after food 2. Cold sponging sos 3. Drink plenty of water 4. Take rest 5. If no relief do blood examination like esr, cbc, widal/ typhidot test, blood for mp/malaria antigen and dengue antigen (ns1) test, urine re/me after consulting physician and follow the advice and treatment.

Sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Spring beds, folding beds or thick matress are harmful use no pillow under the head. Do hot fomantation. Paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days. Caldikind plus 1tab od x10. Do neck, back & general exercises. It may have to be further investigated. You will need other supportive medicines also. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take. If it does not give relief in 4-5days, contact me again. Do not ignore. It could be beginning of a serious problem.

• Do exercise daily in the evening, this will make you tired at night. And since masturbation is often done at night, so when you are exhausted, you will give preference to sleep not to masturbation. • Avoid sitting on your bed. Use a table/chair, and always sit with other people. • When the urge is very intense take a cold shower! It is not only shown to calm the mind but have many other benefits to overall health and energy. • Think about your family or anyone else and if they were watching you. • When you feel the need to masturbate, take a brisk walk or jog. Always try to occupy yourself when the urge arises. • Exercise more and get out of the house. This is a great way to take your mind off everything. • Motivate yourself by reminding yourself that abstaining will increase sexual performance, because if you don't do it as much you will have more energy and be more easily aroused when you have sex with someone, whoever it may be, and also you will have a stronger orgasm since you are less desensitized to the feeling. For optimum hormone levels, keep masturbation to no more than once a week. Studies in men have shown that not masturbating for up to a week slightly increases testosterone, after this it goes back down. • Take your mind off it with (non-sexual) music. • Set tiny goals for yourself, start with going 3 days clean, the third day is the speed bump, get past that and you KNOW that you're committed. Then go a week, then 10 days, then two weeks, then 17 days, etc. • Try fasting. Abstain from food or drink in a few hours everyday can distract your mind from sexual urge. Fasting will also act as a diet from stimulating food or drink for a certain period. If you do it regularly you will have better control upon your urge.
