No. Masturbation does not by itself cause weight loss. First of all get evaluated and investigated, whether you actually are underweight, only then go for any weight increasing treatments

Know Everything About Fibroid

Gynaecologist, Mumbai
Know Everything About Fibroid

Fibroids are the most frequently seen tumors of the female reproductive system. Fibroids, also known as uterine myomas, leiomyomas, or fibromas, are firm, compact tumors that are made of smooth muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue that develop in the uterus. It is estimated that between 20 to 50 percent of women of reproductive age have fibroids, although not all are diagnosed. Some estimates state that only about one-third of these fibroids are large enough to be detected by a doctor during a physical examination.

In more than 99 percent of fibroid cases, the tumors are benign (non-cancerous). These tumors are not associated with cancer and do not increase a woman's risk for uterine cancer. They may range in size, from the size of a pea to the size of a softball or small grapefruit.

Causes: While it is not clearly known what causes fibroids, it is believed that each tumor develops from an aberrant muscle cell in the uterus, which multiplies rapidly because of the influence of estrogen.

Risk Factors:

  • Age: Women who are approaching menopause are at the greatest risk for fibroids because of their long exposure to high levels of estrogen.
  • Obesity
  • Race: African-American heritage also seems to be at an increased risk, although the reasons for this are not clearly understood.
  • Parity: Some studies, of small numbers of women, have indicated that women who have had two liveborn children have one-half the risk of developing uterine fibroids compared to women who have had no children. Scientists are not sure whether having children actually protected women from fibroids or whether fibroids were a factor in infertility in women who had no children.

Symptoms:

Some women who have fibroids have no symptoms, or have only mild symptoms, while other women have more severe, disruptive symptoms. The following are the most common symptoms for uterine fibroids:

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual periods

  • Abnormal bleeding between menstrual periods

  • Pelvic pain (caused as the tumor presses on pelvic organs)

  • Frequent urination

  • Low back pain

  • Pain during intercourse

  • A firm mass, often located near the middle of the pelvis, which can be felt by the doctor on examination

In some cases, the heavy or prolonged menstrual periods, or the abnormal bleeding between periods, can lead to iron-deficiency anemia, which also requires treatment.

Diagnosis: Fibroids are most often found during a routine pelvic examination. This, along with an abdominal examination, may indicate a firm, irregular pelvic mass to the physician. In addition to a complete medical history and physical and pelvic and/or abdominal examination, diagnostic procedures for uterine fibroids may include:

  • Transvaginal ultrasound (also called ultrasonography). An ultrasound test using a small instrument called a transducer, that is placed in the vagina.

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A non-invasive procedure that produces a two-dimensional view of an internal organ or structure.

  • Hysterosalpingography. X-ray examination of the uterus and fallopian tubes that use dye and is often performed to rule out tubal obstruction.

  • Hysteroscopy. Visual examination of the canal of the cervix and the interior of the uterus using a viewing instrument (hysteroscope) inserted through the vagina.

  • Blood test (to check for iron-deficiency anemia if heavy bleeding is caused by the tumor).

Treatment: Since most fibroids stop growing or may even shrink as a woman approaches menopause, the doctor may simply suggest "watchful waiting." With this approach, the doctor monitors the woman's symptoms carefully to ensure that there are no significant changes or developments and that the fibroids are not growing.

In women whose fibroids are large or are causing significant symptoms, treatment may be necessary. Treatment will be determined by the doctor based on:

  • Your overall health and medical history

  • Extent of the disease

  • Your tolerance for specific medications, procedures, or therapies

  • Expectations for the course of the disease

  • Your opinion or preference

  • Your desire for pregnancy

In general, treatment for fibroids may include:

  1. Hysterectomy. Hysterectomies involve the surgical removal of the entire uterus.

  2. Conservative surgical therapy. Conservative surgical therapy uses a procedure called a myomectomy. With this approach, physicians will remove the fibroids, but leave the uterus intact to enable a future pregnancy.

  3. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRH agonists). This approach lowers levels of estrogen and triggers a "medical menopause." Sometimes GnRH agonists are used to shrink the fibroid, making surgical treatment easier.

  4. Anti-hormonal agents. Certain drugs oppose estrogen (such as progestin and Danazol), and appear effective in treating fibroids. Anti-progestins, which block the action of progesterone, are also sometimes used.

  5. Uterine artery embolization. Also called uterine fibroid embolization, uterine artery embolization (UAE) is a newer minimally-invasive (without a large abdominal incision) technique. The arteries supplying blood to the fibroids are identified, then embolized (blocked off). The embolization cuts off the blood supply to the fibroids, thus shrinking them. Health care providers continue to evaluate the long-term implications of this procedure on fertility and regrowth of the fibroid tissue.

  6. Anti-inflammatory painkillers. This type of drug is often effective for women who experience occasional pelvic pain or discomfort.

Hello Dr. My friend mother has diabetes so please tell something. That she cures from these disease.

Hello Dr. My friend mother has diabetes so please tell something. That she cures from these disease.
Diabetes cannot be cured. If managed well enough, it can be curtailed to avoid complications such as kidney failure, amputation, blindness and stroke. Preventing or managing diabetes requires clinical interventions as well as lifestyle changes. Medication is only one small part of managing diabetes. The major changes come from self-care activities. There are five essential self-care behaviours that have good outcomes. 1. Diet – Consume a low-fat, high-fibre diet helps. Eat lot of fruits, vegetables (at least 4-5 helping a day) along with whole meal, cereals and lentils 2. Exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. 3. Medications – Be compliant with the dosages. 4. Testing - Monitoring blood sugar and screening for complications 5. Psychology – Acceptance, coping and problem solving skills

Hye, thanks for the query. Your weight is a balance of calories. Fad diets may promise you that counting carbs or eating a mountain of fruits will make the fats drop. But when it comes to weight loss, it's sensible eating that counts. Weight loss comes down to burning more calories than you take in. You can do that by reducing extra calories from food and beverages, and increasing calories burned through physical activity. Understand that weight /fat loss involves sensible eating. You have to eat the right foods at the right time. Eat small but frequent meals. Take smaller main meals. Take a glass of lime water 10minutes before meals. Avoid long gaps in between meals. Avoid junk as far as possible. Exercise at least 4 times a week. Lastly be committed.                        Remember it's a lifestyle change and not a one time thing.     All the so called fad, crash, restricted diets will only give you muscle and bone loss. The fats will remain as it is. So, don't forget the bottom line: The key to successful weight loss is a commitment to making indefinite changes in your diet and exercise habits.

Hello sir im 28 years old im suffering from social anxiety and often get panic attacks, what should I do.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Hello sir im 28 years old im suffering from social anxiety and often get panic attacks, what should I do.
Do you know if this is a family trait, or is the family by anyways less to socialize, or have you had any problem with fear because of some family or childhood experience? Have you ever been embarrassed in public by someone that it has left an indelible mark in your personality? You can take the answers to these questions to a counselor and resolve the same. Any way you must deal with your fear of people and it will be the best solution to your problem. In the meantime do some confidence building exercises by attending a personality development course, public speaking skills course (I suggest you join the Toastmasters Club), work out at a gym to build good self-image, and join social events to practice your skills. Surprisingly many people are often in the same boat as you, and so you are not alone. The very people you are intimidated by may be afraid of you too!!!! There are three important developments to have to make an autonomous personality: Awareness, intimacy and spontaneity. If you are super aware or too conscious of yourself, it will affect the intimacy and spontaneity. Although your problem is now directly to do with intimacy, you can see that they are all connected. Go and work on these matters with a counselor for this level of social anxiety to disappear from your life for good.

How can I get rid of acne .I have tried aquiplus but it seems no response. Can you help me out of this.
Acne occurs when hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells.  there are some tips which can prevent acne vulgaris - 1- avoid fatty foods like cheese, cold drink, chocolate, sugar, fast food. 2- take green tea 2 time per day. 3- if your face is oily better you should reduce oil from face for that take besan one tablespoon, raw milk one tablespoon and haldi one tablespoon and apply on face, and after 10 min wash with cold water. 4- use oil free face wash. 5- apply green tea on face which prevents excessive oily secretion. 6- use multani mitti one face at night and wash it when it dry. 7- take plenty of water at least 8 glass per day. 8- and don't use aquiplus, use echanacea Q and berberis aquafolium Q with equal quantity and apply on face at night with cotton.
