My grandfather is 79 years old and has been diagnosed with coronary heart disease with multiple blocked arteries. He has been recommended a bypass surgery. To put on record he is also suffering from diabetes. Considering the Age his condition and other ailments is it safe to go for a surgery? What are the other options?

FRCSCTh, FRCS, MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Cardiologist, Bangalore
If this symptoms are controlled on medications and he does not get chest pain or heaviness while carrying out his daily routine activities, he does not need the operation. At his age, bypass operation is purely performed when medications are not helping.

It is most likely bronchial asthma due to allergens in the air. She seems to be allergic to the pollens or dust in port blair. Either she has to move out from there to another city like bangalore or take inhalers regularly to control the symptoms. In any case consultation with a good pulmonologist should help.

It is not unusual in winter months to have long standing cough even after the infection, mostly viral has gone away. However to be on the safer side I would suggest a blood test including cbc and esr, sputum test microscopy and zn stain if you are bringing up phlegm and a chest xray. If these are normal, only symptomatic treatment with a cough syrup will suffice. If tests are abnormal then appropriate treatment has to be given.

Hello based on your blood sugar levels, you don't have diabetes. For kidney function you need to get done blood urea and creatinine levels and ultrasound of abdomen and pelvis. For heart function you need to get ecg and an echo and see a heart specialist.

Hello lybrate-user asak your father does have a very weak heart and bypass surgery is going to be very high risk due to this. If the angiogram shows good target vessels and thallium scan shows good amount of viable myocardium, then surgery is going to be beneficial. Even then you have to realise that it is going to be a high risk surgery.

Hello lybrate-user your blood pressure is better than before but not fully controlled. It is better to get blood urea and creatinine tests done and add another bp tablet like ramipril 5 mg after checking the blood. This will bring blood pressure under better control. Persistent high blood pressure itself will make you tired and can damage other organs like kidneys. Relaxation in any form will help in controlling bp but you still need medicines.

How to cute your lungs? Do dialysis help to cure lungs of a smoker completely? How much dialysis cost?

FRCSCTh, FRCS, MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Cardiologist, Bangalore
Hello dialysis has nothing to do with clearing lungs of a smoker unless the lungs are water logged due to kidney failure. If smoking is stopped at young age itself, the body itself will repair the lungs. No age is too old to give up smoking.
