Normal Delivery Vs C-Section - Which One Should You Prefer?

DGO, MBBS, Advanced Infertility

Normal Delivery Vs C-Section - Which One Should You Prefer?

Normal delivery or vaginal delivery is when childbirth takes place without the use of any vacuum extraction or forceps. It is basically when a woman goes into labour without the use of any other external drugs which induce labour. C-Section or rather caesarean section is basically when a baby is delivered surgically via an incision in the mother’s abdomen. This is usually performed when a normal delivery can put the child’s or the mother’s health at risk. It is also performed when you are expecting twins or rather multiples.

Why Normal Delivery is preferred over C-Section Delivery?

  1. One of the major benefits of having a normal delivery over a C-Section is that the former leads to a shorter hospital stay as there is no major surgery involved. If there is no surgery involved then obviously the risks associated with it, such as, permanent scarring, severe bleeding, septic infection, are completely eliminated.
  2. Reaction to anaesthesia is another thing that one must consider and it is the most crucial difference between a normal and a C-Section delivery. As C-Section is basically a surgery, the mother is administered an anaesthetic to numb the pain. Sometimes, even spinal anaesthesia is used and the side effects of it include: back pain, prolonged numbness or weakness, shortness of breath and in extreme cases, even maternal morbidity (death during pregnancy).
  3. After C-Section delivery, there can be a severe loss of blood leading to hysterectomy (permanent removal of the uterus).
  4. The best reason to avoid a non-planned C-Section is because, once a C-Section has been done then there is a potential risk of having all your future deliveries done via C-Section.
  5. A research has shown that women who deliver via C-Section are less likely to start early breastfeeding as the recovery time from a surgery is pretty high. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist and ask a free question.

5 Rich Vegetarian Sources Of Vitamin B-12

M.Sc. in Dietetics and Food Service Management , Post Graduate Diploma In Computer Application, P.G.Diploma in Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics , B.Sc.Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
5 Rich Vegetarian Sources Of Vitamin B-12

Dairy products

Unlike vegans, vegetarians include dairy products in their diets. These foods are naturally high in vitamin b-12. An 8-ounce glass of milk, for example, provides 0.9 micrograms of vitamin b-12. As the dietary reference intake is 2.4 micrograms, a glass of milk provides 37.5 percent of your daily vitamin b-12. An 8-ounce cup of yogurt provides the same amount, while 1 ounce of cheese contains 0.2 micrograms, or 8.3 percent of your daily vitamin b-12.

Yeasts

Yeast extract spreads are a good vegetarian source of vitamin b-12 and are also suitable for vegans. A 1-tablespoon serving of these spreads -- typically served on toast or crackers -- contains 0.09 micrograms of vitamin b-12, or 3.75 percent of your daily intake. Although most brewer's and nutritional yeasts do not naturally contain vitamin b-12, fortified yeasts are another good source of this vitamin. These products are typically labeled as vegan or vegetarian nutritional yeast flakes. Depending on the brand, adding as little as 2 teaspoons to your breakfast cereal or smoothie or with a spread on toast can provide 100 percent of your daily vitamin b-12 intake.

Eggs

Eggs are naturally high in vitamin b-12. One large chicken egg yolk contains 0.33 micrograms of vitamin b-12, or 13.8 percent of your daily intake. In comparison with chicken's eggs, the eggs of other birds contain much more vitamin b-12. For example, a single duck egg contains 3.78 micrograms of vitamin b-12, while a goose egg contains 7.34 micrograms. As there are no known risks of excessive vitamin b-12 intake, it is safe for you to use duck and goose eggs as a daily b-12 source. You can use duck and goose eggs in place of chicken eggs in most dishes. However, goose eggs are three to four times larger than chicken or duck eggs, so you will need to adjust recipes accordingly.

Fortified foods

Fortified foods are a good vegetarian source of vitamin b-12. These include soy products, dairy alternatives and breakfast cereals. For example, a single veggie burger patty contains 1.41 micrograms and a cup of fortified bran flakes contains 1.5 micrograms of the nutrient. Respectively, these amounts account for 58.8 and 62.5 percent of your daily vitamin b-12 intake. Because not all fortified soy products and breakfast cereals contain vitamin b-12, read nutritional information labels before making a purchase.

1.Low-fat milk is recommended. Boil milk before drinking. Drink it warm. This makes it easier to digest. Do not take milk with a full meal or with sour or salty foods. Add a pinch of turmeric or ginger to the milk before boiling it. This helps to reduce the kapha increasing qualities of the milk. 2. Lighter fruits, such as apples, oranges, grape fruit, pineapple and papaya and pears, are recommended. 3. Sweeteners: Honey is excellent for reducing kapha. Reduce the intake of sugar products, which increase kapha. 4. Beans are recommended. Nuts should be avoided. 5. Grains such as barley, chickpea and millet are recommended. Do not take too much wheat or rice, as they increase kapha. 6. Spices are recommended only in moderate quantities. 7. Vegetables such as potaotoes and sweet potatoes should be avoided as they can cause weight gain. 8. Follow a lifestyle that will not aggravate any dosha. 9. Negative feelings like stress and tension should be avoided. Do not undertake physical or mental work beyond your capacity. 10. Limit the use of contraceptives. 11. Follow an active lifestyle, yet the exercises should be according to one's capacity. Both, excessive fasting and overeating are harmful. 12. Smoking, drinking alcohol and using narcotics aggravates menstrual disorders.

Effects of Sunlight on Sexual Health

Sunlight plays a significant role in enhancing the sex hormones in human blood. Sunlight has a direct impact on brain’s serotonin production, which promotes sexual activity. It aids sexual development, improved fertility, increased arousal, heightened libido, enhanced sensations.

The Sunshine Vitamin (Vitamin D):
About 80% of Vitamin D, a steroid hormone is produced in our skin due to sunlight exposure, the ultraviolet-B (UVB) exposure to be precise. Vitamin D deficiency results in low sex drive in both men and women.

For Men:
Sunlight exposure stimulates man’s libido by enhancing testosterone levels in the body.

For Women:
Vitamin D deficiency causes low estrogen levels in women. A hormone regulated by the photosensitive pineal gland, LH (luteinizing hormone), is responsible for ovulation. Inadequacy of this hormone can hamper fertility. The sun exposure also reduces the level of melatonin hormone which curbs fertility. It’s not surprising that there are higher chances to conceive during summer.

CAUTION:
Too much exposure to the Sun in our climatic conditions can be harmful.

Why does menstruation occur and what could be the reasons for adopting contraceptive method?
Every cycle there are hormonal changes to prepare woman for pregnancy. When pregnancy does not occur, lining of uterus is shed off that is menstruation. Contraceptives are to avoid unwanted pregnancy as pregnancy can occur in any cycle if intercourse happens without contraception.

Looks like she has some hormonal problem due to which she is Not able to produce hormones enough to make the lining of the uteurs. This means she is also not producing an egg (ovum) thats necessary for pregnancy. She needs expert infertility evaluation and you must upload her hormone tests to show the levels. Mostly she will be having PCOD, and may require fertility enhancing medicines to cause ovulation. Do NOT shirk away from medicines. Just making periods by taking a tablet is not good. The treatment must be aimed at making her have ovulation, which will automatically bring her either a period or make her pregnant. DO not do doctor shopping and visit numerous doctors. Find one good one and follow up with that gynecologist for a good 6 months while tests and other treatments are offered to her. If she is overweight, that could be a reason too which may hamper her ovulation and periods. If overweight losing weight is the simplest thing one can do to help oneself.

It seams to me a coincidence for the two to happen together. Missing your periods is a separate issue. As far as bleeding with stool is concerned, it could be due to number of causes but looks like piles in your case. Avoid constipation would help in that case. Take plenty of fluids, fibre and fruits. Additional fibre like ispabagole 3tsf with a glass of water will help. In case it doesn't help, please have yourself examined by a surgeon. Thanks.
