I am 5 years post kidney transplant. Is it harmful to drink alcohol, if so then why? What is the safe limit of alcohol intake after alcohol?

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
The quality of life increases following a successful transplant, patients still have lower survival rates than the general public, with 5-year survival rates of only about 85%, compared with nearly 100% in the general public. One of the leading causes of premature death in kidney transplant patients is cardiovascular disease, and cardiovascular mortality is increased by as much as 4 to 6 times, compared with the general population, after transplantation.Although studies of the general public have shown that moderate alcohol use causes reductions in the risk for cardiovascular disease, the risk for premature death, and the development of diabetes, there seems no reason to advise renal transplant recipients to abstain from alcohol post-transplant. To find if the same were true for stable kidney transplant recipients, Dorien Zelle (University Medical Center Groningen, the Netherlands) and her colleagues studied 600 renal transplant recipients who had their transplant more than one prior and followed them for several years post-transplant. Of these, 288 (48%) were abstainers, 94 (16%) sporadic drinkers, 210 (35%) had moderate alcohol intake, and 8 (1%) were heavy drinkers. Moderate alcohol drinkers were 67% less likely to develop diabetes than other types of drinkers/nondrinkers.During an average follow-up of seven years, moderate alcohol drinkers were 44% less likely to die than other types of drinkers/nondrinkers. It concludes that in contrast with common advice for kidney transplant recipients to refrain from drinking alcohol, drinking moderate amounts of alcohol appears to protect against diabetes and premature death in kidney transplant recipients, similar to the general population. Quality of life in renal transplant recipients is under pressure by many threats, restrictions, and recommendations. There seems no reason to advise renal transplant recipients to abstain from alcohol post-transplant.

Dear , your friend run away sometime and shake hands all time with people. Other people tells your friend is behaving like mad. Forget about black magic. I think your friend has mental trouble. Why don't you take him to a psychiatrist for proper treatment. These problems can be cured fully. Take care.

Diwali Special - Tips To Help You Maintain Your Skin & Health!

Diwali Special - Tips To Help You Maintain Your Skin & Health!

Diwali is a great time for family reunion. Festivities, fun and frolic rule the atmosphere. Amidst all kinds of pujas and other rituals, bursting crackers happens to be an integral part of it. This not only pollutes the atmosphere, but also affects the health of the people. Bursting crackers leads to the release of heavy metals like potassium chlorate, arsenic sulphite, sulphur, aluminium and copper into the air. This results in the deposition of high levels of residual particulate matter or RPM and suspended particulate matter or SPM. These things emanating from the crackers are responsible for allergies. Many problems in the skin may start occurring and may even result in medical hazards.

In order to take care of your skin and avoid any kind of serious allergy or skin problem, follow these steps:

  1. Crackers and fireworks should always be handled with care. They have many chemical components like charcoal, sulphur and potassium nitrate present in them. Also, they have substances which emits bright and colorful light. Those who are vulnerable to allergies such as running nose, skin rashes and itching should not be exposed too much to the crackers as they contain substances which are harsh to the skin. The best way to stay safe is to avoid contact.
  2. One should always wear loose and baggy clothes. In case of skin allergy due to crackers, the situation may worsen if tight clothes are worn. They can further aggravate the rashes. A cool compress or a shower is the best way to get relief from a rash, which is itching or burning like fire. Then it has to be patted dry and moisturized.
  3. Colloidal oatmeal or oatmeal powder, when mixed with water can bring great relief for inflammation. But lukewarm water should be used for better results. Anti-itch cream like hydrocortisone or calamine lotion should always be kept handy.
  4. In case the symptoms are too severe, and a doctor is not available immediately damp dressing is the best solution. A soft cotton piece of cloth should be soaked in water. It should be then wrung out and used to cover the affected area or the whole body.

All the above-mentioned methods are good ways to take care of skin allergies during Diwali. However, there might be some skin problems which do not go on their own. In those cases, the help of a doctor is the ultimate solution. Consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Here are some treatments and symptoms of PCOS

Symptoms and Treatments for PCOS
Hi! I’m Dr. Chhavi Bansal and I’m practicing Homeopathy at Homeosure-Home of Homeopathy and Wellness, Pitampura.
I’ll be discussing about Polycystic Ovarian Disease today.

Polycystic Ovarian Disease has become the single most common hormonal imbalance of the reproductive age group and has become the major cause of infertility in this age group.
It roughly affects every one in five women of reproductive age group. PCOD is commonly known as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome which means a group of symptoms which categorize PCOD.
The symptoms can be – most importantly, it is weight gain especially round or middle, acne or oily skin, hirsutism (development of hair on face), thinning of scalp hair or loss of scalp hair, infrequent menstruation cycle and subfertility.

How is PCOD diagnosed?
According to Rotterdam criteria, two of the following three diagnostic criteria should be present in a patient to diagnose her as suffering from PCOD. These diagnostic criteria includes –
Firstly, presence of signs and symptoms in a patient or elevation of male hormones in the blood test.
Secondly, infrequent or no ovulation.
Thirdly, presence of polycystic ovaries in an ultrasound.

In an ultrasound, development of more than 10 follicles ranging from 2 to 9 millimeters in diameter or ovarian volume more than 10 cubic centimeters signifies the presence of polycystic ovaries.
Now, coming to the management of Polycystic Ovarian Disease. Apart from medicinal interventions, weight loss have shown remarkable changes in the ovarian functions and in almost 30 percent of the cases, no other medicinal intervention was required if the patient maintains her weight. But it is also being found that in 50 percent of females suffering with PCOD are not overweight so there is one more factor to PCOD that is higher level of blood glucose.

So, if a patient manages to lose her weight and control her blood glucose, it will definitely help her maintain and manage her PCOD in a very well way.
Harms of PCOD - In a long run a patient suffering from PCOD can develop a lot many complications, like a patient can develop metabolic syndrome, she can have high levels of triglyceride and cholesterol , she can develop diabetes mellitus and she can develop high BP as well.

Apart from these, PCOD has been the major cause of infertility these days so it leads to subfertility in most of the females.
Coming to the dietary management of the PCOD. It has been found that people who take more of omega-3 fatty acids in fruits and vegetables, they stimulate their synthesis of sex hormone binding globulin which helps you prevent and maintain your PCOD.

Other dietary advises include cutting down alcohol, caffeine intake, quitting smoking, decrease intake of saturated fats, cutting down your trans fats and cutting down your artificial sweeteners intake.
Now, coming to the Homeopathic management of PCOD, the root cause of PCOD lies in the hormonal imbalance or hormonal dysfunctioning of the body and so, from this root cause, it is easily perceived that this constitutional disease requires constitutional treatment.
Homeopathy has treated thousands of cases of PCOD and has brought stability in the menstrual cycles of lot many females in the shortest possible time.

If you have any other query related to Polycystic Ovarian Disease, feel free to consult me through Lybrate.

Kegel Exercises - How Beneficial They are in Pregnancy?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
Kegel Exercises - How Beneficial They are in Pregnancy?

Kegel is named after renowned gynaecologist Arnold Kegel. Kegel exercises are for the strengthening the pelvic floor muscles. You must continue doing Kegel exercises multiple times for several days, to begin to see changes and benefits.

Benefits
1. It is a highly recommended treatment for urinary incontinence
2. Works well in case of decreased bladder control
3. Strengthens pelvic muscles
4. Relieves abdominal cramps
5. Helps in pelvic toning
6. Prevents organ prolapse
7. Beneficial to those with constipation as kegel exercises help regulate bowel movements

Kegel exercises during pregnancy
During pregnancy, most women suffer from problems related to constipation, which can be kept in check by regular practice of kegel exercises. The strengthening of pelvic muscles is of utmost need during this time, as weakened muscles can lead to a major prolapse if they are unable to bear the weight of a baby. Strong pelvic muscles are required to have a healthy pregnancy. These exercises are useful in preparing the muscles for labour and childbirth. If you notice occasional leakage of urine during the third trimester, it is a warning sign of losing bladder control, which, if left untreated, can worsen during the post partum period. Regularly exercising can help prevent complications occurring due to pregnancy.

How To Do Kegel Exercise During Pregnancy?

Try to stop the flow of urine when you are sitting on the toilet without tightening your abdominal, buttock, or thigh muscles. When you're able to successfully start and stop urinating, or you feel the vaginal muscle contract, you are using your pelvic floor muscle, the muscle you should be contracting during Kegel exercises.

You can do Kegel exercises two ways: either by holding or quickly contracting the pelvic floor muscle. To do slow Kegels, contract the pelvic floor muscle and hold for three to 10 seconds. Then relax and repeat up to 10 times. To do fast Kegels, quickly contract and relax your pelvic floor muscle 25 to 50 times. Relax for 5 seconds and repeat the set up to four times.

Squatting: Squatting is helpful during labor because it opens the pelvic outlet an extra quarter to half inch, allowing more room for the baby to descend. But squatting is tiring, so you should practice it frequently during pregnancy to strengthen the muscles needed.

How to do Squatting? An exercise called a wall slide is especially helpful. Stand with your back straight against a wall, place your feet shoulder width apart and about six inches from the wall, and keep your arms relaxed at your sides. Slowly and gently slide down the wall to a squatting position (keeping your back straight) until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Hold the position for five to 10 seconds, slowly slide back to a standing position. Repeat five or 10 times.

Pelvic Tilt: What is it? Pelvic tilts strengthen abdominal muscles, help relieve backache during pregnancy and labor, and ease delivery. This exercise can also improve the flexibility of your back, and ward off back pain.

How to do Pelvic Tilt? You can do pelvic tilts in various positions, but down on your hands and knees is the easiest way to learn it. Get comfortabe on your hands and knees, keeping your head in line with your back. Pull in your stomach and arch your back upward. Hold this position for several seconds. Then relax your stomach and back, keeping your back flat and not allowing your stomach to sag. Repeat this exercise three to five times. Gradually work your way up to 10 repetitions.

These exercises can yield great benefits with minimal effort. The exercises require no special equipment except comfortable clothes, and a little space to do them.

Do not worry if you are not close to the goal when you begin. Pelvic muscles are like any other muscles in your body. They will become stonger only with time, consistency and mindful work.

Beware: If you sense any pain in your back or abdomen after doing a Kegel set, it is a sign of you not doing them properly. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist and ask a free question.

My periods are not regular. There is always a gap of 2-3 months. I checked for thyroid but its normal. What should I do?

Diploma in Gastroenterology, Diploma In Pulmonary Medicine , MSCP, BHMS, SVD( skin and veneral diseases)
Homeopath, Hyderabad
My periods are not regular. There is always a gap of 2-3 months. I checked for thyroid but its normal. What should I do?
It depends on the underlying cause of the irregular periods - if you are a teen irregular cycles are normal, but if you are an adult with irregular periods talk to your doctor about investigating the cause and different treatment options. You can also help regulate your hormones yourself by staying healthy, using herbal treatments like chaste tree or evening primrose oil, or use lunaception to regulate ovulation. Hormonal birth control like the pill does not regulate periods - it does completely the opposite as the pill works by suppressing the menstrual cycles so you no longer ovulate and thus you no longer menstruate - the bleeding women get while on the pill is withdrawal bleeding caused by the drop in synthetic hormones when going from active to inactive pills. Once you come off the pill your periods can be irregular for up to a year, and as the original cause of the irregular periods was not dealt with this problem may return again so leaving you with irregular periods for even longer. Consult a homeopath and get treated he will restore your periods and also you will not have any sideeffects either.
