I am using thyroxine since 10 yes after my delivery. Are there any possibilities for me to get pregnant.

I am using thyroxine since 10 yes after my delivery. Are there any possibilities for me to get pregnant.
Thyroxine does not interfere with being pregnant. Only caution is - thyroid profile should be within normal range during pregnancy to avoid fatal and maternal consequences. So more frequent testing and thyroxine titration required.

Mr. Lybrate-user, diabetes mellitus is a disease due to either insulin deficiency or resistance to its actio or both, particularly if it is t2 dm. In t1 dm there is no insulin at all. Treatment of diabetes depends on the type of the disease. Another important thing to be remembered is that treatment will continue for life time. There is no cure for the disease. I could not follow your query on" elctronic media" to be attached to the body, there is nothing of that sort at least for now. She will need proper treatment with appropriate drugs, diet control and regular exercise and weight control.

Diabetes can occur during pregnancy called as gestational diabetes. There is no way that diabetes can come to you from your husband. If at all it is transferred from your parents to you. If diabetes is confirmed then it is necessary to control the sugar urgently by taking insulin injections only. Blood sugar should be maintained between 90 to 120 mg. This is necessary for proper development of fetus and positive outcome of pregnancy.

Hi Insulin pump would be ideal for brittle diabetes. Those who can't afford, can manage with insulin and proper diet which mostly is small frequent meals with a little knowledge about carbohydrate count which will be of much help in insulin dose adjustment. You need continuous blood glucose monitoring for few days to understand your dips and surges in blood sugar which inturn is very useful in adjusting your insulin dosage. De-stressing also plays an important role. Avoid alcohol, make sure insulin needle is changed after every fourth prick (if it's a flex pen) and is taken properly. Stay fit and strong, as fitness level rises, diabetes risk reduces.

My mother having an thyroid problem which type of treatment should take for it and what to does or what to not in this case.

MS - ENT,MBBS

Hi  First : medicines are mandatory.  Otherwise you might have weight gain, muscle ache, sleep and anxiety issues as well as reproductive  and cardiac issues later. You need to get an USG neck done  and an FNAC USG guided of thyroid gland. FT3/FT4/TSH  If you have already done these tests Share on lybrate I can help you better. Any history of alcohol  intake /fatty food /sugary food How much exercise do you get done every day? Ideally you should be doing a good mix of cardio ,weights and crossfit  exercises to keep you healthy Together  with a balanced diet with optimum  healthy fat protein and carbs.  Avoid  deep fried fatty food and fast food. No soft drinks /sugary drinks. I am outlining  food you should avoid or restrict in Hypothyroidism. It's important  you maintain  your body weight exercise regularly.Weight gain increases thyroid hormone requirements.  Avoid cruciferous   group of veggies  like cabbage and broccoli. Avoid soya bean in all forms. No soya ,nugget, chunk, tofu or milk. Limit their intake: Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, turnips, and bok choy. Cooking the vegetables can reduce the effect that cruciferous vegetables have on the thyroid gland. Limiting your intake to 5 ounces a day appears to have no adverse effect on thyroid function. Decrease gluten  intake from processed  food. Always try whole grain varieties of cereals which is rich in fibres and help improve  bowels (Take your thyroid replacement  medicine several hours before or several hours after food rich in fibres .Otherwise problem  with absorption  of hormone. 20 to 35 gram of fibres daily from all sources. Avoid excessive fatty (deep fried)and sugary food as hypothyroidism  causes your metabolism  to slow down &weight gain. Avoid highly salted food, chips, pickles, sauces as they contain  large amount of sodium .Hypothyroidism  puts you at risk of high BP and excess sodium in salt aggravates Coffee  in excess. And coffee with thyroid hormone  replacement  can prevent absorption.  Alcohol. It is toxic to thyroid gland and prevents  hormone production and absorption. The problems of hypothyroidism  gets better with medicines, diet and exercise.  You will start  better as the levels of your hormone normalises.  Initially  you need to do the TSH test every 6 weeks till normal TSH then every 3 months Diet /EXERCISE/Medicines/Sleep/meditation :5 pillars of health needed to live the healthiest Hope this helps Let me know.  Take care Dr.Amrita Basu

Dear lybrate user, protein is one of the most vital nutritional substances which are required for human body. Almost every high protein diet contains purine. This purine produces uric acid on oxidation. Excess uric acid is accumulated at the joints of human beings as urate salts. This accumulation of urate salts lead to pain & swelling of those affected joints & this condition is clinically known as gout. You should avoid high protein rich diet like mutton, chicken, beef, eggs, sea fish, spinach, garden pea, tomato, lentils etc. Also you need to take homoeopathic mother tincture urtica urens q, 30 drops, thrice daily, after meals, in a cup of water. This medicine will help to dissolve the accumulated excess urate salts from the joints.

Dear lybrate user with the limited amount of information provided it appears that you are concerned about your father's diabetes. It could had been better had you provided us with last prescription, latest fasting sugars, hba1c levels and any other recent relevant investigations along with the complete medication list. For the successful treatment of diabetes it is advised if he can start exercising on a regular basis preferably 30-45 minutes, diet modifications with low carbohydrate and high fibre diet along with medications as advised. Hope that solves your query. Anything more then please feel free to revert.

Mr wasim khan, looking at your weight and height, your bmi is 22.87 kg/m2 which is just normal. It is really excellent to have this kind of weight and height. I do not see any reason why one should think of increasing the weight. If your diabetes is under check, then this weight is fine. Please mention your fasting, pp levels and hba1c%, so that I may be able to guide.

I am a upsc aspirant and tends to spend an average 12-15 hours everyday with books. However somewhere I have realized that it has been detrimental as far as my health is concerned. I suffered from hypothyroidism for past 1 year however the levels are dropped down to 2 while being on medications. Apart from this, I still tend to feel a kind of fatigue, weariness, courtesy of which I even suffer inconsistent sleep cycles. There have been times when despite of sleeping for a healthy 8 hour time, I still feel tired all through. I've even gained a substantial 8.5 kgs in last 1.5 years. Kindly suggest a balanced diet alongside some multivitamin tablets, which may play a helping hand in my hitherto condition.

Hypothyroidism brings together constellation of metabolic disturbances in the body such as anemia & neuresthinia, apart from thisother features such as psychosomatic changes akin mild depression, weight gain ,low drive, fatiguability ,weariness, palpitation, pain and tiredness in body and legs, nightly cramp like pains in legs, constipation, peripheral neuropathy etc, my opinion holds that there are no dietary changes which may be of actual help, in some cases alkaline diet consisting of high omega fatty acids and other antioxidants may help, this largely comprises of walnuts ,almonds, flax seed, ample ater intake & rationing tea /coffee/ alcohal or tobacco intake, certain blood tests such as CBC, serum iron studies, LFT, pp/fasting blood sugar levels & lipids levels will give physician hint to your overall health, sometimes optimum control on TSH levels achieved through regular dosages of thyronorm or eltroxin for more than 6 months to 12 months will further alleviate some of the symptomatic irregularities which you have mentioned, thus maintain patience with sustained treatment, get test done, take dietary changes as advised and if required get in touch with a qualified doctor .hope this was useful. Good luck.

How can I cure permanently diabetes mellitus from my body blood glucose level and the blood acidity. Is there any risk of heart attack for obesity, how can I get rid of this?

Mr. Lybrate-user, diabetes mellitus can only be controlled by appropriate medicines, proper diet (restricted diet) and regular exercise. If blood sugar is not kept in control (fasting closer to 100 mg, pp 150 to 160 mg and hba1c% <6.8.), then there is a definite possibility of serious long term complications in relation to eyes (retina), kidney, lower limbs, peripheral nerves and heart. Yes there is an increased risk of heart attacks in uncontrolled diabetes patients. Another important thing our blood ph is in the range of 7.33 to 7.45 which is slightly alkaline. Our blood always remains in this range. There no blood acidity.

What's the treatment for diabetic neuropathy in the lower limbs. Is there a way to reverse diabetic neuropathy.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
What's the treatment for diabetic neuropathy in the lower limbs. Is there a way to reverse diabetic neuropathy.
Mr Amod, Diabetic neuropathy occurring in lower limbs can not be reversed, as damage to the nerve endings due hyperglycaemia is permanent. But further deterioration can be prevented by strict blood sugar control, and symptoms of neuropathy can be relieved by using certain drugs. It will be better if you give details like current fasting and PP sugar levels, HbA1c% and drugs being taken with dosage and come in a private conversation then i can give specific suggestions.

Dear lybrate user, high sugar levels are definately a cause for you to worry about your mother. Stress can be major contributing factor for high sugar levels. It appears to me that your mother is emotional kind of person. She may not sharing her feelings with anyone. But that causes tension. She needs an outlet to express her emotions. I would suggest you to take her to a counsellor who will help her to relieve of her intense feelings. Once her tension is released then she will be able to think rationally and will have lesser stress.

I am suffering with thyroid . Pls save from this disease. What I have to do. Which type of medicine I have to take.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. Lybrate-user, hypothyroidism is a hormone deficiency disorder, where the thyroid gland does not produce adequate amount of thyroxine. Thyroxine is is required for day to day development and functioning of brain, plus it is involved in multiple metabolic reactions of the body. So it has to be supplemented daily. Hence, thyroxine tablets have to be taken daily, dose will depend upon body weight, tsh and t4 levels. Treatment is for lifetime. Otherwise there can be serious consequences. Along with thyroxine you will also have to exercise daily for about 1 hour or more, take a balanced diet. Thanks.

Yes, there are oral steroids that can be given to outpatients. Also, she can be put on Insulin at home. Hospital admission for starting steroids & Insulin alone, is unnecessary.
