Sex During Pregnancy - 5 Things You Must Know!

Sex During Pregnancy - 5 Things You Must Know!

Making love during pregnancy is a safe bet and can be carried on till one’s water breaks. Studies in the past have shown that a normal pregnancy is not related to infections and miscarriages. It has also been established that sex during pregnancy is not related to premature birth. On the contrary, a good sex life during pregnancy helps to reduce mood swings and keeps a woman healthy and cheerful. Here are five facts that you should know about sex during pregnancy:

  1. Does sex harm the baby? The womb is protected by the thick muscles of the uterus and the amniotic sac. Furthermore, the cervix is safeguarded by the mucus plug. These ensure that the baby doesn’t get hurt while making love. In the midst of an orgasm, if you get a feeling that the baby is moving, it happens primarily because of the heart pounding faster. This being said, you might have to skip sex in the following cases:
    • You have placenta praevia
    • You start bleeding
    • Your water breaks
    • You suffer from cramps and pain in the abdomen
    • Your partner is suffering from genital herpes
  2. How does sex feel during pregnancy? While an increased flow of blood in the pelvic region heightens the lovemaking experience for many, some complain that it leaves them with a bad feeling. There is yet another segment of women who complaints of a less powerful orgasm during pregnancy. At times pregnant women might feel pain if the penetration is deep. Even abdominal cramps are not uncommon during this condition. To sum up, the feeling of sex greatly varies from individual to individual.
  3. Is a complete lack of sex normal during pregnancy? Yes, it is absolutely normal. Many women suffer from nausea and tiredness during the first three months of pregnancy, limiting their urge for sex. At times pregnancy hormones become responsible for the libido. But, mostly it is the state of mind of an individual that becomes a barrier. Women suffering from relationship issues are the ones who suffer from a lack of sex.
  4. Does your husband’s libido suffer too? It is not uncommon, to say the least. Some of the common apprehension that a male partner suffers from include the following:
    • Fear of hurting the wife
    • Apprehension about the baby’s health
    • The consciousness of making love in the child’s presence
    • Apprehensions about upcoming parenthood
  5. Is there any risk involved in oral sex? Absolutely none, oral sex is considered to be one of the safest of sex options during pregnancy. If the fear of hurting the wife looms large, it is the best way to express one’s love. However, it should be ensured that your husband does not blow air in the vagina. This might lead to blood vessel blockage. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Sexologist.

Hi doctor. I am 19 years old female. My periods have always been normal until I missed in the month of April. My last period was on 11 march 2016. I had a lot of exam stress so I attributed it to the same. However I did an ultrasound which did not show any abnormality in my ovaries whatsoever. Then on 4 june 2016 I took tab estrogen and progesterone and got my period on 10 june 2016. I again missed my cycle in july and went for a hormonal profile which showed that my LH waz 26.47 and FsH 7.07 and PRl 28.09. My endocrinologist said you have PCOS although I do not have any other symptom other than a bit of weight gain. He started me on metformin 500 mg and gave diving 10 for 7 days to induce periods which I did not get even after waiting for 15 days. So today I went to an ob/gyn and he said to increase metformin to 1 g and take krimson 35 for a month or two and check. I am really worried. Is this a very big issue? Will it affect my fertility in any way? Web makes PCOS look like something very evil. Please help.

MISS EVEN IF YOU HAVE PCOD THAT MEANS THAT YOU ARE NOT OVULATING REGULARY AND HENCE YOU R MISSING PERIODS. THERE IS NO POINT IN TAKING METFORMIN OR ANY OTHER DRUGS. PCOS IS NOT A DISEASE BUT A CHANGE THAT HAS HAPPENED BECAUSE OF DERANGED LIFESTYLE. YOU DONT NEED TREATMENT IS BECAUSE YOU HAVE INCIDENTLY FOUND THAT AND RIGHTLY AS YOU SAY YOU DONT HAVE ANY SYMPTOMS. EVEN IF YOU TAKE TABLETS YOUR PERIODS WOULD COME REGULARLY TILL YOU ARE ON TABLETS AND ONCE YOU STOP THEM THE PERIODS WOULD RETURN BACK TO THE ORIGINAL STATE. I WOULD ADVICE NOT TO GET BOTHERED BY THE PERIODS. IF YOU DOINT HAVE THEM FOR 2 TO 3 MONTHS THEN YOU CAN TAKE TABLETS. WHATEVER TREATMENT I GIVE IS AFTER MARRIAGE

My wife had 1 time miscarriage done on march now we dont want baby for 3-4 months. Kindly please suggest pills for the same.

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Hi I appreciate your decision as it will give time to your wife to come to norms, both physically & mentally. 3-4 months is a short duration so best is to choose condom and second option is birth control pill. For pill, try tab. Triqullar, 1 tab. Daily, for 21 days, starting from 5th day of cycle. She must take folic acid tab daily also.
