Social Anxiety - 10 Tips To Help You Overcome!

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Solapur
Social Anxiety - 10 Tips To Help You Overcome!

Social anxiety disorder or social anxiety phobia is characterised by an extreme and often, unrealistic fear of social situations and scenarios. A patient suffering from this condition will usually be ridden with self-confidence and a sense of intense nervousness, as if he or she is being constantly watched and scrutinised. It may be caused by biological, psychological or environmental factors. Let us find out ten ways to getting over the same.

  1. CBT: CBT or cognitive behavioural therapy is a form of talk therapy that allows a patient to speak with a psychologist or psychiatrist, so as to find out the root cause of the condition. This form of theory helps in arriving at ways of overcoming the feelings of nervousness in social situations.
  2. Practice going out with smaller groups: It is said that sticking to small and intimate groups can help in overcoming the hesitation and self-esteem issues that many of these patients feel. Once they are comfortable, they can take on larger groups.
  3. Medication: Antidepressants and beta blockers are sometimes prescribed along with other kinds of medication, for patients who are unable to control their intense anxiety in social situations.
  4. Face the fear: A little introspection will help you arrive at the reason or root cause of your anxiety. This can help in facing the fears and tackling them. You can talk about these fears with someone.
  5. Unhelpful thinking: Tackle unhelpful thinking where you imagine people are looking at you in a certain way because they must be judging you. Tell yourself over and over until you believe that it is not true.
  6. Focus on yourself: The key is to focus on yourself instead of getting hooked on to what others may be thinking about you. This will help in banishing the negative thoughts.
  7. Be in the present: Practice deep breathing or meditation to bring yourself back to the present every time you begin to think about what people may be thinking about you when you are in a social scenario.
  8. Lifestyle changes: Drinking less and not smoking at all can also help in the better production of hormones that will help in balanced thinking, especially in anxiety-ridden situations.
  9. Group therapy: Much like CBT, group therapy gives you space and platform to voice your fears and anxiety. The advantage of this kind of therapy is that you can also hear the stories and fears of other people, which will give you some point of reference when it comes to overcoming your own fears.
  10. Communication skills: You can go to a counsellor or get soft skills training for better communication skills, which will help you improve your social interactions. This, in turn, will give you much confidence to deal with the world outside. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.

It shows your home environment it is not good or you may feel alone in home. You are happy in social aspects. But you are unable to maintain loneliness. Please check any problems in home environment. Please rectify if possible. If not. Then leave it. Spend most of the time in office. After go to spend with other friends. Go home for sleeping, bathing and fresh purpose. Some one some problems whether it is home or office. In your case office is best. Then enjoy. Do not think about home. If everything is fine in home. Then analyse yourself. You can find out the truth. Then rectify or leave it. Enjoy where you feel happy. Do not think other aspects. Ok best wishes.

Dear lybrate user. You are 17. Most probably you must have experienced a voice change from your earlier years. I see this as a transition stage. Horse voice is common during transition stage. I suggest you continuously sing many movie songs and it will clear your throat and voice problems. Don't worry. Take care.

Issues in a Marriage

The institution of marriage is a herculean task; little does it rest on the sanctified rituals and other vows of commitment. Tying of the knot is perhaps symbolic of the several ups and downs a couple faces together. Marriage is challenging precisely because of the myriad problems it entails. What makes a marriage successful is how two loving individuals face and combat each of these issues.

Let us take a look at the common marital issues:

  1. Money could grab a place between partners: Monetary problems can come in the way of happy living. Monetary constraints can make partners bicker as they lead to severe tension. If making both ends meet is a constant worry or if one individual earns way less than the other, friction in the marriage is but expected.
  2. Relatives and in- laws could irk your bond: Officious relatives, in- laws and other apparent well- wishers can do loads to spoil your marriage. They tend to create differences between husband and wife. There are times when they convey lies between the couple. Their unnecessary curiosity can also dampen your bond.
  3. Domestic responsibilities could also be the issue: Husbands and wives may have arguments and serious fights over issues related to the household; cleaning, washing, buying grocery can trigger disputes within the family. Housework should, therefore, be shared and done by both the partners.
  4. Decisions with regard to rear up children are often problematic: Married couples can behave in bizarre ways when it comes to taking decisions on behalf of their children. A difference in opinion in decision- making can make partners review their choice of one another. They may even doubt their child's secure future in the hands of their partner.
  5. Irregular sex can be a threat to emotional intimacy: Marriage endows a couple with so many duties that they may fail to make love that frequently. Lack of sexual intercourse can create marital problems.

Dear Rishabh, Alcohol and nicotine addiction also comes under abuse and addiction. If you’re ready to stop the substance and willing to get the support you need, you can recover from addiction and abuse —no matter how bad the addiction or how powerless you feel. The first step in treating addiction is accepting that you have a problem. Confronting an addiction and accepting responsibility for your actions isn’t easy. But it’s a necessary step on the road to treatment and recovery. You should then consult a psychiatrist / psychologist who fill follow this treatment. 1. Detoxification using medicines. 2. Behavior modification with the help of therapies. 3. Counseling. 4. Medication to sustain and 5. Long term support. These given steps are essential for any addict to get effectively rid of addiction. Therefore, you need to stick to the treatment plan and cooperate with your psychiatrist / psychologist. Take care.

This is not a mental disturbance. This is only because of your environmental disturbance. Environment around like your home or your work place etc. Become very disturb so because of this you are stressed that's why you forgot. Just relax change your environment. Do meditation and i'm sure you feel good. Take care.

I'm in depression. Reason is nothing but why it is happening with me since 7 days. Please help.
Depression is an illness like other illnesses. It can happen to any body, even physically strong and mentally robust persons may have depression. There may not be any reason, and it may occur without any reason also. Do you have other features of depression, like:- 1. Do you enjoy the pleasurable things like watching favourite tv serial or music as you used to enjoy earlier? 2. Do you like talking to others or you prefer to be alone now a days? 3. Do you feel sad most of the time and think negative about future? 4. Do you have enough sound sleep, do you feel fresh at morning? 5. Do you ever think yourself guilty of whatever wrong happened to you? 6. Do you feel yourself devoid of energy always? 7. Do you have lost concentration in job/ confidence in self? if more than 03 of the above answer are in yes in your case then you appears to be stressed and depressed. Adopt a healthy lifestyle with good diet, enough rest and recreation, adequate socialization and sleep. I suggest you to consult a psychiatrist who may assess you in detail and help you with some medicines and psychotherapy.

I think that you are having panic attacks with palpitations. You are overacting to the fear of rejection. This may have come from actually being rejected at sometime early in your life, and as well as too much authority exercised over you at home. There is normal fear for everyone about public speaking and some to interviews. But to have this level of reaction is because of poor self-image and self-esteem. One immediate thing you can do is to place your index finger on your closed lips and blow into your cheeks to build back pressure into your throat. You are to hold this for 10 seconds and within that time your heart will slow down to a lower level and make you calm immediately. You can repeat this every time you experience these panic attacks. It will help tremendously to meet with a counselor and deal with all your fears and reactions to that emotion with healthy responses. In the meantime please do vigorous exercise of the aerobic kind for the heart? s fitness; meditation for the brain? s fitness; sleep for a well rested mind and body; and a diet with lots of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.
