Sir. I hv stress and Negative thinkings always comes suddenly in my mind. For every thing. please help me or any tips to avoid this type of thinking.

Masters in Clinical Psychology
Psychologist, Lucknow
Hi lybrate-user, Negative thinking can be a habit of mind. Thoughts sink in and linger there until you take action to get rid of them. When you first start thinking negatively, it can be tempting to try and force those thoughts out of your head. You try as hard as possible to stop thinking about them and push them out. But this approach often backfires. Resisting those negative thoughts can actually reinforce that thinking pattern and just make things worse. The more you try not to think about something, the more you actually end up thinking about it. To get rid of negative thinking, you need to try a different approach – something that will clear your mind of those negative thoughts once and for all. Here are seven ways to clear your mind of negative thinking. 1. Change your body language Take a moment to observe your body language. Are you slouching with a closed stance? Are you frowning? If you are, you’re more likely to think negatively. Bad body language can lower your self-image and lead to a lack of confidence. In that emotional state, it’s only natural to start having bad thoughts. Sit up straight in a confident manner. Open your stance and smile more. Fix your body language and you’ll feel a lot better. It might be just what you need to clear those negative thoughts. 2. Talk it out Sometimes negative thinking occurs because you have issues or emotions you need to get out. It’s not good to keep things to yourself. If you have something that needs to be addressed, you should talk through them with someone. Putting things into words gives your thoughts shape and form. That can help you put things into perspective so you can deal with them at the root of the problem. 3. Spend one minute calming your mind of all thought When your mind is running a mile a minute, it can be hard to keep up. With everything racing around your head, it can be hard to control the thoughts going on inside – especially the negative ones. Slow things down. One minute of calming is often all it takes. It’s kind of like meditation – you’re emptying your mind. Think of it as a reboot. Once it’s empty, you can fill it with something a little more positive. 4. Change the tone of your thoughts Sometimes negative thinking is the result of poor perspective. Take a look at the point of view you take on the things going on around you. For example, instead of thinking, “I’m going through a difficult time and I’m having trouble,” think “I’m facing some challenges, but I’m working on finding solutions.” You’re basically saying the same thing, except the second way has a more positive spin to it. But sometimes that little tonal shift can make a huge difference to your thinking patterns. 5. Be creative When negative thoughts come, it can pay to spend some time creatively. Find a creative outlet for your thoughts. Write things out. Draw or paintsomething – even if you have to use a crayon. As long as you’re using your creativity to get your negativity out, it can work. Exploring your emotions through creativity acts like auto-therapy and can elevate your mood. Creativity can feel like a release. When you put your emotions through an art form, you get them out of your system and clear them out. 6. Take a walk Because thoughts arise in the mind, it’s easy to assume that’s where they’re formed. Well, that’s only partly true. Sometimes our thoughts are a product of our environment. For example, if you surrounded yourself with negative people and negative imagery, you’d probably start to think negatively in turn. Stepping away from a negative environment can help immensely. Take a walk alone away from your usual atmosphere. Head somewhere uplifting like a park or museum. Time spent distancing yourself from those negative influences can bring you great peace of mind. 7. Start listing out what you’re grateful for Have you forgotten all the good things you have going for you? Sometimes in the daily grind, we lose focus on all the ways things that are going right in our lives. If that’s you, then you need to re-train your mind to focus on all the good happening around you instead of the bad. List off everything you’re grateful for no matter how small they seem to be. Don’t take anything for granted anymore. Sometimes the good things in our lives are right in front of our faces and we still fail to see them. Stop being blind to the positive things you already have going for you. Consult for therapy/counseling.

Respected doctors, My results of isc class 12 exams were declared in which I managed to score only 82.5%. My parents expected me to get at least 90% as in class 10 I got 94.8% and was class topper but this time I totally failed to live upto expectations. My friends have performed very well. I am very frustrated and thought of committing suicide but realized that it is impossible for me to do so. My mother started behaving strangely. She stopped talking to me for my failure. She is under the impression that I have wasted my life and that theres nothing left. I try to remain positive but when I see my parents faces and their dejected mood, I feel like running away from everything. I am now sitting in the corner of my room lamenting about my mistakes and have no one to share my pain and sorrow with. Its really amazing how people desert you in times of despair. I do not know someday I may turn insane. After the results I have not been able to eat and sleep properly. U r my only hope please help me!

Hi do not worry if you have scored 82.5 %. There are nowadays lots of fields where you can excel. If you score a little less it ios not the end of everything. Have hopes and join the field of your choice and excel in that. Do not neglect your food. You have to eat to live. Do not ever think of committing suicide. Only the people who fear life and cannot face commit suicide. Be bold tell your parents I will excel in my field of choice. Try to think positively. Get up early in the morning and sit silently for 10 minutes without thinking about anything. Then go and relax with your best friend. No medicine is required for you. Ok do not worry.

Hi sir am male 24yrs my problem is I cannot perform eye contact with opposite person even my members also especially in front of women's my eyes goes sexual parts of opposite women at the time she do you listening or not I feel shame how can I overcome this bad habit thank you sir.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

Obviously, this conveys to the female your line of focus, and it is really very embarrassing. You probably have a very narrow view of women and I do not know where you picked up that trait. You are objectifying women and seeing only their carnal side. At some time this obsession with their sexual endowments will drive you into an impulsive act and get you into serious trouble. My advice to you is to get a sex education from some competent counselor and understand that women are more than their sexual value. Apart from that they have so many more interesting sides to them that makes life very exciting and interesting. Sex has so many dimensions to it too: physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual. These need to be understood in their true measure and it will surprise you that minus those dimensions you are looking at a telescopic view of a wonderful being made for man! when talking to anyone (and more so to girls), it is very important to make eye contact. Such a person can be trusted to be open and honest, and they will appreciate your confidence in your straight forward look. Girls will be attracted to such people and will want to trust you. With your current behavior, you will only drive them away, and this frustration may lead you to become a person who imposes himself on them reluctantly. Then the very thing that you desire so much will become near impossible to attain and elusive.

Dear , the duty of your mind is to think. You cannot control your mind's thinking. But certainly you can divert your thinking. You can make your mind to be always positive by engaging in creative activities, hobbies, games and passionate towards whatever you do. Thereby you can reduce your stress and tension also. Once you can do this, loss of proper sleep and stress also can be made normal. I can help you with this. Take care.

Because of communication with your partner you may get depressed. Naturally you are very cool person. But you are unable adjust with your partner even though she is very good. Better to communicate with her. Better to express your inner feelings with her. Then your mind is relaxed there is no chance of depressed. Communication will develop so many problems. Do not feel alone. Express your loving nature with your partner. Ok best wishes.

Sir I smoke weed joint only on weekend is it will harm me or I can continue with it? I studied on internet dat smoking weed is not harmful as compare to others?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
The problems with addictive substances like weed is that over time your tolerance for it will develop and you will need more of he substance to get the same effect. So there is no guarantee that you can stick with this control. Not much is known about its entertainment value or benefits. There is a lot of hype by those who want to legitimize it and those who love it: there is a bias because of their selfish motives. The antagonists on the other hand willfully propagate the dangers, sometimes without substantiated reasons to dissuade its use. If you know it is harmful why would you want to play with it. The obsession and compulsive use is when you become addicted to the substance. Now we all spoke the same language: we can stop whenever we want, it is not addictive, it is fun after all, there are so many medical benefits etc. All meant to justify the consumption. There are so many other healthy ways to be creative or to stimulate the creativity in you; and there are so many ways to ‘open’ your mind. Why choose the easy way out when it is a chemical way out? Just for your information here’s what WebMD has to say: ‘No matter how it gets into your system, it affects almost every organ in your body, and your nervous system and immune system, too. When you smoke pot, your body absorbs THC right away. (If you eat a baked good or another item, it may take much longer for your body to absorb THC, because it has to break down in your stomach before it enters your bloodstream). You may notice changes in your body right after you smoke. The effects usually stop after 3 or 4 hours. Smoking pot can increase your heart rate by as much as two times for up to 3 hours. That’s why some people have a heart attack right after they use marijuana. It can increase bleeding, lower blood pressure, and affect your blood sugar, too. We don’t yet know if marijuana is linked to higher odds of getting lung cancer. But the process does irritate your lungs -- which is why regular pot smokers are more likely to have an ongoing cough and to have lung-related health problems like chest colds and lung infections. Other physical effects of marijuana include: • Dizziness • Shallow breathing • Red eyes and dilated pupils • Dry mouth • Increased appetite • Slowed reaction time (If you drive after using marijuana, your risk of being in a car accident more than doubles.) If you’re a long-time user, you can have physical withdrawal symptoms -- like cravings, irritability, sleeplessness, and less appetite -- when you stop.’ It being a hallucinogen, it can lead to hallucinations and even a phenomenon called ‘cross hallucinations’ i.e. for example, you can see sounds and hear colors!!! Please discontinue soon and live healthily until the scientific world comes up with concrete benefits, if an, about smoking weed.

Recently my friend is passed away. So I'm mentally affect them I'm not normal now. What I do?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
The loss of a friend is very difficult to take especially if s/he was a young person. This loss will make you feel sad and you must express this feeling to someone who will lend a listening ear. If you have to weep, please go ahead and do so. Crying is very cathartic to grief. All the thoughts, experiences, good times, the shared moments etc. need to be spoken about and this process may take some time but will be very useful to dealing with this loss. A visit to the family and expressing your condolences and sharing your relationships with the person will be beneficial too. Do not wallow in the misery but make it an expressive and sincere experience. Of course in all this the idea is to move the emotion out of your system, and finish with the grieving. You must realize that eventually you must move on and show more importance to the living and those left behind who also need to complete the process. Attend whatever rituals, memorials, prayer meetings, and ceremonies that are held as a method of finishing with the process of grieving. Once these are all done you must focus on life and move on. The vacuum s/he has left behind must be duly filled by another person after some time and you must feel like you have done adequate justice to his/her memory. You yourself must get back to life with a vigor and into routines that are useful to your well being. You can then carry fond memories and live in peace with that.

Hello, i'm 30 years old male & i'm suffering from daily drinking. What should I do?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You must quit it before anything dangerous happens to you and your family. It does not matter when you feel like drinking, as long as you need your drink. This could lead to increased tolerance levels so that over time you will need to drink more to get the same or greater effect. You need to identify why you need to drink, and go back into your childhood to find out other influences on your personality that makes you prone to addiction. Meet with an addiction counselor and work with them to sort out this drive. Your already display the classic tendency to first obsess about it and then compulsively feel driven to meet that need. The simplest thing to do is to do some other interesting activity during the evening times. Meet your oral need with some other non-intoxicating drink like soups, juices, and sodas with lime, etc. If you think that you will find it very difficult, then admit yourself to a hospital and go for de-addiction: which normally lasts for about two weeks. Then follow that up with addiction counseling from a professional for at least three years to completely get rid of the habit. If this is also not enough, then admit yourself into a de-addiction center and stay there for at least 6 months and after that attend counseling with a professional. There are medicines that help with the drinking just to ease the initial craving. Ultimately, it is your will power and the support that you receive from the medical fraternity and your close and dear ones. You must also learn to substitute and deal with the oral need, a rigid value system, the script issue, and of course look at all the genetic factors to plan a strategy not to get into what is called ‘cross addictions’ i.e. another form of addiction that may appear alright but is in fact as bad as the primary addiction. The center or hospital and the counselor will advise and guide you on several measures and precautions you will need to take to stay with your resolve. Even after the rehabilitation you must attend AA meetings and continue this support for a long time. Your family will also need to attend some sessions and go for Al-anon meetings for their co-dependency issues. You cannot be treated in isolation because the family has gotten used to your drinking and have made some unhealthy adaptations to somehow cope. Make a serious plan with the family and whoever else’s support you can get and act on it fast. As a combination these two therapies (counseling and rehabilitation) will aid in dealing with the addiction. It will however take a long time to completely come off of the enslavement.
