Dear , When you get distracting thoughts, please do not fight them. Simply let them pass. When you fight the distracting thoughts and feeling, you are actually energising them. When you get time you can learn vipassana meditation. Or some of the wonderful online meditation techniques which are easy to learn and easy to practice.

I am smoking 6-7 cigarette everyday. How should I control this habit. I tried several time to quit but nothing seems to be change with me. Please suggest me to do some test to know my health issue due to smoke.

Fellow Observership, Certificate in Forensic Psychology, MD-Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Akola
Hello, smoking is one of the easiest & one of the most difficult habits to break because 1. Quitting cigarettes does not cause any immediate harm 2. Cigarettes are so easily available that one does succumbs into temptation of smoking just 1 more before stopping altogether. Regarding your question, easy way is decide a quit date 1 week from now & reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke to half from today. Secondly, you can purchase nicotex/quitsure park & suck type nicotine chewing gums to take care of your cigarette craving & substitute them for cigarettes. In addition, there are medications which help to reduce craving & get rid of smoking addiction. If you need them, get back to me after 1 week for next plan of action. Good luck.

I sometimes I feel I am in depression, do people in depression gain weight? how to get out of depression ?
Generally in anxiety and depression people may gain weight initially due to two reasons, first one due to over eating and second due to hormonal imbalance. You may need continuous counselling for few days with some herbal treatment.

Bipolar Disorder - can anyone tell me what is the most effective and least amount of side effects?

BHARAT JYOTI, MRACGP, INCEPTOR, MD-PhD, MD - Psychiatry, FIPS, Fellow of Academy of General Education (FAGE), DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition. It runs an unpredictable course of ups and downs. When left untreated, these ups and downs can be devastating. The recurring manic and depressive episodes that characterize the disease make it difficult to lead a stable, productive life. In the manic phase, you may be hyperactive and irresponsible. In the depressive phase, it may be difficult to do anything at all. Early diagnosis and treatment can help you avoid these problems. Successful treatment of bipolar disorder depends on a combination of factors. Medication alone is not enough. In order to get the most out of treatment, it's important to educate yourself about the illness, communicate with your doctors and therapists, have a strong support system, make healthy lifestyle choices, and stick to your treatment plan. Recovering from bipolar disorder doesn?t happen overnight. As with the mood swings of bipolar disorder, treatment has its own ups and downs. Finding the right treatments takes time and setbacks happen. But with careful management and a commitment to getting better, you can get your symptoms under control and live fully.

Dear , amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant. It affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced. Amitriptyline is used to treat symptoms of depression. I am sure the medicine was prescribed by a psychiatrist because your mother needed such a treatment. The medicine is not harmful for her. Work with your psychiatrist for proper care and cure. No self judgement. Take care.

Something is obviously not right with him and he needs help immediately. Take him to a counselor and if that person advises him to meet a doctor have him meet him too. Some people go blank when they are very angry and they have a temporary blackout at that time. So he may need anger management classes apart from some medical intervention.

I am not sure who got you hooked onto sleeping pills. On a longer run they will shrink your brain, resulting in early onset dementia, personality changes, memory changes, even withdrawal seizures. Kindly consult a psychiatrist, get your sleep evaluated, and he will gradually wane you off the sleeping pills and give pills which promote sleep by acting on the cause of sleep disturbance, he may also educate you on sleep hyigiene.

Dear lybrate-user, please introspect. There are many occasion in our life, we often go away from what is being happening around us. Those occasion are very few and we need to realize that. If you try to generalize that, then it could be a problem. You will be able to take decisions when you have experience in those aspects. Confusion in selecting the profession is because you are still going behind salary and not with your passion. I can understand your problems but you need to provide me more examples. You may consult a psychologist for detailed analysis. Take care.

I have been through depression and the doctor has prescribed medicines like respiridone 2 mg, 3mg , clonzepam 1mg , flutop 15 mg , mirtazapine 15mg , olanzapine 10 mg - 4 tablets combination for about 8 months - and on second appointment with nimhans i slowly stopped taking the pills and not taking any pill right now, but i still have some side effects like my stomach bloats up and still have sleep issues, for minor depression as forced to take a hell a lot of tablets, do you suggest any tablets to overcome the side effects of these tablets, i was told the toxins will remain in the gut for about 8 to 10 months. If so how do i detoxify my body, i guess i have put on good weight and not able to bring down my weight and i used to eat a lot and sleep a lot when i was on tablets, how do i retain my normal life back with no stomach bloating and proper sleep- improper sleep is causing acidity and finally leading to stomach problems and again that is not causing proper sleep so just want to know how to get rid of these side effects?

Hypnotherapist, DCS, BSIC, Advanced Trainee of Transactional Analysis, Advanced Skills in Counselling
Psychologist,
That's a lot of medications. and they come with numerous side effects too. In my experience, alternative medicine like homeopathy and ayurveda work beautifully and without any side effects. This will also take care of the bloating. Counselling will help you to look at the causes of depression and help you develop skills to be more confident and motivated. If you want then we can have a session as I am in Bangalore.

Hello, welcome to lybrate., from the above account of yours regarding your friend, it seems like he might be harbouring a psychotic illness. Talking to one self, seeing things not seen by others are suggestive that he might be having hallucinations. Most common causes for psychosis at this age group are: schizophrenia, seizure disorder, substance use disorder. It would be better that get him evaluated by a psychiatrist as soon as possible and start with the treatment, in order to get an early recovery and to prevent long term morbidity and mortality which is quite high in non-treated cases. If you can to know more, want to seek a private consultation for your friend and want to begin the management as well, you can consult.

Morning sex is good for the brain

Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (B.U.M.S)

Morning sex is good for the brain

Morning sex is good for the brain

Just several minutes of morning sex can keep you looking younger and improve your mood for the rest of the day.

Sex, on its own, comes with a few benefits but did you know that having sex first thing in the morning is capable of improving your mental abilities?

Men accumulate testosterone as they as they sleep and from the time they wake up, they have a three-hour window when they are brimming with testosterone.

That early morning erection is not called 'morning wood' or 'morning glory' for nothing. Whatever it is called, having an erection on waking up is as good a reason as any to initiate a little morning sex.

Not only is it a great way to kick start your day because it'll leave you feeling lively and energised, a great love-making session will also alert your brain nerves making you mentally alert after you have spent up to eight hours asleep.

Another great perk is that morning sex is a really good way to connect with your partner before the day begins.

Studies also back this up, with a recent one saying, 'adults who start their day with sex are more likely to be happier and healthier than those who start their day with a cup of coffee and breakfast.'

So dump the coffee and hump your boo
