Operations done to remove the refractive error (power) of the eyes are known as refractive surgery. There are certain basic criteria that most patients need to fulfill before they can safely undergo refractive surgery. To enumerate, they are: (1) stability of refraction: the power of the eyes should have become stable for a period of 1.5 years minimum without any change. (2) curvature of the cornea should be tested by a technique which is known as topography. (3) thickness of the cornea should be measured by a test known as pachymetry. The minimum thickness required is 550 microns. (4) dilated retina evaluation: this is one of the most important tests that should be performed by a trained retina specialist. This test helps in detection of any offensive lesion on the central or peripheral retina. In case of any retinal abnormality, these should be treated before undergoing the surgery for number reduction. (5) there should be no pre-existent corneal abnormality. (example: corneal scar, opacity, defect, etc.) another important suggestion is that whenever you go for the assessment (the above mentioned tests), you should discontinue the use of contact lenses at least 4 weeks prior to the assessment. The reason for this being that use of contact lens temporarily alters the contour of the cornea. It takes around 3-4 weeks for the restoration of the original corneal contour after removal of the contact lens. Another important point is that you, as a patient, should be compliant to put post operative medication in your eyes for at least 2 months. There is bound to be some discomfort, watering, foreign body sensation, pain after the surgery in most cases-you should be ready to tolerate that. A leave from work for 7-10 days after the surgery should be generally sufficient. Take care, regards.

I have red eyes for about 7 weeks. What should I do? How can I recover from it? My eyes are totally red. What is the treatment?

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)

I have red eyes for about 7 weeks. What should I do? How can I recover from it? My eyes are totally red. What is the ...
Eyes appear red because the vessels at the surface of the white portion of the eye (sclera) become swollen. Vessels may swell due to: • Eye dryness • Too much sun exposure • Dust or other particles in the eye • Allergies • Infection • Injury Eye infections or inflammation can cause redness as well as possible itching, discharge, pain, or vision problems. These may be due to: • Blepharitis: Swelling along the edge of the eyelid. • Conjunctivitis: Swelling or infection of the clear tissue that lines the eyelids and covers the surface of the eye (the conjunctiva). This is often referred to as "pink eye." • Corneal ulcers: Sores on the cornea most often caused by a serious bacterial or viral infection. • Uveitis: Inflammation of the uvea, which includes the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. The cause is most often not known. It may be related to an autoimmune disorder, infection, or exposure to toxins. The type of uveitis that causes the worst red eye is called iritis, in which only the iris is inflamed. Other potential causes of eye redness include: • Colds or allergies . • Acute glaucoma: A sudden increase in eye pressure that is extremely painful and causes serious visual problems. This is a medical emergency. The more common form of glaucoma is chronic and gradual. • Corneal scratches: Injuries caused by sand, dust, or overuse of contact lenses. Sometimes, a bright red spot, called a subconjunctival hemorrhage, will appear on the white of the eye. This often happens after straining or coughing, which causes a broken blood vessel on the surface of the eye. Most often, there is no pain and your vision is normal. It is almost never a serious problem. Because the blood leaks into the conjunctiva, which is clear, you cannot wipe or rinse the blood away. Like a bruise, the red spot will go away within a week or two. So,visit a local eyespecialist. The diagnosis of your problem in eyes can only be made by local examination of eyes

My eyes get strained whenever I start studying for long tome. And I am using eye lens even then the problem not solved so could you please suggest me some tips to follow up daily so that my eyes can recover soon as possible. And tell whether I should use lens or not?

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)

My eyes get strained whenever I start studying for long tome. And I am using eye lens even then the problem not solve...
Eye strain, or asthenopia, is when the eyes get tired from excessive or intense use. It can be annoying, but it tends to disappear with rest. Although it’s not often a serious condition, eye strain could be a symptom of an underlying problem. Eye strain is known to cause fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and headaches Eye strain may lead to other problems, such as: • Headaches • Difficulty Concentrating • Irritability • Burning Sensation • Watery Eyes • Dry Eyes • Photophobia • Eye Pain HomeTreatment for Eye Strain The first thing you can do is change your environment and work habits. By doing this you can relieve the pain without spending money on treatment. If you work on the computer, try taking more eye breaks by looking down the hall or out the window, or by closing your eyes for thirty seconds. You should get your eyes checked at least once a year, especially as you grow older. Routine eye exams give you the opportunity to discuss with your Eye Specialist any issues you may be having, and they may enable you to catch any problems in their early stages. If you spend a lot of time reading, you may need prescription glasses solely for those activities.

Try frequent voluntary blinking, resting (closing) your eyes for short breaks during work, drinking plenty of water, using lubricant eye drops, etc. Better still, get checked up by an ophthalmologist and get proper advice.

I am decided to wear braces for teeth but my dentist want to remove two upper teeth and two lower teeth But my friends saying that by removing teeth it effects your eye. Is it true it causes any effect on eye, it effects any another body part or it causes any effect on future?

I am decided to wear braces for teeth but my dentist want to remove two upper teeth and two lower teeth
But my friend...
Dear lybrate-user, for better alignment of teeth, we need to create some space in the jaw towards which the teeth will move over the course of treatment. If you go ahead without extraction, the existing teeth in your jaw will become crowded and overlap one another due to lack of space. Hence, such extractions are necessary during most orthodontic treatments (braces). Also, unlike what was traditionally believed, these extractions do not adversely affect your eyesight or any other part of your body. These notions are totally mythical and have no scientific basis. Please go ahead.

Weak eyesight /squint /stress/ acidity / migraine are some common causes of headache. It is advised to go for eye check up to diagnose eye problem. Do meditation/ relaxing activity to reduce stress level. You can take tab. Paracetamol 500 after meals (only if you are not allergic to the drug) for symptomatic relief. But if headache persist for longer time/ very severe/ associated with other symptoms like fever, nausea, vomiting, chakker etc. Then investigation may be needed. Consult some good physicin/ neurologist in your area.
