I am having cough since last 2 week what are the precaution that I have to take and what test should I go for?

DNB(Respiratory Diseases), MBBS
Pulmonologist, Jabalpur
You should get yourself checked up for the cause of cough. There are multiple reasons for cough occurring for 2 weeks, but its always good to know the reason. The precautions you may take is you may use a mask or handkerchief over face and nose when you cough specially in public, so that your infection does not spread to others. You may take steam inhalations to relief cough a bit, avoid taking cold water and going in cold air as they may increase your coughing.

I am a 23 year old guy. I recently had a master health checkup done. Everything was ok except for a fact that my chest xray indicated that I had prominent left hilum. The doctor who I consulted that there is nothing to worry in 99% of the cases but I should be careful and take a CT scan done. Is it necessary or should I go for an MRI? Do I need to worry? P.S I have had asthma and weezing as a child and I had primary complex twice in my childhood. I have been smoking for the last 4 years.

FCCP (USA), MD - Pulmonary Medicine
Pulmonologist, Indore
CT has a adverse effect of radiation hazard. So benefit must be weighed for the risk. Every radiological finding must be correlated clinically. Get your previous xray compared with the present one. For chest CT is the best. MRI has few indications especially if vertebrae related lesion or neural lesion has to be seen. Best wishes

I have mantoux test sputum test both are ...
Hello, mantoux test is not worth doing now. Sputum for afb may not be positive always, for sputum test to be positive there should be at least 10 to the power 4 organisms to get detected. So we need to go along with ct scan. If you are from metropolitan city you can try to get gene expert test on sputum which is more sensitive than microscopy and gives result in 2 hrs. Other is sputum culture and sputum culture for tuberculosis. Sputum for gram stain we need to give antibiotics and see for response.

I have been using Budecort and Asthalin Inhalers for more than 20 years for My Asthma, Now the Doctor has stopped these and prescribed Montelukast Sodium Tablets, I have Dry skin in my face and swelling of lips after I take Montelukast, Is it Ok or should I revert back to Inhalers

MRCP (UK), DNB, MD
Pulmonologist, Mumbai
Dear World over the treatment for asthma is inhalers. Also if. Your asthma has been controlled well for 20 yrs with stable lung function, you must continue inhalers. However it is advisable to seek a chest physician opinion with latest spirometry. You can contact me in private clinic. Regards

If it is just for once then it may not be a serious issue... Sometimes because of forceful coughing and sneezing causes tear of mucosa... That causes blood ..

I have cough from past one month, I have taken the medicine BT not well till now. What to do now.

MBBS
General Physician, Cuttack
1. Do a complete blood examination like cbc, esr, mantoux test, x ray chest, sputum examination for afb (3 samples) 2. Consult chest physician with report. 3 do warm saline gurgling 3-4 times daily 4. Avoid smoking if you smoke 5. If all the test reports are normal, it could be due to allergy. Do an allergy test after consulting allergist/immunologist and follow the advice and treatment.

I am suffering with allergic bronchytis asthama from on my 10th year now my age is 20 how can I get rid of this please help me.

Certified Diabetes Educator, Registered Dietitian (RD), PGDD, Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (B.U.M.S), General Physician
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
do you have family history of asthama? the right medications for you depend on a number of things, including your age, your symptoms, your breathing triggers and what seems to work best to keep your breathlessness under control. Preventive, long-term control medications reduce the inflammation in your airways that leads to symptoms. Quick-relief inhalers (bronchodilators) quickly open swollen airways that are limiting breathing. In some cases, allergy medications are necessary. Do reply back for medication prescriptions. Being also a general physician and registered dietitian, I prescribe both evidence based herbal as well as allopathic medicines complementing with dietary guidelines and home remedies carefully personalized for each individual patient.

I have been an overweight kid all through my life as I suffered from Bone TB in my childhood and the medicine made me fat. However, in attempt to lose weight I consulted a friend who advised me to take OPTISULIN a table a day in order for to lose weight before I go for my walks in the evening. I am confused now as I am not suffering from diabetes or high or low blood pressure. However, I have my father and mother both suffering from the same diseases. I am 28 years old, height is 5ft 11 inches and weight is 125kgs. Please advice if I can take this medicine or not as he told me it is completely safe and will not give me any side effects.

Hello! 1st thing you need to do is take advice of a qualified dietitian. Only a qualified expert can help to solve any of our problem without any complication. And medication or pills for weight reduction is not at all a good solution for any one. One might lose weight for that particular period but once stop pills again weight gain n many complication can take place. So I must advice go for small n frequent healthy meals with some activity n visit a dietitian. It will help.
