Erectile Dysfunction - Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention

Erectile Dysfunction - Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention

Erectile dysfunction can be quite a depressing and stressful problem. It can jeopardize the sexual life of a person. In recent times, the problem has been on an exponential rise. As per a survey, 1 in every 1000 men suffers from erectile dysfunction. To top it, some men, out of embarrassment, delay the treatment and medications.

In Erectile Dysfunction, a person is unable to maintain an erection necessary for a sexual intercourse. A man's confidence and self-esteem often take a beating in such cases. In some cases, the affected person completely detaches himself from the outside world. The erectile dysfunction in men can be due to lifestyle habits, psychological problems, injury, and diseases, such as;

  1. Stress and anxiety.
  2. Hormonal imbalance.
  3. Medical conditions, which include, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertension.
  4. Treatment for prostate cancer can result in erectile dysfunction.
  5. Obesity.
  6. Older men are more likely (not always) to suffer from erectile dysfunction.
  7. Unhealthy lifestyle habits (drinking, smoking, and drug abuse).
  8. Peyronie's disease.
  9. Parkinson's disease.
  10. Injury to the pelvic area.

Symptoms of erectile dysfunction:
A person with erectile dysfunction may exhibit one or more of the following symptoms:

  1. A person with erectile dysfunction may have difficulties in getting an erection.
  2. There is a problem in holding on to the erection for a longer duration of time.
  3. Erectile dysfunction can also affect a person's sexual desire (low libido).

Diagnosis and Treatment:
As serious as it may appear, there is nothing to press the panic button. The problem is temporary. With timely diagnosis and treatment, erectile dysfunction can be easily managed and treated. Diagnosis of erectile dysfunction include;

  1. Blood and urine tests play a pivotal in identifying the root cause (diabetes, cardiac problems, hormonal imbalance or any other medical conditions) of the erectile dysfunction.
  2. Physical examination.
  3. An Ultrasound.

Treatment:

  1. Medications like Stendra (Avanafil), Viagra (Sildenafil), and Cialis (Tadalafil) can prove to be helpful in treating erectile dysfunction. The medications magnify the influence of nitric oxide (nitric oxide helps in relaxing the penis), thus enabling a person to get an erection on being sexually aroused.
  2. Low levels of the testosterone hormone interfere with and adversely affects erectile dysfunction. In such cases, the doctor may recommend testosterone replacement.
  3. Alprostadil Injection when injected helps in increased blood flow to the penis (by muscular relaxation of the penis), thus helping a person to get an erection.
  4. Penile implants are also helpful in case of erectile dysfunction.
  5. Many men with erectile dysfunction have benefitted immensely from counseling and sex therapy.

A person also needs to

  1. Maintain a healthy lifestyle.
  2. Exercise regularly.
  3. Indulge in limited alcohol consumption and smoking.
  4. Refrain from drug abuse.
  5. Maintain a healthy body weight.
  6. Seek expert help in case of severe depression, stress, and anxiety.
  7. Do not compromise with your sleep.
  8. If need be, discuss the problem with your partner. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Sexologist.

Loss of libido is a common problem affecting up to one in five men – and even more women – at some point in their life. It's often linked to professional and personal stress, or important life-changing events such as pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding. However, an unexpected loss of libido – especially when it lasts for a long time or keeps returning – can also indicate an underlying personal, medical or lifestyle problem, which can be upsetting to both partners in a relationship. Relationship problems are among the most common causes of loss of libido. For help and advice, you may find it useful to contact the relationship support charity Another thing to consider is whether the problem is a performance issue that makes sex difficult or unfulfilling. For example, many men experience ejaculation problems or erectile dysfunction, and women can experience painful sex or vaginismus (when the muscles around the vagina tighten involuntarily before penetration). Consult privately for medical management with no side effects.

Premature ejaculation, usually within a minute, to be more precise 30-60 sec max.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Premature ejaculation, usually within a minute, to be more precise 30-60 sec max.
Premature ejaculation is uncontrolled ejaculation either before or shortly after sexual penetration or foreplay. It happens with minimal sexual stimulation and before the person wishes. It may result in unsatisfactory sex for both partners. This can increase the anxiety that may add to the problem. It is one of the most common forms of male sexual dysfunction. It has probably affected every man at some point in his life. Most cases of premature ejaculation do not have a clear cause. With sexual experience and age, men often learn to delay orgasm. Psychological factors such as anxiety, guilt, or depression can also cause it. In some cases, it may be related to a medical cause such as hormonal problems, injury, or a side effect of certain medicines. Consult a psychiatrist online or in person Your doctor will discuss your medical and sexual history with you. He or she will do a thorough physical exam. Your doctor may want to talk to your partner also. Premature ejaculation can have many causes. So your doctor may order lab tests to rule out any other medical problem. In many cases premature ejaculation gets better on its own over time. Treatment may not be needed. Practicing relaxation techniques or using distraction methods may help you delay ejaculation. Your doctor may recommend that you and your partner practice certain techniques to help delay ejaculation, as well as medications are there to help. All the best There are excellent medications for PE, but you need to answer few questions on general health as well as PE for any psychiatrist to prescribe. Consult anyone in person or online if you wish. All the best.

DEAR Lybrate USER. This problem is due to irritation and inadequate nutrition of the brain. So follow few basic things …. 1) take solid diet two times in a day and liquid diet two times in a day. 2) drink only 100-150 ml of lukewarm water during meals …. 3) don’t drink water one hour before meals and one hour after meal…4) avoid oily, spicy, salty, junk, fast, fermented and stale foods…. 5) avoid late night sleeping habits …. 6) do anuloma viloma pranayam regularly early in the morning. A) eat 5 gm of ajwain seeds along with 5 gm of jaggery after meals. B) take 60 ml of trifala juice along with 20 ml of honey early in the morning and at night before sleep. Do all these things for 15 days. It gives you good result. Consult to me for further suggestions. Thanks. IDEAL time of sleep is 10 pm to 4 am.

Dear Mr. lybrate-user, I have noted above but can't understand whether fasting or PP blood sugar is 170. If fasting is 170 then need to come in my clinic at Patna (Chhapan bhog, east boring canal road) so that I can guide in details. If PP is 170 then it's ok.
