Oats - Why you should eat them

Net Qualified In Community Health And Social Medicine, M.Sc - Dietetics and Community Nutrition
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Durgapur
Oats - Why you should eat them

Oats though seemingly dull, accompanied by a bowlful of milk can form a very nutritious meal. It is packed with fiber which is very essential to regulate your digestive system. Oats are low in calories and help you maintain your waistline. Here are a few reasons why you should add oats to your regular diet-

1. Oats fill you up - Oats are packed with fiber which keeps you full for a while. A bowlful of cooked oats contains only about 150 calories and yet it manages to stave off your hunger because of its high fiber content. The absorption and digestion process slows down when you eat oats thereby restricting your appetite and calorie intake. Oats keep you full for a longer time than other calorie-rich meal and delays the hunger pangs.

2. Oats help reduce cholesterol - According to studies, people suffering from high blood cholesterol could reduce their cholesterol levels by consuming 3 grams of soluble fiber every day. Oats contain the highest amount of soluble fiber among all whole grains (4 grams per cup). The gel-like soluble fiber transits the intestinal tract and aids in trapping substances which contribute to the rise in blood cholesterol level.

3. Oats are diabetes-friendly - Oatmeal is a perfect substitute for meals high in sugar and saturated fat. It helps to control the level of glucose in your bloodstream and also delivers your daily need of fiber. People suffering from uncontrolled diabetes can abundantly benefit from consuming oats although it is essential to keep in mind that you should not add sugary toppings or any other synthetic ingredients to your oats so that it retains all the nutrients which are already present in it.

There are many ways in which you can make your oats interesting. You can go beyond your breakfast cereal and bake cookies made of oats. You can also sprinkle them on your pancakes and bread or add them to your smoothie to increase your fiber intake. You can also add fruits like bananas or berries to your bowl of oats and make it tastier according to your liking.

All About Cochlear Implants

MBBS, MS - ENT ( Gold Medalist Honors )
ENT Specialist, Gurgaon
All About Cochlear Implants

A cochlear implant is beneficial if you are deaf or have difficulties in hearing. Cochlear implants are not hearing aids which just raise the volume of the different sounds you hear; they are surgically implanted inside your head. The implant transmits impulses straight to the auditory nerves which send the signals to the brain.

Cochlear implants can help you with sounds such as telephones, alarms or doorbells ringing. You can even understand speech or listen to music again with the help of cochlear implants.

How Cochlear Implants Work?

Cochlear implants are for adults and children with sensorineural (hearing loss caused by damage to the inner ear) hearing loss.

The device consists of two parts:

  • The receiver-stimulator: this part is surgically implanted under the skin.

  • The speech processor: this part is placed externally, behind the ear.

The receiver-stimulator is placed first, and two weeks after the procedure, the speech-processor is installed. If there are sounds around you, the microphone on the speech processor will pick them up and transform them into electrical impulses. The receiver-stimulator receives these impulses through the electrodes inside them. The electrodes then send the electrical impulses to stimulate the auditory nerves, and ultimately, the sounds picked up will reach the brain.

Advantages Of Cochlear Implants-

Some advantages of cochlear implants include:

  1. Being able to hear at normal volumes.

  2. Understanding speech without the need to lip-read.

  3. Listening to and talking over the phone get easier.

  4. Being able to hear music better after the surgery.

  5. Picking up loud, medium and soft sounds.

  6. Modulating your own voice gets better, so others understand you easily.

Disadvantages/Risks Associated With Cochlear Implants-

The risks of cochlear implants are common surgical after-effects such as infection, bleeding and anaesthetic side-effects. Some other complications include:

  1. Alteration in sense of taste due to nerve injury.

  2. Paralysis or weakness on the face due to nerve damage.

  3. Dizziness.

  4. Tinnitus (Ringing in the ear).

  5. Fluid leakage around the brain.

  6. Device can be faulty or get infected.

  7. Meningitis (An infection in the brain).

People Who Can Get Cochlear Implant-

You are eligible to get a cochlear implant if you have:

  1. Profound to severe hearing loss.

  2. Problems with the hearing aid.

  3. A strong wish to improve your hearing.

  4. Even children with severe hearing loss in both the ears can get a cochlear implant. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a specilized ear-nose-throat-ent-specialist and ask a free question.

What are the advantage and disadvantage of chewing basil (Tulsi) leaves before breakfast?

M.Sc - Dietitics / Nutrition
Dietitian/Nutritionist,
What are the advantage and disadvantage of chewing basil (Tulsi) leaves before breakfast?
The health benefits of holy basil, also known as tulsi, include oral care, relief from respiratory disorders, as well as treatment of fever, asthma, lung disorders, heart diseases and stress. 1.Makes the blood thin: Eating more tulasi will make your blood thin. This will be one of the great problem. This cannot be taken with anti clotting medicine. The symptom is while getting injured the blood flows more and the skin gets bluish. 2. Hypoglycaemia: This is one kind of problem where the level of glucose gets reduce. Most of the people to reduce the glucose on their body eats glucose. If diabetes and hypoglycaemia patient along with medicine eats tulasi than the glucose level decreases more and this can be a problematic. The symptoms are dizziness, feels hungry, weakness etc. 3. Effects reproduction: The excess of tulasi will affect the reproduction on male. This has been tested on rabbit giving 2 gram tulasi each day where the spermatozoa number is seen to be decreased. 4. Effect on pregnant women: Women who is pregnant shouldn’t eat tulasi, this will affect her as well as her child. The cervix gets contract which brings the problem during delivery and later the menstruation problem will occur and other infection might too occurs. The symptoms are bleeding, back pain etc. 5. Drug interaction: Some of the medicine that we eat gets altered due to this tulasi. Medicine is eaten for treatment and if there is any blockade and the reaction is nil than that will be more problematic.
