The pain is not in the shoulder joint. But at the upper arm and the pain is only when the hand is moved back or twisted.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. This pain can actually be muscular if it is not for a long duration or it could just be coming from shoulder region as movements at shoulder are causing this. If it is mild to moderate in intensity, my advice will be ice packs 3-4 times at home, gentle anti inflammatory medication like tab etoshine or tab paracetamol or one which suits her for 5-7 days, adequate calcium and vitamin d intake, intensive physical therapy initially with modalities till pain subsides, and then gentle strengthening exercises after that. We can follow this for 2-3 weeks and see if symptoms are improving or not otherwise we will get some investigations done. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. Thanks & regards

Back Pain: Is It Slip Disc? How Can Physiotherapy Help?

BPTh/BPT, MPT
Physiotherapist, Pune
Back Pain: Is It Slip Disc? How Can Physiotherapy Help?

Physiotherapy heals gently and slowly. No medication / non surgical way of treating spine

What causes a slip (herniated) disc?

Violent injury or the normal aging process or by everyday activities- lifting heavy objects the wrong way, stretching too hard during a sports activity, commonly happens in neck (cervical spine) or lower back (lumbar spine).

How can physiotherapy reduce pain and disc pressure?

To know how does physiotherapy helps first we need know about the occurrence of events at spine after prolapsed disc.

Whenever disc herniation occurs muscles try to protect slip of the disc as a result there is sudden muscles spasm because of which there sudden onset of pain and slipped disc also causes lot of inflammation when it presses surrounding ligaments and vessels. Situation worsens when person tries to move with stiff back more pain results due to wrong movement of muscle.

If pain killers are taken then till an extent they help to reduce inflammation and spasm, but prolapsed disc is mechanical problem. Compression on ligaments and occlusion of blood vessel persists. Pain comes back on stopping pain killers.

Physiotherapy works on the disc compression by correcting the alignment (posture). With manual therapy (mobilization) and electrotherapy instruments compression and pain reduces.

For, exercises are prescribed in opposite direction of disc compression so further compression can be reduced and strong muscles can support the spine inefficient way. Physical therapy works on the cause of the pain, not just suppresses it.

I am 60 years old and suffering from constipation and joints pain. May I seek your valuable advice.

Diploma in Acupuncture, Pranic Healing, MD - Acupuncture
Acupuncturist, Bangalore
Reasons for constipation are many. The main reasons are irregular eating habits, wrong diet, less of water intake, avoiding fruits and vegetables, excessive smoking etc. Pl try the following. Take one teaspoonful of fenugreek with water in empty stomach in the morning daily. Drink plenty of water, avoid junk foods, maida based items like pizza etc. Go for a brisk walk and do breathing exercises. Constipation is the cause of majority of the illness as toxins accumulate. Press the mid point on the chin below the lower lip 10 times in the morning. Identify the dipping portion on the back of your knee folding. Press this dip with both middle fingers and hold your knee with your thumbs for support. Please swing 20 times morning and evenings. This will relieve your problem. Press the point on the web between 2nd and 3rd finger from toe in the foot 20 times by pressing and releasing with a blunt edge of a pen. Further rotate your foot clockwise and anticlockwise 10 times. Massage your leg with both hands. Consult me after 10 days.
