How to Know if Your Child Suffers From Food Allergy

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Delhi
How to Know if Your Child Suffers From Food Allergy

Your child is fond of nuts and has eaten a chocolate with nuts but shortly after that develops a skin rash and starts to itch. The rash may even spread to the surrounding area. This is an indication of food allergy to nuts.

What happens is simple - the body's immune system recognizes specific proteins in the food as harmful (antigens) and produces antibodies which can combat them. This leads to an allergic reaction which can vary from something as simple as a skin rash to severe breathing issues.
Though any child can develop food allergies, in most cases, there is a strong hereditary linkage. If parents have had a history of allergy to certain foods, then there is a strong likelihood that the child could have that food allergy too.

Some of the common foods that can cause allergies are as follows:

  1. Cow's milk
  2. Eggs
  3. Nuts (peanuts, walnuts, pecans, cashews or hazelnuts)
  4. Soy
  5. Wheat
  6. Fish (salmon, cod and others)
  7. Shellfish (lobsters, shrimps and others)

Of these, peanuts, seafood, and milk are the most common food stuffs that lead to allergies.

Because the child is yet to realize that he has eaten something that his system will not readily accept, the allergic reaction can be described in various ways, as below:

  1. Scratching or itching on the tongue
  2. Change in the voice - can become husky or hoarse
  3. Burning of the tongue
  4. Tingling of the tongue
  5. Funny feeling in the mouth
  6. Feeling of something stuck in the throat
  7. Itchy feeling or bugs in the ears
  8. Throat going thick
  9. Bump on the back of the tongue

These are some ways that a child can describe his allergic reaction. Some of the mild symptoms of a food allergy are as follows:

  1. Hives (red, swollen, itchy areas on the skin)
  2. Eczema of the skin (dry, itchy rash)
  3. Nasal congestion
  4. Sneezing
  5. Itching of the tongue and the mouth
  6. Nausea or vomiting
  7. Stomach pain

Severe symptoms include:

  1. Severe swelling of the lips and tongue that can block breathing
  2. Inability to swallow
  3. Difficulty breathing
  4. Turning blue
  5. Dropping of pulse
  6. Drowsiness

As the parent identifies a similar reaction when eating the same food item, they can suspect allergic reactions and immediately reach out to the doctor. A detailed discussion will help establish the causative agent. Once that is known, then avoiding food allergies is quite easy. In fact, a well-informed child will know that avoiding certain foods is very beneficial. This will improve the quality of life of the child, help avoid missing school due to allergic reactions, and help avoid the child (and the parent) suffering.

She has child asthma what are precautions and consult about good treatment for my daughter.

MD Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Hyderabad
As a parent of asthmatic child there are few precautions to be followed apart from giving medications. Avoid child getting exposed to very cold air/breeze, avoid dust (roads, construction areas, while cleaning home) avoid wollen clothes or hairy cloths or beddings, avoid artificial colours, flavours. Be extra cautious in winter and rainy seasons. Always keep inhalers and medications related to asthma even if you are travelling.

do you have family history of asthama? the right medications for you depend on a number of things, including your age, your symptoms, your breathing triggers and what seems to work best to keep your breathlessness under control. Preventive, long-term control medications reduce the inflammation in your airways that leads to symptoms. Quick-relief inhalers (bronchodilators) quickly open swollen airways that are limiting breathing. In some cases, allergy medications are necessary. Do reply back for medication prescriptions. Being also a general physician and registered dietitian, I prescribe both evidence based herbal as well as allopathic medicines complementing with dietary guidelines and home remedies carefully personalized for each individual patient.

Hello lybrate-user. From the symptoms described by you along with the history, it does seem to be due to hypersensitivity (allergy) to some substance. At times, it has been seen to occur due to insect bite. In your case, it could be due to the fish that you had. Have you had any previous allergic reactions to any food stuffs? if yes, then it would correlate well. If no, then it could be the first episode. Maintain a light diet for at least 2 weeks. Along with it, use the medicines that have been prescribed to you. Also, go to the eye specialist as and when advised and get your eye pressure monitored. Hope my suggestions helped you.

Can Food Allergies Be the Likely Cause of Your Infertility?

MBBS, DGO, MD, Fellowship in Gynae Oncology
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Can Food Allergies Be the Likely Cause of Your Infertility?

Infertility in a woman refers to the inability to conceive after having regular unprotected sex. Cases of unexplained infertility have been on the rise recently. Though obstructed fallopian tubes and ovulation disorders are some of the common causes of infertility, reasons pertaining to dietary changes can also be responsible. Food allergies and dietary changes affect infertility to a great extent; and if you're struggling with conception or infertility, reviewing your diet can help.

Gluten is a basic food constituent that is likely to cause infertility. Gluten is a protein found in grains like wheat, rye, and barley. Among the general population, women suffering from unexplained infertility have a higher incidence of gluten intolerance. Gluten intolerance is also related to miscarriages, and if left undiagnosed can lead to malabsorption of micronutrients like iron and zinc. Following and maintaining a gluten-free diet may relieve a sufferer from the symptoms. Try and include gluten free cereals like rice, corn and gluten free oats to manage the situation.

Inflammation - Another connection of food allergies and infertility would be inflammation. Inflammation occurs when the food allergens reach the stomach. This inflammation, if heightened, can cause damage to the fallopian tubes and the ovary. The body responds to the food allergens by treating it like a foreign substance that needs to be eradicated, and when your immune system is subjected to chronic inflammation, it can lead to infertility.

Additionally, apart from food allergies, even the consumption of certain foods and beverages can be a reason behind infertility, with those being rich in caffeine being a major cause. Increased consumption of caffeine can augment the risk of infertility and delayed conception. However, avoiding caffeine and eliminating problematic foods along with a careful scrutiny of your diet can increase your chances of getting pregnant.

An attack may be brought on by contact with substances to which the person is sensitive and emotional or dietary factors should not be overlooked. A sudden change of temperature can bring on an attack. Some alleviation of the symptoms may be obtained with the use of the appropriate tissue salts. Consult a homeopath/Biochemist who will ask you questions to ascertain your personality and ailment. Permanent cure is available in homeopathy. In the mean time try CUPRUM ARS ,KALI PHOS , NAT SULPH 12X 4 pills 4 times A DAY OF EACH. GOD bless
