Kidney Stones - Types And Common Symptoms

The 4 types of Kidney stones and their common symptoms

Defined as hard and small mineral deposits that develop inside your kidney, kidney stones are made up of acid salts and minerals. The causes of this disease are not well-defined, although risk factors include drinking very little amounts of water and having a diet rich in sodium, protein and oxalate (chocolate and green leafy foods for example). However, knowing the type of kidney stone you suffer from can help ascertain the cause.

Here are the common types of Kidney stones.

Struvite stones

This type of kidney stone is usually a response to certain kind of infection, such as a urinary tract infection for example. Characterised by rapid growth and a large size, struvite stones can develop without any warning signs.

Calcium stones

These are the most common type and are caused by a diet rich in oxalate. Risk factors for calcium stones include a diet consisting of plenty of nuts, chocolates and certain fruits and vegetables; metabolic disorders, high doses of vitamin d and intestinal bypass surgery, all of which can increase the amounts of calcium or oxalate in your urine, indicating the development of kidney stones.

Cystine stones

Those individuals with a hereditary disorder that causes their kidneys to produce certain amino acids (cystinuria to be precise) in excess are most likely to get cystine stones.

Uric acid stones

These are common in those whose diets are lacking in water or those who suffer from the excess fluid loss. People with a high protein diet and those who suffer from gout are also at risk. Genetic factors play a major role as well in increasing your risk of getting uric acid stones.

Apart from these, there are other rarer types of kidney stones that can also arise depending on a combination of an individual's lifestyle and genetic make-up.

However, to determine whether you're suffering from any of the aforementioned types of kidney stones, you must first know its common symptoms, which are:

  •   Excruciating pain in your sides, and back, especially below your ribs
  •   Feelings of pain in the groin and the lower parts of your abdomen
  •   Intense and fluctuating pain that comes and goes in waves
  •   Pain while urinating
  •   Urine that is red, brown or pink in colour
  •   Urine that's cloudy or has a foul odour
  •   Vomiting and nausea
  •   Constant urge to urinate
  •   Increased frequency of urination
  •   Urinating in small amounts
  •   Chills and fever in case of an infection

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a nephrologist and ask a free question.

It could be a kidney stone. Take an ultrasound scan of abdomen and pelvis immediately to confirm the diagnosis. There are plenty medications to treat kidney stones / renal calculi.

Sir prostate enlargement can be benign or malignant. It needs evaluation by serum psa levels, sonography, and transrectal multiple core biopsy for confirmation. If it is benign can be started on some medications or else treatment as per the diagnosis.

It may be because of low water intake. Start drinking plenty of water it will help to remove pus cells in urine. Or it may be because of UTI for that you have to consult the physician.

Respected lybrate-user hi burning during micturition occurs due to some semen inside urethra after ejaculation. Burning anal top is self induced as you stopped urine in between. Don't hesitate drink plenty of water & other liquids you will be alright in 24 hours you don't require treatment at present. Just advisable to avoid sex for today only. Thanks regards.

When I masturbate. Usually nothing is wrong, but sometimes after I masturbate, a few minutes later I have to urinate. And when I do, it is usually very painful. The feeling doesn't pass either. My scrotum usually gets tightened up, and there is painful feeling above my crotch. Usually I just sit there, drink some water and I have to urinate (if I can'nt) and very little amount of urine is come for 25-40 min. Until the feeling goes away. ANY idea what this is?

This is a normal phenomenon. There is nothing to worry about this. You can do kegel exercise daily to strengthen your muscles. You will have a greater control over your urination. Before masturbating, make sure that you pass urine beforehand. Holding urine while masturbating can cause some trouble while passing urine later on.

Sir I am 19 years old. I have only 1 testicle the other one is detected near pelvis ,urinary bladder. One doctor suggested general surgery better than Laparoscopic because he told that near pelvis there is a bunch of veins or nerves related to urine. Laparoscopic may have any complications. Is this true or Laparoscopic is better. I am very confused. I have consulted with another doctor he told us that Laparoscopic don't have any complications. please help me. And is it right decision to remove the testicle or bought it down. The testicle is smaller in size. Will there be any complications if it is removed.

Hi lybrate-user. It depends on the surgeons efficiency to do it laparoscopically. Some are very much experienced so they can handle such cases where as some may not. When it comes to the question of getting it removed, yes it is a right choice, since testis are already smaller in size that is its atrophied it means it can not serve its purpose of producing harmones or spermatogenesis! This happens so because the testicles can not survive in higher temperature as in the case of pelvis or abdomen! More over if its left that way it can go into complications one of which is testicular carcinoma. Hope this clears your doubt.

Hello, healing of anal fissure is delayed due to reasons like -bacterial infection from exposure to rascal matter. -spasm of anal sphincter muscles causing delay in healing. Have you tried sitz bath? sitz bath with potassium permanganate or betadine solution twice a day is very helpful in healing. Soframycin is an antibacterial ointment and there is no harm in using it. You may require ointment to release sphincter spasm. Meet a surgeon. Sphincter release surgeries are useful in refractory cases.

Is this possible that if any women have stone. But she do not want operation. Does stone can be removed by homeopathy?
Hi yes homoeopathic medicines are quite effective in treating renal calculi if the stone is small in size, say up to 6 mm. Homoeopathic medicine along with large quantity of water n fluids helps in its removal. There are many homoeopathic medicine depending upon the side of kidney affected, the size of stone, the symptomatology of patient. Please tell me the size of the stone, the side affected and the symptoms so that I can guide you further on this.

Does operation are required for kidney stone? Or else it can be resolve by normal intake of medicine.

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

Does operation are required for kidney stone? Or else it can be resolve by normal intake of medicine.
Tips for removing kidney stones: 1. Avoid tea, coffee, alcohol, cold drinks, pickles, fish, poultry, meat, spinach, and chocolate. 2. Avoid sour, heavy, and dry food. 3. Increase intake of liquids like water, juice, soup, lime water lemon soda etc. 4. Be sure to drink enough water each day. Usually 1 to 2 liters of water per day is adequate. 5. Drink more if you are perspiring heavily, working outdoors, the weather is hot, etc. 6. Increase the use of barley, horse gram (a type of bean), ginger, and brown rice or parboiled rice. 7. Avoid suppressing urges to urinate and defecate. 9. Boil 10-12 basil leaves in 1 cup of water for 15 minutes. Mix 1 teaspoon of honey in it and take twice a day. Dear operation or medication depends upon size, number, and location of stones. Pls send your usg report.
