Rule out obstructive uropathy and its causes. The commonest cause at your age would be benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Thanks for the query. Insulin is usually recommended to be taken half an hour before food. Because by the time digestion of food converts it to glucose, insulin is available for action. Insulin does not cause any other side effects. Occasionally if food delayed or if inadequate food is taken, then there is a possibility of glucose level going down (hypoglycemia). If you have any other doubts please come back. Thanks.

Few tips on diet for kidney disease - have a low protein diet (decrease in milk and its products and also decrease in the intake of pulses and nuts etc) - can use corn oil, sunflower oil, olive oil for cooking -decrease the intake of butter, ghee, cream, coconut etc - avoid farsan food items - whole grain cereals are best for carbohydrate intake - get your blood checked for electrolyte levels regularly and adjust salt in diet as per the report values.

Dear lybrate user, -The kidney stones will be removed from the roots by laser but if she doesn't take precautions after that they can again form -she should have plenty of fluids including8-10 glasses of water per day to flush out the toxins & to keep the kidneys healthy, also avoid spicy, fried food & intake of calcium substitutes for a long period if she consumes them -get regular checkups & investigations done to avoid recurrence.

Nephrotic Syndrome - Recommended Diet For It!

Nephrotic Syndrome - Recommended Diet For It!

Nephrotic Syndrome is a condition which is characterised by the loss of protein into the urine (called proteinuria) as a result of increased glomerular permeability and oedema. This results in low protein level in the blood. The low levels of protein in blood result in the drawing of fluids into soft tissues. A severe form ‘hypoalbuminemia’ can cause scores of secondary diseases such as ascites (retention of fluid in the abdominal cavity), pleural effusion (build-up of fluids between the lungs and the chest), or high cholesterol. It can also result in retention of fluid in other parts of the body such as eyelids, lower extremities etc.

What can cause this?
Nephrotic syndrome is mainly caused by damage to the kidneys. This leads to an increase in the concentration of protein in the urine. In adults, it can be caused due to glomerulonephritis or damage to the glomerulus of the kidneys while in children it is likely caused by minimal change disease (kidney disease marked by the abnormal loss of protein through the urine).

The other common causes of nephritic syndromes are:

  1. Genetic disorder
  2. Immune disorder
  3. Cancer
  4. Infection
  5. Use of specific drugs
  6. Certain diseases such as diabetes mellitus, lupus
  7. The incidence of this disease is seen more often in males than in females.

Diet that is recommended in Nephrotic Syndrome:
In patients diagnosed with Nephrotic syndrome, the intake of salt, fat and protein must be checked. There should be emphasis on the consumption of dietary fibres that are present in vegetables and fruits.
The intake of protein and fluid should also be monitored, but this solely depends on personal factors such as age, weight and condition of the patient. It is recommended to consult a renal dietician who can guide you appropriately.

  1. Sodium/salt intake: The sodium or salt intake must be restricted as it leads to high blood pressure and results in fluid retention in the body, thus causing oedema (build-up of fluids within the body cavities and tissues) in the body. Avoid processed food as it contains a lot of salt.
  2. Protein intake: Protein is an essential part of the diet as it helps in the general makeup of the body and development of muscles. The consumption of protein must be kept under check and it is the best to consult your dietician for this. Loss of protein in urine needs to be replaced by class 1 high quality proteins in nephrotic syndrome.
  3. Limit fat and cholesterol intake: It is always good to curb on bad cholesterol as it is the reason behind several heart diseases. But, with patients diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome, it is highly recommended to avoid food rich in fats. This means staying away from unhealthy fatty meat or junk food.
  4. Fluid intake: Fluid intake does not have to be necessarily reduced, but it is always good to consult your doctor for the same.

“You are what you eat”. Nephrotic syndrome can slowly progress to chronic kidney disease if the necessary steps are not taken to curb it in an early stage, and diet control is a major way to do so.

My husband having itching problem around anus at one side. He is having itching heavily. Already tried ring guard but didn't cured. What to do?

MS - General Surgery, MBBS
General Surgeon, Nagpur
Hello lybrate-user, Itching around anus is not just because of any fungal infection. Ring guard only fights against fungus. A detailed examination of anus might help to know the cause of itching. I suggest you ask your husband to start SITZ bath at least 3 times a day and keep good anal hygiene. Hope this helps. Many thanks.

Would recommend Ice Baths along with regular cold Abdominal / Hip Baths - 3 times a week. Take Enema at least 2 - 3 times a week - which shall clear your entire digestive system. Mud Baths are also highly recommended for cooling down the entire body system. Avoid hot and spicy food. Consume juices and salads more. Hydrate yourself well. For facial pores, weekly cucumber plus aloe vera face masks are recommended for facial skin. Fresh Aloe Vera pulp can be applied all over the body. Would recommend you to visit a naturopathy centre for Mud Bath - rest you can do at home as well - if you have a tub for the bath. Again, hydrate yourself well - regular consumption of water and juices like lime, coconut, etc is a must.

I am Aslam aged 60. My prostate is enlarged in size and measures 4.1*4.4*3.9cm vol 36.9cc
Impression: prostatomegaly ...
Dear your scan reports mention prostatomegaly approx 37 cc with bilateral large simple renal cyst. Firstly, treatment of prostate enlargement depends on your symptoms. If you don't have any urinary complaints you may not require treatment at all or if they are mild can be treated with medicines. If moderate to severe, surgery might be required. Secondly, I would like to know the size of renal cyst even though if they are simple. As such for simple cyst no active treatment is required.
