Which fruits are good and which are bad for people with diabetes? I once came across a GI (glycemic index) chart at a doctors chamber and read that grapes are low in GI but watermelons are high which contradicts doctor's opinion. So are fruits with low GI really good for diabetic people?

All fruits are good for diabetics. Only you have to take them in specified amount. Fruits contain mainly fructose, which is inert sugar and very less glucose. Fruit juice is not allowed.

Some times sudden excess of fiber intake can result in to gas which in turn can lead to low grade pain in abdomen. Chew your food properly and eat slowly. Drink more water. Some times infection in the abdomen also presents similarly. You may benefit from antacids and antibiotic/anti amoebic drugs.

Thanks for the query. When blood glucose goes too low (hypoglycemia), some patients do behave in a funny manner. 60 mg is a very low level, that can trigger unusual behavior. Plus the person may get symptoms like shivering, sweating, blurring of vision, giddiness, even black outs. So please see that her glucose levels do not go below 80 or 90 mg. Since there is no mention of drugs and dosage which she is taking, HbA1c%, correct fasting, PP levels, age of the patient and whether she is physically active. Unless all the details are given, it is difficult say anything further. Thanks.

Top 5 Reasons To Avoid Sugar!

Top 5 Reasons To Avoid Sugar!

Simple sugar is also known as 'monosaccharide', which is the basic unit of carbohydrates. The simplest forms of sugar are usually colourless and exist in forms of glucose, fructose and galactose. Simple sugar is deemed to be a major concern according to all health nutritionists.

Here are five reasons why you should avoid them:

  1. Sugar is the biggest cause of obesity: Sugar present in all kinds of junk food is considered to be the biggest cause of obesity as fructose easily converts into fat inside your body. Consuming too much sugar can put too much pressure on your liver as it is responsible for converting fructose into fat. Large amounts of sugar are directly converted into fat, thus, putting you at a very high risk of becoming obese.
  2. Increases risks of contracting heart diseases: Consuming too much sugar throughout the day causes a hike in your insulin levels which can further affect your nervous system. An excess of sugar in your bloodstream also causes your blood pressure to rise which makes you more likely to get a heart stroke. Thus, to avoid cardiac problems at a young age, you must cut down your sugar intake.
  3. Weakens immune system: Sugar is a major reason for inflammation which affects the central immune system adversely. With an excess intake of sugar, the body becomes less effective in dealing with infection and common cold because phagocytes (white blood cells) cannot do their job properly without engulfing dangerous bacteria. Thus, you should aim at boosting your immune system by cutting down on sugar completely.
  4. Sugar can make you age faster: The sugar content in your body creates molecules known as AGEs (Advanced Glycation End Products) which attack the fibers in elastin and collagen (the building blocks of the cells on your skin). A study also proved that consuming too much sugar can result in acne as the collagen in your skin weakens. Thus, to maintain youthful looking skin for longer, you should remove sugar from your diet completely.
  5. Sugar can be addictive: Most people who consume too much sugar get addicted to it. According to a study, the addiction to sugar is very similar to addiction to tobacco and drugs. You might start experiencing sugar cravings and depending on it, your mood will also get to change more often than required.

Hello Mr. lybrate-user! Although your blood sugar levels are not alarmingly high, nevertheless high blood sugar levels do have their detrimental effects on the body. The oral cavity (mouth) is not saved either! High blood sugar levels bring down the immunity of the body and minor and small infections also escalate causing a lot of problems. I strongly suggest you to keep your blood sugar levels under control and meet good physician who can help you with that. Oral Health can be kept optimum by timely visits to your dentists and taking his/her recommendations seriously and putting them into practise. A good dentist will always tell you about best practises and tips and tricks about keeping a good oral hygiene. Do not ignore small decays and never ignore gum disease, as these are especially more common in diabetics. Regarding a good toothpaste. Well there is no such thing as the best tooth paste. Any tooth paste is always as good as your brushing habits and techniques. Although I would suggest you to keep away from tooth pastes which have any type of abrasives in it, as long term use of these can be detrimental to the tooth structure. There you go. I hope this was of some help to you. Do take good care of your teeth! Thanks, Cheers.

The most important thing to take care now is tha the kidneys dont get damaged further. So control diabetes and BP if she has it. What is the fasting blood glucose level result? Consult in private on Lybrate or personally with information about your main complains, lifestyle, lab results and diet for detailed advice.

Mr. lybrate-user, thanks for the query. Diabetes mellitus T2, is a disease which does run in the family. But it can be prevented by adapting a modifies healthy lifestyle. That is keeping fit, weight under control, BMI < 23 kgs/M2, taking healthy diet and doing regular exercise. It is better to avoid eating sweets, deep fried foods, sugary drinks and junk foods. Taking "sugar free" tablets as a substitute for sugar is also not very good. Thanks.
