My father is operated by pass surgery last month. Which type of food we gave him.

Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
My father is operated by pass surgery last month. Which type of food we gave him.
One month after operation he can have a normal diet like you people eat at home-daal ,roti, subjee , chaawal . Avoid extra salt through sauces , pickles , paapads and other foods which require preservatives , do not sprinkle salt on salads , encourage him to eat more of seasonal vegetables and fruits compared to before surgery , few nuts for good fats , a spoon of desighee or pure butter but no oily transfats like biscuits , cakes ,namkeen , street food or fried food at home. Use musturd oil for cooking and soy oil for frying ( yes sometimes he can be treated to home made pakodas/ puris) He should have 5 meals instead of large 3 meals . Do keep him occupied with light activities for body and some brain teasers to be aware of world around him. Whatever was his schedule before surgery , try to make him get back after 3 months of surgery.

I feel so tired ever, my friends are told that you look like lazy man, I think so. What is the reason and how I prevent that?

BAMS
Ayurveda, Ambala
Dear, if you tired very fast and feeling weakness. Then you will definitely recover from weakness by following these very useful tips. * you should take proper balanced diet first. That means you have to take vegetables, milk, chapattis or rice, butter / cream, cereals (daals) or cheese every day. Very important thing, do not miss or skip your meals at any cost and take meals on time. * proper 6-8 hours sleep is very important. If your sleep is less than 6 hours, then you feel tired very early. So complete your sleep. * do breathing execises daily in morning & evening. Just sit down in peaceful place, close your eyes, take deep and long breaths in and out. Do it atleast for 10-15 minutes daily. You can also do pranayams like anulom vilom for better results. *take a walk, in first walk normally for 10-15 minutes for 15 days. You can do it on treadmill also. * you can take ashvagandha churn of baidyanath 1 teaspoon with milk daily for 2 months atleast to get your strength back. * check out your haemoglobin level in 3 months, if it is low you get tired early. So get treatment of low haemoglobin (anemia). If you have any disease like asthma /diabetes / hypertension, then get complete treatment of them. * avoid all fast foods and habit of smoking or drinking. You surely get great strength and recover from weakness by following these important things.

My period cycle is irregular. And I am trying to conceive baby? Pls tell me the solution.

IVF Specialist, Sahibganj
My period cycle is irregular. And I am trying to conceive baby? Pls tell me the solution.
Hi, I think you should go for evaluation first. Do a thyroid profile and prolactin levels and a ultrasound for your uterus and ovaries. May be some medicines will be required. Then, you can take some medicines like clomiphene for the growth of your follicles and track your follicles growth by repeated ultrasound. When follicles reach a size more than 17 to 18 mm, take injection for rupturing the follicles. Be in contact with your husband for next 2 to 3 days. Take progesterone for next 2 weeks. Do a urine pregnancy test at home after that. You can try like that for 3 to 6 months. Hope I have answered your question. Regards

Sugary drinks versus sugary sweets (mithai)

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Sugary drinks versus sugary sweets (mithai)
When we talk about health, everybody talks against soft drinks. They say that one should not substitute water with soft drinks. One should take not more than one soft drink a day.

From medical point of view, soft drinks mean any drink, which contains more than 10% sugar. Oral rehydration solution that is medically recommended for dehydration and marketed as a replacement solution is not a sugary drink as it contains not more than 2–3% sugar. A 200 ml bottle of soft drink, on an average, contains 20 gm of sugar, which amounts to 10%.

Most mithais or the so-called Indian sweets contain more than 10% sugar; an average person consumes 100 gm of sweets per meal.

The traditional halwas such as moong ki daal ka halwa or gajar ka halwa or suji halwa contain 30% sugar. Suji Halwa is made of one cup of ghee, one cup of suji and two cups of sweet syrup and four cups of water. Kalakand is the least sweetened Indian sweet as it contains only 300 gm of sugar in 10kg of milk. Indian traditional Burfi is 3 kg sugar in 10 kg of khoya. Kaaju burfi is 50% sugar, gulab jamun is 40% sugar, rasgulla syrup contains 50% sugar (made of only cow milk and sugar).

The sugar syrup, or chashni as it is called, is 50% sugar. Most soft drinks have 10% sugar.

Most Indian sweets are prepared either in sugar syrup or vanaspati ghee (hydrogenated oils). A sweet cannot be made in artificial sweeteners as artificial sweetener cannot be converted into a sugar syrup or chashni. The sweets prepared in vanaspati ghee are gulab jamun, laddoo, patisa, balushahi, sohan halwa. Sohn halwa contains the maximum hydrogenated oil. Balushahi also contains 60% ghee.

The sweets that are prepared without any ghee are those prepared with sugar syrup; they are rasgulla, ras malai, chum chum etc.

Most salty snacks are made in soyabean oil which is the cheapest oil. Other oils, which can be used are sunflower oil, cottonseed oil. Samosa, kachori are made of maida but they are not cooked in transfat or hydrogenated oils but in soyabean oil.

The hydrogenated oils or vanaspati ghee is only present in items like laddoo, balushahi, besan ka laddoo, patisa etc.

I am 25 years old married woman and also pursuing my masters, I lost my mother in cancer, 3 years back and since then I feel lonely and helpless even if I have all other friends and family to support me. I lost my confidence too. Is it a sign of depression? What can be done about it?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

I am 25 years old married woman and also pursuing my masters, I lost my mother in cancer, 3 years back and since then...
I think you need to look at handling your grief and dealing with your mother's loss once and for all. This could put you into a sadness related depression but you will be able to come out of it if you express your grief in totality and effectively. The sooner you do it the better for your studies. You must be active and work towards your reformation. Many lifestyle changes need to be made to progress away for the condition. When you are depressed, you will feel lazy though I would like to call it lethargy. There is an inertia and lack of energy to even think, let alone act. You are required to literally do the opposite of what you feel like doing. Depression makes you want to withdraw, lie down, sleep, become lethargic, slow down, make you too lazy to even think etc. So when I suggested doing the opposite, you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, eat more of proteins, nuts, fruits, and vegetables, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scotching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three things, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. The counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success.

How to avoid fever.

AUTLS, CCEDM, MD - Internal Medicine, MBBS
General Physician,
How to avoid fever.
Fever is not considered medically significant until body temperature is above 100.4 F (38 C). Fever serves as one of the body's natural defences against bacteria and viruses which cannot live at a higher temperatures. Also, the body's defence mechanisms seem to work more efficiently at a higher temperature -Fevers of 104 F (40 C) or higher may be dangerous and demand immediate treatments like: -Acetaminophen (dolo-650 mg) twice or thrice can be used to lower a fever . Aspirin should not be used for fever in children/ adolescents or during a viral illness. -Wear loose fitting clothes and don’t overdress. Overdressing can cause temperature to rise further. -Tepid water (85 F [30 C]) baths may help bring down a fever -The body should be cooled with a wet sponge. -A fever can cause severe dehydration. Drink plenty of fluids.. Have citrus fruits, particularly Vitamin C rich ones like mausami, Amla juice etc. -Take light and easily digestible home cooked meals .avoid outside food -Wash hands frequently with soap and water especially after returning from public places or public transport. -Further therapy depends on the cause of fever like urinary infection/typhoid or malaria/dengue infection and the accompanying symptoms that need to be investigated and treated accordingly

I lost somebody close last year and since then feel very depressed and prefer keeping tomy self all the time. Please help me.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Guwahati
I lost somebody close last year and since then feel very depressed and prefer keeping tomy self all the time. Please ...
Losing someone close is a very painful situation when one undergoes immense emotional suffering. Grief is a natural response to loss of someone or something important for you. It’s the emotional suffering one undergoes following the loss. But life has to go on so one should cope with these difficult emotions in a healthy way. Last one year must have been a difficult time for you. Try the following to cope with the loss: •Face your feelings: More you try to avoid or suppress your feelings & loss, the pain will get more intense & prolonged. Unresolved grief can also lead to complications such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and health problems. Accept the loss, acknowledge the pain & face it. When it comes to the mind, do not try to divert your mind, but try to rationalize the thought & explain yourself the reality. •Do not stay alone, but try to stay amongst friends, family members or anyone you are comfortable with & share your feelings. At the same time avoid people who demotivate you, spread negativity or make you feel more uncomfortable. •If you follow a religious tradition, then spend some time in spiritual activities like praying & meditating, as it provides solace. •Express your feelings in a creative way: You can write down your feelings, make an album depicting aspects of the life of your loved one, do something constructive like fulfilling some incomplete task of your close one, and do some good social work in his or her name or something that your close one would have liked. You can plant a tree in his or her name & take care of it. •Usually the grief comes back during events like death anniversaries, birthday, days which were significant to of the one gone. Memories & feelings get awakened at those moments. So mentally prepare yourself before such events & do something constructive on that day. •Maintain a schedule & try to follow it to keep yourself diverted & active. Go for a walk, exercise regularly, eat healthy, sleep adequately. •Avoid substance of abuse. Many a times it is seen people take support of abusive substances like alcohol, drugs, cannabis etc to run away from the pain of loss. It is an unhealthy way of coping with grief & does harm in the long run. Stay away from any substance of abuse. •Pursue your hobbies or those activities that provided you joy & satisfaction. •Take a break & plan a holiday to reduce the stress. •Join a support group consisting of people who had experienced similar loss. Sharing with someone who can understand your feeling really helps. Staying alone & isolated brings in more pain. Now-a-days there are such groups in social media including Facebook where they post messages reading which provides comfort, where one can post their feelings as well. But one should take proper precautions before posting personal information in those memorial pages. You can opt to create a closed group in Facebook than posting in a public page. •If the grief persists, get yourself evaluated by a Psychiatrist who will evaluate you & advice you counseling sessions or prescribe you medicines accordingly. •Allow time to heal. Time is the best healer, & with time the pain will lessen up but memories will remain intact. So have patience & continue with life in a positive way.

You need to get scaling (cleaning) done so as to remove all the plaque and calculus, the gum bleeding, pus and bad breath would regress over a period of 10-15 days. Also do clean your tongue properly and use a good mouthwash as well.
