Top Five Tips From The Dentist For Diabetics

Top Five Tips From The Dentist For Diabetics
Among the many health risks of diabetes is a decline in oral health that makes patients more vulnerable to gum disease. According to dental professionals, this happens because diabetes slows the body's circulation, making the gums more susceptible to infection. The metabolic disorder also increases glucose (sugar) levels in saliva, which fuels the growth of dental plaque that attacks the teeth and gums. To protect against the disorder, follow these simple tips.

1. Visit your dentist regularly.

Because diabetics are at a much higher risk of gum disease than the average patient, you should never miss a dental appointment. In fact, you should schedule regular checkups two to four times a year. With professional cleanings and regular examinations, common mouth conditions, such as ulcers, dry mouth, and infections can be controlled. To prevent bouts of low blood sugar, it may be a good idea to eat before you see your dentist. It is also crucial that you inform him or her of any oral problems you may be having -- no matter how minor they may seem.

2. Follow a strict oral hygiene regimen.

All diabetics should and really must brush and floss daily, preferably after every meal. This will help remove the plaque that can cause gum disease, thereby lowering your risk for mouth ulcers and infections. It is recommended that you complete your oral hygiene routine at least three times a day. Because your risk of oral infection is elevated, it is important to avoid aggressive brushing that can cause cuts and sores. You may even want to use a soft-bristled brush or an electric model for a safer, more comfortable brushing experience.

3. Control your blood sugar.

As we mentioned, sugar stimulates plaque growth, which causes tooth decay and gum disease. Because diabetics have more glucose (sugar) in their blood, they also tend to have a lot more plaque on their teeth. But if you can keep your blood sugar low, you can reduce your risk of periodontal disease.

4. Don't smoke.

In a perfect world, nobody would smoke -- especially people with diabetes. The unhealthy activity causes a laundry list of serious complications, including oral infections and periodontal diseases. According to dental professionals, smoking can more than double your risk of cavities and infections.

5. Clean your dentures.

If you have diabetes and you wear false teeth, you are more prone to developing oral thrush -- a fungal infection of the mouth. Typically caused by denture irritation or wear, thrush can be prevented with regular cleaning. It is also recommended that you remove your dentures in between meals to give any irritated tissue the opportunity to heal. Your dentist might also advise you to limit your sugar intake when your mouth is bothered or raw.

Nothing to worry, they are absolutely normal. They are called valate papillae. The circumvallate papillae (or vallate papillae) are dome-shaped structures on the human tongue that vary in number from eight to twelve. They are situated on the surface of the tongue immediately in front of the foramen cecum and sulcus terminalis, forming a row on either side; the two rows run backward and medially, and meet in the midline.

Please provide opg radiograph or xray reports you have. Sometimes there is absence of permanent tooth bud and because of this milk tooth will not shed off. In this situation if the milk tooth is firm and strong then you can go for filling of those decayed teeth. Or if the milk tooth is grossly decayed then go for the extraction of the affected tooth and replacement (either by bridge or implant) of that.

I am suffering from mouth ulcers. Please suggest me a good medicine. Thank you.

MDS - Oral Medicine and Radiology, BDS
Dentist,
Hi, for mouth ulcers, you can apply kenacort gel 0.1% on the ulcers 4 to 5 times a day. If they are common aphthous ulcers, as it is in most of the cases, they will heal in 4 to 6 days. If you have ulcers lasting more than 15 days or if you have recurring ulcers, you should visit an oral medicine specialist. Regards.

My bleeding gums and bad smell from mouth.

Advanced Aesthetics, BDS
Dentist,
Hi, there are various reasons for bleeding gums like poor oral hygiene, vitamin deficiency, physical injury to gums, hormonal changes, medications etc. And there are various reasons of bad breath, like impurities in blood, inefficient digestive system, dry mouth (lack of saliva production), gum disease, cavities, plaque and tartar formation around teeth and gums, kind of diet, improper brushing / cleaning of mouth etc. I would advise you to get a thorough physical and dental examination to rule out the cause of bad breath or bleeding gums and to solve it permanently. You can come for a consultation (free of cost) in our clinic.

The simplest method of removing minor surface stains is polishing, or micro-abrasion if staining is more intrinsic. Provided that your discolouration is not due to inadequate enamel exposing the dentin, tooth whitening (bleaching) is often the most effective treatment for yellow stained teeth. Advance procedures can be done with laser. Use snowdent tooth paste for whitening until then. Apply snowdent paste on the teeth. Wait for 10 to 15 min. Then brush your teeth with the same paste. Applying it overnight for better results.

Doctor, I am a 18 year old guy. I have irregular teeths. I don't want to put braces on my teeths, is there any other solution to straighten my teeths?

Dear , good evening - there is a treatment protocol - clearpath or invisalgin - it can be done by anyone who has been doing it. Basically it is a carry home system and you are responsible for wearing and correctly using the same. Of course it is hardly visible - but if you do not wear as expected do not expect the desired results too. The cost could be a bit discouraging as all the work is done outside the country and shipped to the dental surgeon who again guides you to the same.

3 Primary Causes of Tooth Cavity You Shouldn't Ignore!

3 Primary Causes of Tooth Cavity You Shouldn't Ignore!

3 primary causes of tooth cavity you shouldn't ignore!

Permanently damaged regions on the enamel of the teeth that later develop into holes or openings are known as cavities. They are a common dental problem and can affect people belonging to all age groups. If left untreated, they can lead to infection, severe toothache, and even tooth loss.

Cavities can be caused due to a number of factors. Some of those factors are discussed below-

1. Bacterial action

Cavities can be caused due to tooth decay by the action of bacteria. Bacteria are naturally found in the mouth and they thrive on food and drinks that contain sugar. If the sugar is not cleaned off the teeth, bacteria can react with it to produce acids. This results in the formation of bacterial plaque that sticks to the teeth, resulting in cavities.

2. Frequent snacking

Eating too frequently can result in the formation of cavities as more food intake means more bacteria and bacterial plaque contain harmful acids. These acids remove the mineral content in the hard surface of the tooth. This erosion can lead to cavities and expose the tooth to decay.

3. Unclean tooth

If the tooth is not cleaned well and regularly using good brushing and flossing techniques, cavities can occur more frequently. Unclean teeth are exposed to the risk of cavities more than healthy and clean teeth. In fact, unclean teeth can pose a serious threat to the inner layers of your teeth as well as make the bacterial action more frequent and dangerous.
