Nails - Can They Indicate Any Illness?

Nails - Can They Indicate Any Illness?

We grow up thinking of our nails as dead cells and pay attention to them only to trim them once a week. If you’re a woman, this might extend to painting them in different hues. However, the shape, texture and natural colour of your nails along with the rate at which they grow says a lot about your overall health.

Homeopathy is an effective way of treating nail disorders as it addresses the root cause of the problem. This form of treatment has negligible side effects and hence, can be used over a long period of time. However, homeopathy should never be used to self medicate. This is because a homeopathic prescription depends on the symptoms presented and the personality of the patient.

Here are a few changes in your nails that could be signs of health disturbances.

  1. Horizontal ridges: White horizontal ridges across your nails are developed when there is a pause in the growth of the nail. They could be an indication of an injury or a symptom of a serious illness. These are also known as Beau’s lines or Mee’s lines. Beau’s lines are developed due to psoriasis, diabetes, circulatory disease or a severe deficiency of zinc. Mee’s lines can be a result of arsenic poisoning, malaria, leprosy, Hodgkin’s disease or carbon monoxide poisoning.
  2. Vertical ridges: This is a common sign of aging and is usually nothing to worry about. However, in some cases, it could be a sign of vitamin B12 or magnesium deficiencies.
  3. Spoon nails: If the edges of your nails curve upwards and take on a spoon-like look, it could be a sign of anemia, excessive iron absorption, heart disease or hypothyroidism.
  4. Pitted Nails: Dents or pits in your nails are usually a sign of psoriasis. It could also be a symptom of tissue disorders such as Reiter’s syndrome or autoimmune diseases like alopecia areata.
  5. Dark nails: If you notice dark, discoloured patches on your nails, consult a doctor immediately. This could be due to melanoma which is the most dangerous form of skin cancer.
  6. Yellow Nails: Smoking and excessive use of acrylic nail polish are the two most common causes of yellow nails. However, if your nails are thinand crumbly along with being yellow, it could be a sign of a fungal infection. In rare cases, yellow nails could also be a sign of thyroid disorders, diabetes or psoriasis.
  7. Clubbing: Nails that are enlarged and curved downwards are said to be clubbed. This is typically a sign of low levels of oxygen in the blood. It could also be symptom of lung disease, liver and kidney disorders, AIDS and inflammatory bowel disease. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Homeopathic.

There are two different kinds of baldness. Reversible and irreversible. Reversible baldness in which hair follicles are alive and regrowth is possible such as in alopecia areata, diffuse hair loss. Irreversible baldness where hair roots are dead and regrowth is not possible eg--male pattern thinning, scarring alopecia. Local application which you are using is local dht blocker and is advised in patients of male pattern thinning. Here the cause is male hormone and genetically fronto vertex area is sensitive for its effect. This dht destroys the hair and hair starts thinning and scalp start showing up. It is progressive by nature. It is impotant to check condition of hair follicle and even stage of thinning. Which ever is the stage, treatment is available consult trichologist as early as possible.

We are not using ginger juice and castor oil in Allopathy, so comments on its use is not appropriate. Aurveda doctors may reply. You can use Minoxidil lotion on the scalp. PRP therapy is also seen helpful in some cases.

Problems with beard may be genetical. Do not panic. Every coin has two sides, not having thick beard is also beneficial. But if you r so desperate for beard than consult hair transplant surgeon he can help. Local application of minoxidil may help but it has side affects like it reduces blood pressuren all. I'll suggest you do not take tension be happy do yoga n pranayam daily eat healthy food.

Dark spots are primarily caused by zits, acne, blemishes and black heads. The percentage of dark spots can increase with increased exposure to the sun. So, apply sunscreen, every time you go out and follow the home remedies below in order to get relief from dark spots. Take a medium sized tomato and squeeze the juice from it, add one tablespoon of lemon juice to the tomato juice and stir the mixture well. Apply on the face and let it dry for 20 minutes. Rinse the face with warm water. Collect the pulp from Aloe Vera leaves and let it dry in the sun for 5 minutes and then add few drops of lemon juice to the dried pulp. Apply this mixture on the face and wash it off after 15 minutes. The results are quite good. take a pinch of turmeric powder and add some lemon juice to it. Mix both the ingredients well and dab the mixture on the black spots. This pack can work very effectively to reduce marks on the skin and the results will be visible on the skin within a week’s time if you use this treatment daily.

I am losing hair quickly and have tried all shampoo but no effect. Please help me.
Shampoo should be diluted in water to make it mild. Direct use affects sensetive hair. Avoid using different different shampoos. Use arnica hair oil (sbl) regularly, or you may apply a day before washing head. Use for 3 months. If still problem persists after a month consult for internal medication. Excessive masturbtion causes hairfall.

I have suffering from acne. It looks very dirty. Those pimples are big in size than others. Please help me.
Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. Acne usually appears on your face, neck, chest, back and shoulders. Acne is of various types: Whiteheads (closed plugged pores) Blackheads (open plugged pores — the oil turns brown when it is exposed to air) Small red, tender bumps (papules) Pimples (pustules), which are papules with pus at their tips. You can control mild acne with basic skin care: 1) Use a good facewash like clean and clear or Himalya neem. 2) Use antidandruff shampoo if acne are localized on your forehead. 3) Do not pick at your acne or they might leave scars. 4) Keep your hair cut short so that they do not fall on your forehead. 5) Drink 8-10 glasses water daily. 6) Destress yourself as stress is a known trigger for acne. If above does not help, you may revert back for homoepathic acne treatment.

When you choose a sunscreen, look for SPF of 30 and above(protects from UV B rays), UV A protection and also make sure it is water resistant. Only then it will protect and stay on for half a day at least. Most sunscreens are oily. Very few are matte finish. So there is nothing in wrong in applying powder over sunscreen
