My mother 85 years. Has knee problems for the last 20 years, but now cannot stand up without help for the last 3-4 months. Should we go for knee replacement at this age. Kindly suggest.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Actually knee replacement is a procedure designed to make patient ambulate and live a healthy life. Although your mother is 85 yrs old, decision for surgery depends upon her activity levels, as in is she active in her life, does she used to walk 3-4 months back, what are her other co morbid conditions etc? if she is a healthy 85 yrs female, then she can certainly benefit from surgical procedure but will require proper detailed evaluation for it. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

Dear since you on bed/rest for 15 days, your muscles must have become quite weak and hence is this pain. Do hot fomentation and apply a pain killer gel and support your knee joints with 6" crepe bandages 2 for each knee. Applied from above the ankles to the base of thighs. No squatting on floor, use a commode and avoid stairs. Take a pain killer like ultracet sos for few days. Once your pain settles, start a short morning walk and increase it gradually. If of no avail. Consult an ortho. Surgeon around u.

Dear user with the information provided it appears that you are suffering from viral upper respiratory infection. It is advisable if you can start doing gargles with luke warm water on a regular basis at least twice daily till your problem resolves. For the relief of your pain you can take tab paracetamol 500 mg twice or thrice daily. Hope this solves your query.

Most of times cold is viral and doesn' t require any specific medication. Usually it disappears in 5. 7 days but times it persists for longtime. If you have already taken antibiotic course then do not take any medicine and try some home made remedies.

The treatment of Diabetes is not that simple. There are many classes of Diabetic Drugs. It depends on extent of Diabetes and complications to decide medicine for the Diabetic person. Dosages are also decided upon depending on your acute and chronic sugar levels, fasting sugar levels, post prandial sugar levels, urine sugar levels, urine MICROALBUMIN levels, urea and creatinine levels. So, a complete Diabetic profile needs to be done to reach for the best drugs and proper dosages. If Diabetes is not controlled with in few years it cause multiple complications like Eye Vision Problem, Nerves Damage, Sexual Weakness, Heart Diseases, Kidney Disease, foot Complications and reduced blood supply to the brain. Here is the list of Tests, please get them done and follow up with me. I will do the best and give you a proper treatment. 1. HBA1C. 2. SUGAR - Fasting and PP. 3. Urine - Routine and MICROSCOPY. 4. Urine MICROALBUMIN. 5. Urea and Creatinine. 6. Lipid Profile. Follow up with the reports. I will set up a wonderful treatment plan to control your sugar levels. Additionally I will also make a customised Dietary plan for you to take care of your Sugar levels naturally.

Quad Clenches: Lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. Now, tighten the muscle on the front of the thigh by pushing your knee down. You should feel your thigh muscles clench, Hold for 3 secs. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Short Arcs: Lie flat on your back or sit upright with your leg placed horizontally on a flat surface like a chair or bed. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. Pull your toes towards you and clench you thigh muscles. Slowly lift your foot up off the bed until your knee is straight (keep your knee resting on the towel). Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower them on the chair. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Straight Leg Raise: Lie flat on your back. One leg and knee will be straight and other leg should be bent. Pull your toes towards you and tighten/clench the muscle on the front of the thigh, locking your knee straight. Lift your foot up in the air, about 6 inches off the bed. Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower the leg. The knee must remain straight the whole time you are doing this exercise.
