Chronic Gas Problem - Facts You Should Know About it

MBBS
General Physician, Chandigarh
Chronic Gas Problem - Facts You Should Know About it

Almost all of us have experienced bloating, gas or an upset stomach. Yet some people experience this problem at a chronic level. Gas occurs in the stomach and intestines due to breakdown of food into energy. All of us pass gas, however some people do more than others. An average person passes gas 5-20 times a day.

An upset stomach can often cause problems and can be a difficult battle for many people. Although the symptoms of gas problems often relate to an improper diet, yet other factors may be also responsible.

Causes and Symptoms of Gas Problems

  1. Swallowing air: The swallowed air which is not burped out, passes through the digestive system and is released through the opening of the anus. Hiccups can also occur if you have swallowed excessive air.
  2. Diet: The reaction of different foods varies from one person to another. Also foods that lead to odorous gas may also vary from person to person. Yet, spicy foods and dairy products are the most common causes of gas. Example - Beans, cabbage, onions, radishes, eggs, carbonated drinks, sugar, packaged foods etc.
  3. Medications: Certain medicines and supplements, including prescription drugs, can lead to gas problems and bloating. Further, medications which change the hormonal balance in the body can also cause bloating.
  4. Medical problems: Certain medical conditions such as Irritable bowel syndrome or bowel obstruction can also lead to an upset stomach.

Common symptoms of gas problems include gas pain, cramping, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. In the worst of cases, gas and bloating indicate colon cancer. Such people experience rapid weight loss, anaemia and blood in stools.

Treatment
Modifying your lifestyle, in particular your dietary practices, is essential to a healthy recovery.

  • Avoiding foods such as spaghetti, oats, bran, barley, banana, bread etc. which contain high fibre content is important.
  • You can opt for over the counter medications after consulting your physician. Homeopathy and Ayurveda can be also opted as alternative forms of treatment.

I have a problem of bedwetting. I am suffering from my childhood so please help me to cure this problem as it is not good for me.

MBBS MD DCH, Dch
Pediatrician, Muzaffarpur
I have a problem of bedwetting. I am suffering from my childhood so please help me to cure this problem as it is not ...
Well bedwetting also known as nocturnal enuresis is not uncommon in childhood due to immaturity of full urinary bladder which fails to send signal to brain to awaken the child. Most cases have genetic predisposition (familial tendency). Invariably the condition remits once the child grows up. It is uncommon to persist in adolescent age group. What to do then? it is first desirable to rule out any structural or functional anamoly of urinary tract. Once ruled out then following measures help a lot. 1 toilet training: to hold urine during day time to strengthen/enhance bladder capacity 2 to void urine 2 hours prior to sleep 3 no water/liquid intake within 2 hours of sleep. 4 role of drugs like imipramine is limited. There is relapse once medicine is stopped 5 wet bed alarm bell has been found to be very effective as with single drop of urine passed during sleep shall alarm the bell and person shall go the toilet for completion voiding 6 I have found with mentat syrup very encouraging results. 7 the family support is required! 8 there is nothing to be disappointed. You shall overcome this problem slowly but surely

There are no such medications I am afraid. However you can try reglan tablet 10mg thrice daily for 5 days and see if this helps. This is an antiemetic and is not used for this purpose ; though a few of my patients have benefitted.

Homeopathy for Babies and Children

Homeopathy for Babies and Children

HOMOEOPATHY FOR BABIES AND CHILDREN

Homoeopathy is ideal for babies and children as it is a gentle yet highly effective system of medicine. Homeopathic remedies taste good and children like them the highly diluted natural substances that from homeopathic remedies mean that they are safe to use in the very young, including newborn babies.

More than that, homoeopathy can raise the immunity of your children to help deal with illness throughout their childhood. Homeopathy not only helps when your child is ill. It can also help prevent illness and give support through difficult periods of their life. Homeopathy works fast with children because they are usually full of vitality. Acute conditions such as ear infections, tonsillitis and flu, can be resolved rapidly using the right remedies, often avoiding the need for conventional medicines. Babies also tend to respond quickly to homeopathic treatment. On a more serious note, there are children with serious behavior problems! Yes, homeopathy works for these too!

Kids today face more responsibility, uncertainty, pressure, and other ”grown-up” issues than any generation in the past. If your child or teenager is experiencing stress, the primary goal is to resolve the source of anxiety. Unfortunately, this isn’t always possible—at least immediately. In some cases, it may not even be in the best interest of the child. Since stress has gotten such a bad rap, sometimes it’s easy to forget that, some stress is positive—it challenges us to grow. An example of positive stress is the challenge of participating in sports or learning a musical instrument.

Homeopathic alternatives treat the whole child. Today there are many pediatricians preffering homoeopathic treatment for their children and patients in various pediatric conditions.

Reasons why homoeopathy should be adopted for children:-

  1. Safe medicine: homoeopathic medicines are free from harmfull effects and 100% non toxic.
  2. Homoeopathy: effective and quick treatment-children being more sensitive, respond quicker to homoeopathy.
  3. Homoeopathy: scientific and Natural medicine- Homoeopathy can be scientifically checked and positive .

Pain, redness and swelling at the site of injection alongwith fever and irritability are common after dpt vaccination. They last for 2-3 days. Cold fomentation and syp/tab paracetamol will be sufficient.

After c section I have no breastfeeding first 8 days after that I have very low supply what is my problem.

Pediatrician, Kaithal
Late starting of breastfeeding is the main cause, as baby sucking is best stimulation for better breast milk output. Continue to feed. Also check your medicines, you are taking. If there is Pyridoxine in any drug, please stop it as it also decreases milk output.

My 6 month old son is having dry scalp with itching and white flakes too. Redness of scalp. Please suggest a medication.
Hi, thanks for contacting me. Your son is possibly suffering from eczema/ dandruff of the scalp. Treatment would involve keeping the scalp'moist' use a good quality oil to massage the roots and then wash it off after 10 minutes with a baby'no-tears' shampoo. If the problem persists, talk to me on private chat or consult your pediatrician. Warm regards

What kind of food diet can I fallow to my 2years child. Her hands are shaking when she try to hold things. Is non veg...
It is better you get your child examined by a Pediatrician once to make sure there is no problem. At this age your child can eat what other members of the family eat. It is up to you to decide whether to give non veg or pure veg. In general vegetarian diet is more suitable for the human body.

My one month baby crying continuously for hungry and also crying after going urine.what to do

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH)

My one month baby crying continuously for hungry and also crying after going urine.what to do
Always feed the baby in comfortable sitting position, awake baby properly while feeding. Feed the baby at least for 15_20 minutes, each time empty one breast, and give from other if needed, properly burp the baby after each feed. Keep at least 2 hours in between 2 feeds. So baby gets satisfied and won't cry, and no chance of getting colicky pain also. All baby's cry little while passing urine and passing sometimes stool. Don't worry.

Why Your Baby is Missing Sound Sleep?

MBBS, MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Varanasi
Why Your Baby is Missing Sound Sleep?

When you hold your new born in your arms for the first time, you will count him or her as the greatest blessing of your life. This is also the time when you are burdened with the responsibilities of another human. The sleep patterns in new-borns are erratic and you will never see them follow any pattern as such. They sleep off just about any time of the day and you will not see any pattern until about your angel is about 6 to 7 weeks old. After that age, they get quite adaptable and you will be able to get him or her adapted to certain patterns. This will make things very easy for you and your partner.

So why won’t your baby sleep?

1. Your baby is too excited to fall asleep

Babies are a powerhouse of energy. Activities like tossing him in the air or giving him an exciting bath full of fun and frolic will probably do the opposite of winding him down. It will make him more excited and he will not want to go to bed thinking he would miss out on the other fun activities that are in store for him.

Solution: Replace the fun tickles with other activities like comforting massages or story time and lullabies. Dim the lights, cosy up the room. Make it a routine and you will find your baby easing into a deep slumber in no time.

2. Your baby is too sensitive to the external or internal environment

Every baby is not a sound sleeper. Some babies may jolt awake with just a simple nod, others may dose off amidst noise and screams as well. If your baby is of the first kind, then you may face a bunch of troubles to keep your baby calm and cosy. You may bother your baby’s sleep if your phone starts to ring around her or by the constant honking of cars outside.

Solution: Keep her surroundings as warm and comfortable as possible. Keep her in a room that is away from the bustling noise of the cars, if possible or sound proof her room. Start by dimming the lights and getting her comfortable clothes that will keep her free when she is sleeping. Keep her sheets and pillows clean and ensure they do not remain wet.

3. Your baby snacks in the middle of the night

As it was mentioned before, babies have erratic schedules. They can get hungry or cranky just about any time of the day. Mid-night snacking is probably numero uno reason as to why your baby will not fall asleep at night. If you feed your baby to sleep every time, he or she might associate it with nursing.

Solution: It is okay to train your baby to comfort itself in the middle of the night. Whenever it may think it is hungry, he or she will cry and expect you to nurse him to sleep. Put him in the nursery when he is relatively sleepy to allow him to fall asleep all by himself. You may stand by till he does, but do not swaddle him. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Pediatrician.

ADHD is not fun for the child!

ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a condition characterized by an inability to concentrate and sustain attention. It is a biological problem of the brain.

Due to poor concentration the child feels bored easily and may become impulsive and appear to be mischievous

He may answer out of turn and will talk even when not spoken to.

He may have difficulty sitting at one place.

He maybe restless, fidgety and jumping about.

This will hamper his ability to remember things and may become forgetful and lose things.

This is something the child does not do on purpose and feels guilty and unhappy about, making the child feel low on self-esteem which may manifest as aggressive and rebellious behavior.

Tips for the teacher and parents

1. Keep the child close to her in the classroom

2. Keep the child away from the windows

3. Shower praise when he behaves appropriately.

4. Write important information down where the child can easily read and reference it

5.Divide big assignments into smaller ones, and allow children frequent breaks.

6. Incorporate Physical movement into classroom teaching.

7. Working with interruptions:

Reducing the interruptions of children with ADD/ADHD should be done carefully so that the child’s self-esteem is maintained, especially in front of others. Develop a “secret language” with the child with ADD/ADHD. You can use discreet gestures or words you have previously agreed upon to let the child know they are interrupting. Praise the child for interruption-free conversations.

8. Dealing with Impulsivity:

Give consequences immediately following misbehavior. Be specific in your explanation, making sure the child knows how they misbehaved.

Recognize good behavior out loud. Be specific in your praise, making sure the child knows what they did right.

Write the schedule for the day on the board or on a piece of paper and cross off each item as it is completed. Children with impulse problems may gain a sense of control and feel calmer when they know what to expect.

9. Dealing with Hyperactivity:

Ask children with ADD/ADHD to run an errand or do a task for you, even if it just means walking across the room to sharpen pencils or put books away.

Encourage the child to play a sport—or at least run around before and after school.

Provide a stress ball, small toy, or other object for the child to squeeze or play with discreetly at his or her seat.

Limit screen time in favor of time for movement. Your child will enjoy fast games like Subway Surfer and Temple Run.

Make sure a child with ADD/ADHD never misses recess or PT period.

Hello, Keep baby covered and avoid taking her out in the evening. You can keep camphor near your window, as it will present mosquitoes entry.
